The author of the text analyzes how to make selections and create journalistic materials that address the problem of aggression in sport. It draws attention to the attractiveness, but also the dangers of publishing such articles. He wonders about the etiology of the problem, who generates greater demand for aggression: media recipients, broadcasters - journalists, and maybe the heroes themselves - athletes?

The PiS party, which has been in power in Poland since October 2015, has completely subjugated the public television TVP. Every day, it runs the state propaganda, whose symbol has become the headlines in the main Polish news called Wiadomości (The News). Germany, along with the opposition and the EU, is most often attacked in them. Headlines such as “Germany does not want a strong Poland”, “Brussels, Berlin and the opposition are against Poland”, “The opposition and Germany want to punish Poland” are not uncommon and are jokingly called paski grozy (horror headlines) by internet users. The aim of this article is to examine selected headlines in relation to the linguistic persuasion strategies that serve to reinforce the negative image of Germany in Poland on the one hand, and lead to the heating up of anti-German emotions on the other. A headline is understood here as a short sentence or sentence ellipsis that has a visual character and fulfils an introductory function for the right journalistic material. The character and communication pragmatic role of such headlines coincide with those known from the press. The corpus comprises 34 headlines coming from the period of 2016–2019 and was divided into four domains with regard to the topics touched upon in them: Politics, History, Society or Economy. In the analysis, elements related to the linguistic expression of reality assessment were taken into account. Four groups of these elements were distinguished: words and expressions independent of the author, interrogative sentences, evaluative elements at the system and sentence level, and evaluative elements referring to the external linguistic context. The analysis shows that with the help of the evaluation elements at the system and sentence level, connotations and implicatures, Germany and Germans were presented in a clearly unfavourable light. In eight headlines, negative information was implied, five headlines contained negative connotations, and in six headlines other negatively charged evaluation elements were added to neutral terms. Finally, in seven headlines, lexemes occur that have exclusively a hostility-increasing role. Only 3 headlines were classified as neutral.

The text is focused on the characteristics of news in daily TV programmes, such as the news or broadcasts on round-the-clock television (e.g. TVN 24). The author proposes a definition of news and tries to approach its intrinsic features in Polish conditions, illustrating the discussion with examples. A full description of news (considering such problems as content and the most important characteristics) makes it possible to systematize an event and analyse news in the Polish mass media.

The paper discusses the news on Polish TV channels. The author argues that the process of selection of information and their aesthetics are governed by laws similar to those that govern every other commodity on the trade market. Together with information, a viewer is sold a full package of ideas, a certain attitude to the world, whose essence is consumerism. An important part of the text provides a detailed analysis of one edition of the evening news station TVN24, which supplied arguments in favour of the thesis presented.

The author analyses the role of the radio news bulletin, based on the example of “Fakty” on the RMF FM radio station. In this, he uses the theory of persuasive techniques researched by M. Gajlewicz; however, he also takes into account linguistic aspects of the communication and modern rhetoric understood as effective persuading. The purpose of the article is to prove that radio news on a commercial radio station is not actually just “pure” information; a neutral informative style is consequently displaced by the rhetorical style, full of intentionally used linguistic mechanisms, to make the information more persuasive.

On every TV channel news are showed in different way, even if they are simply the same. Depending on the channel, informations are given to a recipient in neutral way or underline their opinion. The Polsat News showed the news without its point of view, but The TVN stations did it from the citizens approval. Opposite side of an opinion had the TVP channel. TV TRWAM focused its attention on the anniversary of the introduction of martial law. Every TV Station uses different methods of presenting informations.

The analysis of the process of creating, delivering and receiving the contents of news functioning in media requires taking into consideration a broad cultural context defined by the contemporary discourse of information (news discourse). This means space to create meanings, shared by the sender and recipient, which determines the understanding and interpretation of the events featured in the news services. In addition, tabloidization process leads to changes in communication conventions in the contemporary media. As these media are becoming an integral part of the socialization process, an analysis of the process of “permeating” of a media messages into the structure of social practices is, in the author’s opinion, extremely important.

The objective of this paper is to determine the scale of influence of the media (both traditional and social) on party preferences. The complicated contemporary media ecosystem, in which the boundaries between traditional and internet media are blurred (internet versions of newspapers), news coverage is increasingly de-professionalized (emergence of civic journalism), verification of information becomes increasingly problematic (fake news) leads to a number of theoretical and methodological challenges. Theoretically, the paper uses the model in which mass media act as a factor triggering the emergence of latent views. Empirically, the effort is undertaken to cover the whole universe of information sources, including both print and electronic media, both traditional and internet sources. The analysis determines citizens’ sources of information, tracks consistencies in selecting particular categories of sources (thus outlining ‘information bubbles’), correlates sources with party preferences and measures generalized attitudes to media categories. The study is undertaken on a sample representative for adult Polish population, fielded with CAWI methodology.

