The term respect is frequently used in ordinary communication however it also has a significant role in philosophical discussions focused on environmental ethics. This essay deals with the ambiguity of the term respect. The author analyzes respect from a philosophical point of view claiming that several possible interpretations of what the word respect means and what standards of behavior to which it is to be related. It is pointed out that the issue of whether respect should be understood as an attitude or behavior. The author highlights the problem of constraints imposed by respect and the relation of respect to intrinsic and instrumental value. The approach is analyzed also from the point of view of Kant’s ethics, nevertheless the author examines it also from the standpoints of various contemporary environmental ethicists (e.g. Taylor, Goodpaster, Katz, Lo). However, author concludes that understanding respect as a virtue appears to be a most promising approach in contemporary environmental ethics because it can solve the problem of finding balanced interpretation of respect.

Education has a key role in building and ensuring a safe world for mankind. Today it takes on a special importance because we have moved beyond the safe space of action for humanity. Scientists are issuing a red alert for Earth. In order to avoid the worst, we have a duty to take extraordinary emergency measures. A necessary step is a radical change in education. Its overriding goal must be to shape the attitude of a young person in the sense of unity with nature, capable of caring for other nonhuman beings. In this article, I present ten tips that should be an integral part of the educational process if we want to educate a generation of people who are aware, empathetic, and able to take effective action to resolve the climate and environmental crisis.

Edukacja ma do odegrania kluczową rolę w budowaniu i zapewnieniu bezpiecznego świata dla ludzkości. Dzisiaj nabiera szczególnego znaczenia, gdyż przestrzeń, która dotąd była bezpieczna dla ludzi, przestała taką być. Naukowcy ogłaszają czerwony alarm dla Ziemi. Aby uniknąć najgorszego, trzeba podjąć nadzwyczajne, kryzysowe środki. Konieczna jest między innymi radykalna zmiana w edukacji. Jej nadrzędnym celem musi być ukształtowanie postawy młodego człowieka w poczuciu jedności z przyrodą, zdolnego do troski o inne byty pozaludzkie. W artykule przedstawiono dziesięć wskazówek, które powinny kształtować proces edukacyjny, jeżeli chcemy wychować pokolenie ludzi świadomych, empatycznych, zdolnych do podjęcia skutecznych działań w celu zażegnania kryzysu klimatycznego i środowiskowego.
