The purpose of this paper is to determine if the assumptions of the English school of the theory of international relations are capable of ensuring peaceful relations between countries in the international arena. The author presents the development of international relations on the level of economic, political and military relationships, including the discussion of problems that plague the contemporary world. The analysis of the situation of the international community in the era of globalization, including existing threats, conflicts, terrorism, as well as social and economic changes perceived in terms of security enables one to determine what influence the balance of power has on global security. The included assessment of the international situation takes into account contemporary problems, also indicating a new type of aggressor – an enemy with no legal capacity (i.e. terrorism), which is the most serious threat to the security of the contemporary world. The author also points to the new phenomenon of mass migration, which is generated by problems on the African continent, and which is a new challenge to the international community.
