This article presents the findings of the ‘European Employee Engagement Survey’, which is a bi-annual research that was executed in 2010 and 2012 with the participation of almost 300 European Human Resource (HR) professionals. The main objective of the research was to explore a comprehensive picture concerning the state of employee engagement within the European region with special attention to the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. By introducing descriptive statistics of survey responses the paper provides an interesting overview about various approaches to employee engagement as well as the variety of HR and engagement management practices applied in the CEE and European region. Furthermore, through multi-variable statistical analyses it also reveals deeper coherences of HR and engagement practices with demographic data as well as certain employee aspects, such as employee morale, engagement and organizations’ talent attraction and retention ability. The research confirmed that employee engagement had become a widely recognized concept among European HR professionals. Growing importance was attributed to employee engagement across European organizations with the intention to more deliberately manage employee engagement and link engagement measures to business results. Interestingly, however, the research findings did not fully support the generally agreed notion that improved HR and engagement practices would remarkably contribute to the improvement of employee aspects.

Introduction and aim. The prevalence of hypertension is increasing with accompanying poor control. The aim of this study was to assess the predictors of knowledge and practices of adult hypertensives. Material and method. The study was a prospective (before and after) study with health education as the intervention. A simple random sampling technique with computer-generated random numbers was used to recruit 386 patients. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23. Logistic regressions were used to determine the predictors of knowledge and practices. Results. Those who had tertiary education were about four times more likely to have good knowledge of hypertension than those who had secondary education (OR=0.256; 95% CI=0.106–0.617). The females were about 1.73 times more likely to have good practices of hypertension than males (OR=1.729; 95% CI=1.008–2.966). For every 1 unit increase in the body mass index, there was a statistically significant increase in diastolic blood pressure by about 0.22 units (95% CI=0.046–0.394, p=0.013). The health education had a positive impact on the blood pressure reduction. Conclusion. The predictors of knowledge of hypertension, practices of hypertensives and diastolic blood pressure were level of education, sex, and body mass index respectively.

This study investigates the practices of public (high) school, private language institute, and public-private teachers. In particular, it aims at addressing the role of contextual factors, the variations teachers introduce to cope with them, and the degree of sustainable behaviour among these three groups of teachers. High school teachers consisted of those who taught only in high schools and the ones teaching both in high schools and private language institutes. For this purpose, classroom practices of 60 EFL teachers (N=20 per group) with 3 to 6 years of teaching experience and BA degree in TEF) were compared in terms of group/pair work, teacher talking time, L1 use, questioning, corrective feedback, and coverage of language skills. The findings of the study indicate that a significant difference exists among these three groups of teachers in terms of their practices. It is noteworthy that in the same teaching context of high school, the practices of teachers with and without private language teaching experience are significantly dissimilar except in the duration of pair/group work activities and the rates of repetition and explicit correction. This study suggests that high school EFL teachers with teaching experience in private language institutes subscribe more closely to the tenets of communicative language teaching and thus can act as powerful agents of sustainable language teaching in Iranian public schools.

In this contribution we shall focus on the project of philosophy for communities carried out at the Liceo “Vasco-Beccaria-Govone” (Mondovì , Italy) within the IX edition (2016) of the CeSPeC Summer School on Futures, imagining the world of tomorrow. Philosophy is understood as a practice, an experience, a creation of concepts, an inquiry, as an exercise of argumentation and research. Thanks to this view, a dialogue has opened up with the pupis of this school. In this contribution we present the perspective of a post-philosophy for children and we understand it as an opportunity for philosophy in itself.

