The subject matter of the study is the presentation of questions which are connected with the notion of the phoneme. The authoress intention was to approach the reader not only with the meaning of this notion but to show how differently it can be understood and what role it plays regarding the usage of a language. The effect of presented considerations is the presentation of own capture of a phoneme with the help of chosen principles of cognitive linguistics, particularly the theory of prototypes.

The article presents theoretical considerations concerning the relationship between the original text and the texts of translations with the use of the cognitive categorization model. From the perspective of the theory of prototypes, translation studies can be conducted at the general level of texts: the source and the target and at the detailed level: translation units and their translation equivalents. The structure of a category will depend on the researcher’s intuition and their decision to choose the unit in the center of the category under consideration. The aim of the paper is to propose several new categorization models, reflecting the various possibilities of building a category of translations with a central-peripheral structure at the level of the texts as a whole. This is due to the consideration of whether and in what sense the original text can be perceived as a prototype in relation to the translation text? In the center of the translation category, it is possible, for example, to place an ideal translation of the original, potential or actually existing in the host culture. The central-peripheral structure of translation category may also be useful in presenting the results of the translator’s decision-making process regarding the selection of a translation equivalent, as well as in the process of critical analysis of various translation solutions, especially in translation series, which, however, is beyond the scope of the present article.

The aim of this article is to show how the act of paying compliments may be used as a tool of persuasion strategies. The author points to the most important (in the context of this topic) differences between persuasion and manipulation, presents determinants of a prototypical act of paying compliments and determinants of the act of paying compliments in the capacity of manipulation and persuasion. The main subjects of the study here are those features of a compliment which make it a tool usable in persuasion. By analyzing authentic, real life statements, the author shows ways of using compliments as a means to influence the interaction partner and discuss the factors that decide about its persuasive effectiveness (the issue of interlocutors’ “face” and the influence on interpersonal bonds, among others). To analyze the act of complimenting in this article the following tools — based on cognitive linguistics research — are being used, among others: theory of categorization based on prototype, Lakoff’s radial category model and Johnson and Talmy’s force dynamics model.

The One Form/One Meaning Principle. The Case for Case. Part IThe main topic of the paper is the problem of validating linguistic procedures aimed at representing the meaning of cases as they are employed in two invariant-oriented approaches to language and grammar: in Roman Jakobson’s ‘feature-based’ framework and in Gustave Guillaume’s Psychomechanics of Language. Also taken into account are trends within the cognitively-oriented approach to grammar, whose proponents object to procedures based on the structuralist principle: one form/one meaning. Ultimately, by invoking the methodological prerequisites of cognitive linguistics, as introduced in Ronald Langacker’s version of cognitive grammar, the author claims that, inasmuch as cases are concerned, there seems to be, in principle, no contradiction between introducing a stable relationship between the linguistic sign and its meaning, and positing the prototype-centered and network-based structuring of a linguistic category, as advocated in cognitive linguistics. The conclusion is that any of these three linguistic traditions could benefit by taking into account the findings of the other two approaches. Zasada jednej formy/jednego znaczenia. Przypadek do przypadka. Część IW artykule autor omawia kwestie związane z oceną wartości językoznawczych strategii i procedur modelowania znaczenia form przypadkowych w dwóch inwariantywnie zorientowanych podejściach do języka i gramatyki – Romana Jakobsona matrycowym ujęciu cech semantycznych oraz Gustave’a Guillaume’a psychomechaniki języka. W toku wywodu autor analizuje teoretyczne uwarunkowania konstruktów służących badaniu i reprezentowaniu znaczeniowych inwariantów kategorii przypadkowych oraz form będących ich tekstowymi realizacjami. Autor bierze też pod uwagę wątpliwości przedstawicieli kognitywnie zorientowanaych badań nad kategorią przypadka dotyczące wartości wyjaśnień uzyskiwanych za pomocą modeli odwołujących się do strukturalistycznej zasady jedna forma/jedno znaczenie. Odwołując się do ustaleń gramatyki kognitywnej Ronalda Langackera i jej zwolenników, autor konfrontuje je z ustaleniami przywołanych wcześniej badaczy i stwierdza, że w kwestii semantyki form przypadkowych nie ma zasadniczej sprzeczności między strukturalno–funkcjonalnym postulowaniem ustabilizowanej relacji między znakiem językowym i jego znaczeniem a prototypowo–sieciową organizacją kategorii językowej proponowaną przez zwolenników ujęć kognitywnych. Ponadto autor konstatuje, że pochodzące z trzech różnych tradycji językoznawczych wyjaśnienia kwestii znaczenia form przypadkowych wzajemnie się dopełniają, odsłaniając wieloaspektową naturę tego zjawiska.

The paper discusses a diagrammatic type defined as a quantitative iconicity principle and one of the aspects of imaging within the theory of cognitive grammar developed by Ronald W. Langacker. On the example of a fairy tale by A. N. Tolstoy, it distinguishes manners of categorization of the world, which follow a specific semiotic principle in Russian. The findings of the analysis enable treating the principle as an example of a radial category. Further, the article includes the results of comparison between Russian structures and their translation into Polish, with the quantitative iconicity applied as tertium comparationis.

В настоящей статье рассматривается тип диаграмматичности, определяемый как принцип количественной иконичности и один из аспектов образности в теории Рональда В. Лангакера. На примере сказки А. Н. Толстого выделяются способы категоризации мира, которые в русском языке реализуют данный семиотический принцип. Результаты анализа позволяют воспринимать количественную иконичность как пример радиальной категории. В статье проводится также сравнение конструкций русского языка с их польским переводом, tertium comparationis составляет количественная иконичность.
