TEACHING ADULTS TO READ: INTRODUCING THE TONIC SOL-FA METHOD

The nature of adults and their peculiar learning difficulties make helping adults to learn to read a delicate task. Developing a method for helping adults to read, becomes also necessary. This report, introduces a method for helping adults learn through musical 8 tonic sol-fa sound tones. Indicative of high potential for leading adults to learn reading faster, the teaching method was mindful of learners’ low esteems and experiential connections to adult’s daily living. A step by step module and action–response-outcome (input output) analysis was carried out with successful outcome. This method was tried on 11 adults who not only demonstrated reading skills within few weeks, shown great enthusiasm in learning more literacy skills. The innovation applied adult teaching principles and the phonics words analysis approach. Although first tested on adults the method has high potential to help children learn reading skills even faster.

Natura ludzi dorosłych i ich szczególne trudności w nauce powodują, że pomoc dorosłym w nauce czytania jest delikatnym zadaniem. Dlatego koniecznością staje się praca nad metodą ułatwiającą dorosłym to zadanie. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje metodę umożliwiającą uczenie się dorosłych czytania poprzez ośmiotonową metodę dźwięków. Metoda ta ma duży potencjał w przyśpieszeniu procesu uczenia się czytania wśród dorosłych i bierze pod uwagę fakt, iż czytanie nie jest powiązane z codziennym życiem uczących się oraz że dodatkową przeszkodą w nauce może być ich niskie poczucie własnej wartości. Analiza prowadzona na poszczególnych etapach wykazała jej skuteczność. Metoda została zastosowana wobec jedenastu osób, które w ciągu kilku tygodni osiągnęły umiejętność czytania oraz wykazały duże zainteresowanie dalszą nauką. Mimo że metoda była testowana na dorosłych, wykazuje duży potencjał w nauczaniu czytania dzieci.