This article seeks to understand why it is relatively easy for today’s individuals to acquire new behaviors, how the mechanism behind such acquisition developed, and how it is socially coordinated. Empirical findings reveal that new behaviors are mostly acquired unthinkingly. Hence, revisiting practice theory, I propose the concept of meta-habit to help us understand the blind and automatic acquisition of new behaviors. According to Pierre Bourdieu, habitus acquired primarily in childhood generates practices and contributes to the reproduction of the social order. Meta-habit includes disposal toward being open to situational context, toward inquisitiveness, and toward reading the external clues of behavior. Meta-habit generates practices on the basis of influences in the symbolic community: in this way practices are coordinated socially. Meta-habit is responsible for the reproduction of the social order in situations when the social space is very dynamic-this being the case of late modernity, which is a system comprising myriads of fields.

Birdcages, nestboxes, bushes, or on attitudes to wild birds in the space of Warsaw at the turn of the 20th centuryThe article attempts to present how at the turn of the 20th century the attitude of the inhabitants of Warsaw towards wild birds living in the city was being shaped. The author focuses on objects used to allocate such birds their space within the city, on practices related to birds and discourse concerning this subject. She points to changes that were initiated then, mainly by members of Warsaw Society for the Protection of Animals and journalists publishing in its magazine, „Przyjaciel Zwierząt” (Friend of Animals).

This paper aims to present in detail those provisions of the Act on competition and consumer protection which require an urgent change and its justification. This will answer the question to what extent and how specifically a revision of the consumer provisions in the Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2007 should proceed. Especially, since the main objectives of the proposed amendments do not include substantive and procedural changes in the consumer provisions, but only emphasize that changes in other regulations (which also applies to consumer rules) intend to eliminate inconsistencies in interpretation and drafting.

No account or discourse on Kāśī goes without claiming the extraordinary status of the place; the city is considered the eternal tīrtha, where all notable places of Indian sacred geography are represented by local replicas; moreover, according to Puranic tradition Kāśī dwells on Lord Śiva triśūla, surviving the universal dissolution for it exists outside space, beyond time. The perception of the historical place gets often confused with the mythical image forged by the māhātmya tradition and supported by different actors in the course of time (sacred specialists, “new Hindūs”, nationalists, orientalists and tourists). The paper deals with the image of Kāśī beyond time and space and analyses its construction through history and society. Basing our reflections on the phenomenological approach to the study of spatial dimension, we want to highlight the interactions between the struggle of creation of a mythic space of the city and the inevitable intrusions and contributions of lived places and their practices, as depicted in the visual sources on Banāras.

This paper focuses on the practices between parent and child firms in corporate spinoffs. We uncover the enacted aspects of knowledge, called knowing, through theories from seven cases of incumbent-backed spin-offs and find that the management of the parent firms are highly involved in the spin-offs. The practices associated with spinning off are solving problems, involving multidisciplinary expertise and entrepreneuring management at the parent firm. We contribute to the spin-off literature by discussing the knowledge required for successfully spinning off child firms and to practice theory by empirically uncovering the practical understanding involved in the origin and perpetuation of an organization.

This paper sets out to study recent developments in the relatively new area in management theory- Age Management. First the general labor and financial market conditions are specified which have led to the growing need of an age-oriented strategy for employment in the company. Next the concept of Age Management is defined, both from the macro, enterprise-level and individual perspectives. The next section studies the benefits derived from implementing Age Management for the company and its employees, followed by a section on specific Age Management tools and measures. The penultimate section explores the prerequisites for successful implementation. This paper finds that Age Management as a concept is gaining ground, predominantly in managing and retaining near-retirement-age workers. Concluding, we find that there is a significant need for more comprehensive Age Management and effective Age Management measures to maintain firms’ and economies’ competitiveness in the face of demographic decline.

This paper focuses on the collaboration practices between spin-offs and their customers and suppliers. With empirical material from seven cases of incumbentbacked spin-offs, we find that suppliers are highly involved in the development of the innovation that spin-offs are based upon and specifically, the practices of understanding customers, identifying a market gap and collaborating with suppliers. We contribute to the spin-off literature by revealing which activities are at play for successful spin-offs, and we contribute to practice theory by empirically uncovering the general understandings in the perpetuation of an organization and the nets between the spin-offs and their suppliers.

