The fairy tales with their literary form, given by Charles Perrault in 17th century, have become with the passing of time a part of collective patrimony. No wonder many writers have been making use of this source in order to create their versions of Perrault’s stories. The most interesting fairy tales seem to be those which rewrite Bluebeard. One of them is Amélie Nothomb’s novel, published in 2012 and supporting the same title, in which readers can find a realisation of the phenomenon called by G. Genette a “pragmatic transposition” (“transposition pragmatique”).

Seeking the key to the heterogeneous style of Michael Winterbottom, Kruk grounds his argument on the analysis of Winterbottom’s film adaptations of English literature classics: Thomas Hardy and Laurence Sterne. The way Winterbottom moves between these two literary traditions reflects his changing attitude to realism. The realistic convention – both in costume dramas based on Hardy, and in films dealing with the „here and now”, reveals the processes ruling the world and permits one to take a stance in regards to political plans for its improvement. Whereas postmodern exposure of the cracks in the joints in realistic performances in films inspired by narrative techniques employed by Laurence Sterne (24 Hour party people, Tristram shandy) signals the shift on Winterbottom’s work towards comedy and sur-fiction.

The aim of this essay is to discuss selected novels of Wanda Karczewska. The analysis includes only specific aspects of Karczewska’s writing, such as narrative techniques, and its major aim is to situate her literary works in the context of the New Novel, a French literary movement which had a significant influence on the development of modern prose, including the postmodern novel. The second, equally important, aim of this text is to present some of the virtues of Karczewska’s forgotten novels to a wider audience.
