The aim of this article is to draw attention to the problem of the status of ethics in relation to issues concerning the process of shaping moral identity in a modern human being. The starting point for those considerations was the analysis of the consequences resulting from various cultural processes which are visible in, for example, laicisation of the Polish society. Taking into account mainly the pedagogical context, the thesis which was subjected to analysis concerns the lack of raison d’être of traditionally funded ethics. Therefore, the paper refers to the possibility of establishing ethics on a basis different than religion. It is very necessary to attempt to achieve this target due to such reasons as the society’s laicisation expressed through loss of faith. Confessional morality is endangered by moral and existential nihilism and that is where an independent ethics created by Tadeusz Kotarbinski comes in, which includes ethics trying to find justification of actions at an anthropological and historical level. In a situation when the young generation influenced by various cultural factors refers to religion as the basis for their moral choices less and less frequently, this kind of ethics can prove to be very useful in the process of raising children and teenagers.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na problematykę statusu etyczności w odniesieniu do zagadnień związanych z kształtowaniem tożsamości moralnej współczesnego człowieka. Punktem wyjścia do tego typu rozważań jest analiza skutków, jakie niosą ze sobą różnorodne procesy kulturowe, co przejawia się między innymi poprzez laicyzację polskiego społeczeństwa. Biorąc pod uwagę przede wszystkim kontekst pedagogiczny, teza, która zostaje poddana analizie, dotyczy utraty racji bytu tradycyjnie ufundowanej etyki. Tak więc tekst odnosi się do możliwości ufundowania etyki na podstawach innych niż religijne. Dążenie do tego jest potrzebne z wielu względów, takich jak laicyzacja przejawiająca się utratą wiary. Konfesyjnie ufundowana moralność zagrożona jest wówczas nihilizmem moralnym czy egzystencjalnym. I tutaj pojawia się etyka niezależna autorstwa Tadeusza Kotarbińskiego, niepomijająca w swej treści wątków etyki poszukującej uzasadnienia na płaszczyźnie antropologiczno-historycznej. W sytuacji, gdy pod wpływem różnych czynników kulturowych młode pokolenie coraz rzadziej odwołuje się do religii jako podstawy swoich wyborów moralnych, tego typu etyka może okazać się niezwykle pomocna w procesie wychowania dzieci i młodzieży.
