The article deals with selected issues forming a part of theoretical reflection on proper names. It refers to the manner of study and description of proper names as well as to the adopted methodological assumptions. The author discusses the subject of the essence of proper names, various concepts connected with their definition and with demarcating the boundaries of onomastics as a scholarly discipline. Also, the problem of meaning of proper names and various conventions of describing this meaning have been discussed.
