This article aims to investigate how Mikołaj of Błonie, a Polish preacher from the first half of the fifteenth century, employs the motif of the ages of the world and man in the first sermon on Dominica Septuagesimae from his collection de tempore. In order to determine its function in respect to the medieval text and its role in religious instruction, this study identifies the sources of this theme and how it was adapted by the preacher according to the requirements of the sermon genre. A comprehensive analysis of Mikołaj of Błonie’s sermon demonstrates that the preacher employs the topos of the ages of the world and man as a persuasive literary device carrying a powerful, charismatic exhortation, in line with the didactic and moralizing nature of the sermon as a rhetorical genre. I will argue that the preacher exerted meticulous care in selecting and adapting source materials to make it relevant and appealing to his audience.

Rereading the first dated work of Ukrainian literature during the Russian-Ukrainian war is especially valuable because it proves our strength. This research is relevant as drawing attention to ways of addressing significant social needs a thousand years ago allows us to identify parallels with modern public speech and rhetorical practices in the political sphere. The main scientific problem that the author tries to highlight in this article concerns the correlation of rhetoric (the art of public speaking) and poetics (the system of creative principles of the author or era) in the study of the Sermon on Law and Grace, most likely created by Ilarion, Metropolitan of Kyiv. The article aims to outline the sources we should use to learn the poetics and rhetoric of the Sermon as a medieval work. The rhetoric and the poetic of the Sermon grow out of the Judeo-Christian tradition (unthinkable without ancient influences), then enriched by Byzantine oratory, but most closely related to evangelical preaching and the liturgical tradition of Kyivan Rus.

Ponowne odczytanie pierwszego datowanego dzieła literatury ukraińskiej w czasie wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej jest szczególnie cenne, albowiem dowodzi naszej siły. Zwrócenie uwagi na sposoby zaspokajania istotnych potrzeb społecznych sprzed tysiąca lat pozwala na odnalezienie paraleli z nowoczesnymi wypowiedziami publicznymi i praktykami retorycznymi w sferze polityki, co sprawia, że badanie takie ma istotne znaczenie. Główny problem naukowy uwypuklony w niniejszym artykule dotyczy korelacji retoryki (sztuka wystąpień publicznych) i poetyki (system zasad twórczych autora lub epoki) w analizie Słowa o prawie i łasce, za autora którego uważany jest metropolita kijowski Iłarion. Celem studium jest zatem wskazanie źródeł, do których należy sięgać w celu zgłębienia poetyki i retoryki Słowa jako dzieła średniowiecznego. Retoryczne i poetyckie komponenty Słowa pochodzą z tradycji judeochrześcijańskiej, z ich wpływami antycznymi, wzbogacone oratorium bizantyjskim, najściślej związane z kaznodziejstwem ewangelicznym i kijowsko-ruską tradycją liturgiczną.
