The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of privatization of public safetyin Latin America. In the first part, the author indicates the determinants of the process and characterizes the private security sector in the region. Then he analyzes the legal status, paying particular attention to the status of security companies, surveillance mechanisms and relations of private entities with the police. In the third part, the author shows the problems resulting from the lack of supervision over the private security sector. It focuses on the problem of abuses and violence. It is essential to respond to the questions about the role and importance of the private sector in public security systems in Latin American countries.

Celem artykułu jest analiza fenomenu prywatyzacji bezpieczeństwa publicznego w Ameryce Łacińskiej. W pierwszej części autor wskazuje uwarunkowania procesu i charakteryzuje prywatny sektor bezpieczeństwa w regionie. Następnie analizuje stan prawny, zwracając szczególną uwagę na status firm ochroniarskich, mechanizmy nadzoru oraz relacje prywatnych podmiotów z policją. W trzeciej części autor ukazuje problemy wynikające z braku nadzoru nad prywatnym sektorem bezpieczeństwa. Skupia się na problemie nadużyć i przemocy. Priorytetowe znaczenie ma odpowiedź na pytania o rolę i znaczenie prywatnego sektora w systemach bezpieczeństwa publicznego w państwach Ameryki Łacińskiej.