The Internet gave to different media unlimited possibilities of transmission of information. It responds quickly to any contemporary changes, offers a space for open discussion and facilitates exchange of ideas or opinions. The image of a world provided by electronic newspapers has an unparalleled dynamic, and its language is one of the most significant factors. In this context the sport, as one of the key issues in Portuguese media discourse serves as a basis for a linguistic analysis with various interpretations.

News as a Rhetorical Act

This article presents television news as a rhetorical act. Television news is understood as an account of an event usually comprising of a short introduction and a few minutes of film footage (sometimes referred to as the editorial), created as a result of the work of reporters, broadcast on television, usually as one of the elements in the structure of a news magazine, but also as an element of the programme blocks of news television channels. Television news functions in the media as one of the elements of the strategic actions of media broadcasters, focused on specific purposes, including image-building and political and economic goals. News is created as a response to specific events, it fulfils the need for information, but also serves the creation of a certain image of the world, focusing attention on certain aspects of reality, evaluating it, persuading viewers of the importance or unimportance of certain events. It plays an informative, creative, conceptual, stimulating, evaluative and ultimately aesthetic role. In order to achieve these objectives it is appropriately constructed, taking into account the characteristics and needs of the recipient and the ethos of the broadcaster. In this sense, it is therefore a “rhetorical” act – intentional, deliberate, constituting a response to a specific situation (it is historically, socially and politically conditioned) and addressed to specific recipients.

News podcasts are an emerging media phenomenon in Czechia, and yet there has never been a proper analysis of the fundamental incentives for producing them. This study identifies three principal factors that motivate established media houses to create news podcasts alongside other traditional forms of delivering the news: focus on a younger audience, content presentation and the building of trust. Each motive is analysed independently and thoroughly. The study also reveals the background of media marketing strategies concerning podcasts and examines the mechanisms of adapting foreign trends in podcasting to the Czech context. The study focuses on six different Czech news podcasts (including news-politics and news-talk formats) and is based on twelve in-depth interviews with the hosts and their Editors-in-Chief. This work aims to broaden the knowledge of podcasting in Czechia and to help understand how this surging media platform can be generally used to share news stories and information about current affairs.

Despite being an underreported topic in the news media, gender-based violence (GBV) undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims. Research has studied many of the factors that generate or maintain this kind of violence. However, the influence of the media is still uncertain. This paper used Big Data techniques to explore how GBV is depicted and reported in digital news media. By feeding neural networks with news, the topic information associated with each article can be recovered. Our findings show a relationship between GBV news and public awareness, the effect of well-known GBV cases, and the intrinsic thematic relationship of GBV news with justice themes.

The primary function of the Internet memes is to deliver current information together with comments in the most attractive form, usually serving the broadly defined entertainment. Indirectly they function as news – on the one hand they inform the recipient of some event or phenomenon, on the other hand they enrich the message with additional content. The examples of memes are visual resources of Facebook fanpage – Artificial Violets, whose authors use known paintings in their posts, adding to them speech bubbles, which generally relate to current socio-political or cultural and social events. Memes of this kind are to capture reality as accurately as possible using possibly a small number of devices, presenting a grotesque view of the reality, or exaggerating some features. They are the voice of the Internet community, but also a tool for communication and exchange of views, since many of them permeate everyday life from the virtual world.

This study takes a broader look at the news broadcasts of private broadcasters in the Slovak environment. News is an attractive part of any radio station, which, depending on its territorial coverage and focus, adapts the content of information in individual news blocks. The text focuses on the two most listened-to private radio stations in Slovakia, namely Rádio Expres and Fun Rádio, which operate as the two ‘flagships’ of the two largest media houses in Slovakia. The ambition is to identify and define the current trends in commercial radio broadcasting, which are ascertained through the analysis of news blocks at selected specific times, especially in prime-time in November 2021. In total, there were more than 160 news blocks. In the different parts of the research, we focused on the number of news blocks broadcast, the frequency of news that repeats, the genre of the news broadcast, but also on the news presenter’s involvement in the stream of broadcasting, and thus activity outside of their main broadcasting job or position. On the basis of the data obtained, we identify current trends in radio news coverage of commercial broadcasters in Slovakia.

The continual growth in the importance of commercial media, as proven by its growing share of the audience market, invites us to scrutinize the ways politics is mediated through these chan- nels. One may assume that the very essence of commercial activity influences the ways and forms of conducting political discourse by these media, and as a result influences the picture of politics. The aim of the article is to point out the shift away from traditional forms of political debates as well as the change in formula of covering political phenomena and events, and political processes by the media, and the specifics of the convergence of television genres, in which politics is present. The article will attempt a reconstruction of medial political reality, based on content analysis and the analysis of the forms of political discourse in commercial television, particularly in news programs using “Fakty”, broadcasted by TVN, as a case study.