The article deals with the concepts of kingship, "comitatus" and loyalty as depicted in the Old English poem “Beowulf” and how these concepts of the Anglo-Saxon era were changing in favour of Christian God. The article also shows how this change was not completed fully and suggests that the perceived instability is caused by incomplete subjection of the Anglo-Saxons to Christian conventions. That is where free subjectivity can be found and that is also the main thesis of the paper. The article first offers a short analysis of Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology and proposes several reasons why and historical pieces of evidence that Althusser’s theory is applicable for the medieval period. The article then analyses “Beowulf” and provides some historical information to explain the above mentioned concepts in the Anglo-Saxon era.

The article is dedicated to the actualization of the interdisciplinary spatial perspective as a study of the experience of living-experiencing in the horizon of human history. Despite the fact that increasing attention to the problem of urban space in XX-XXI centuries is caused by intensive industrial and post-industrial urbanization, it's being considered that the city itself has always been the embodiment of social specialization. Now we observe not the formation of a new spatial subject of study, but the "spatialization" of the research perspective. The main trend of modern spatial theory is not just urbanism but its human dimension in sensory fragmentation. According to this, it is assumed that planning and studying of urban space abandon Modern unifying and rational representations of space and re-actualize the rejected sensorial spaces of representation. And although such postmodernization de-differentiation is not neoconservative, in the Ukrainian discourse, these searches for non-repressive solutions are often limited by "rethinking", re-actualization of pre-modern issues – the question of symbols, images, archetypes – or absolutizing of aesthetic-subjectivist perspective.

This paper examined residents’ environmental sanitation practices across different residential zones of Osogbo, Nigeria. The stratified residential zones are the traditional zone, the transition zone and the sub-urban zone. A total of 194 residents were selected for survey using systematically sampling technique. The study revealed that residents’ socio-economic characteristics varied significantly with different residential zones. Findings revealed that there is low level of access to environmental sanitation facilities across the residential zones. Similarly, the proportion of residents’ with environmental sanitation facilities in their homes was low. The study established poor environmental sanitation practices among the residents in terms of utilization of available amenities across the residential zones. It recommended the provision of environmental sanitation facilities in homes by residents and communal provision of facilities by government and Community Based Organizations (CBOs), environmental education and also the enforcement of environmental regulations in the city and others with similar setting.

W niniejszym artykule zbadano środowiskowe zachowania sanitarne mieszkańców różnych stref w Osogbo w Nigerii. Wydzielone strefy mieszkalne to strefy tradycyjna, przejściowa i podmiejska. Wykorzystując systematyczną technikę doboru próby, dokonano wyboru 194 respondentów do badań.

The article discusses the issue of changes which take place in a close relationship when a couple is having a baby. The results of 46 qualitative research are presented – these are in-depth interviews conducted with mothers of young children. The theoretical inspiration for the presented analyzes is D.H.J. Morgan’s theory of family practices. Thematic analysis was used. The interviewees pointed to the following unfavorable changes in the relationship, which occurred after the birth of a child: the lack of time and energy to build relationships with a husband/partner; the inability to spend time (at home or out) without children; the limitation of sexual contacts; and tensions which are generally of a temporary nature. Few women were of the opinion that the appearance of a child brought them closer to their husbands/partners and had a beneficial effect on their intimate relationships.

Scientific literature presents the labour market policy in Poland in an abstract way: through the prism of statistics, expenditure, regulations and organisational structures. However, we know very little about everyday work of public employment services (Powiatowe Urzędy Pracy, PUP), i.e. institutions created in response to a major societal problem of the unemployment. Referring to the research results, inspired by the street-level bureaucracy perspective, this paper explains why it is important to analyse routine, mundane activities of frontline staff of PUP. It also reconstructs which elements of academic narratives on the labour market policy in Poland move us away from the understanding of typical aspects of this administrative world.
