Work has changed during the last decades and now it is based on knowledge and information. The article aims at analysing the definition and characteristics of a new group of employees - knowledge workers encountered in the literature. The first part presents the definitions used in the literature, compares their mutual congruity and analyses various criteria applied to define knowledge workers: their characteristics, participation in knowledge processes and education. The second part is an attempt to explain what is the main reason that category of knowledge workers have appeared. The last part of article presents the challenges of management knowledge workers.

Artykuł prezentuje klasyfikację różnorodnych metod zarządzania, stosowanych we współczesnych przedsiębiorstwach. Dodatkowo skupia się on na metodach, które są najczęściej wykorzystywane przez organizacje oraz poddawane badaniom empirycznym przez naukowców. Jego głównym celem jest uświadomienie przedsiębiorcom możliwości, jakie daje wykorzystywanie poszczególnych metod. Jednocześnie zaznaczając, że poprawa wyników jest związana z odpowiednim dostosowaniem tychże metod do specyfiki funkcjonowania organizacji.

The article presents classification of varied methods of management, applied in contemporary enterprises. Additionally, it concentrates on methods which are most often used for organizations and it proposes empirical research carried out by scientists. The primary aim of this article is to help the entrepreneurs to realize the possibilities of using the individual methods. Simultaneously, it stresses the fact that improvement in performance of organizations depends on suitable applications of these methods.
