The purpose of this article is to discuss the totalitarian experience of a human being through the study of The Joke, the first novel by the Czech writer Milan Kundera, written in 1965. Although the work allows us to approach the phenomenon of Soviet totalitarianism through the historical scenario in which the characters develop, alluding without any doubt to the apogee and decay of the Soviet regime in Czechoslovakia, this paper intents to place totalitarianism as a tendency contained in the modern individual. That is, the representation of totalitarianism as an existential situation.

The vast majority of Jan Balabán’s works are short stories. They are regarded by many as dark and obscure, which led some to discover symbolic dimension of his prose. The form of writing applied by the author could have been influnced on the one hand by American literature and on other hand by evangelical way of education he got at home. Typical for protestants was teaching children biblical stories, especially New Testament parables. The analysis of Jan Balabán’ works lead to discover many biblical quotes and motives in his books. He creates some of his stories in the image of New Testament parables and describes some of the characters as if they were biblical heroes. He also name some of them in the biblical way by giving them prefix „no” at the begining of their names. There are many differences between the form of parable used by New Testament and the stories of Jan Balabán. However, some similarities can also be seen. This seems to give his prose some existential dimension.

Angel Wagenstein’s novel Farewell, Shanghai is this article’s focal point. The attention focuses on the literary picture of the Shanghai ghetto (Hongkew district) during the Second World War. Wagenstein shows the ghetto as symbol of the end of the Jews’s eternal wandering, where they found autonomy from other nations, and reunification based on sufferings and religion. Before them there stands the long-awaited promised land, where they themselves will govern themselves.

The central theme of Rachilde’s Les Hors Nature, written at the peak of French nationalism, is the confrontation between two nationalities, representing two cultures, two homelands and two personalities. The novel describes two opposite positions: a cosmopolitan one versus a traditional and historical one. Rachilde, despite her open anti-German declarations during the two World Wars, seems here inclined to much more moderate opinions. She does so in her own way, combining ideological statements with a wish to be original and provocative.

For over twenty-five years, Rachilde regularly commented on approximately thirty novels a month, in the column she signed for the Mercure de France. Sometimes her readings concluded in opinions on novelistic aesthetics, sometimes she spoke out on social issues or other prevailing matters. Thus, the texts she read became pretexts for presenting opinions sometimes far from literary subjects. Considering Rachilde’s sulfurous reputation, it seems interesting to examine her point of view on morality. The article focuses on some specific points contained in this notion: the relationship between the sexes, marriage and divorce, prostitution, offspring.

Franz Kafka is undoubtebly an important part of the literary canon of the Central Europe and especially of the canon formed by Milan Kundera in his works. Kundera considers Kafka to be one of his principal masters. He sees Kafka as an antecendent of surrealism and existencialism. According to his collection of essays The Art of the Novel, Kafka is the prototype of the ideal author who invites us to cross the border of the probable showing us the world from the other side. Thus, we can observe the human existence in different and better way. By showing this, he fills up the main task of every novelist. The contribution will analyze the alludes of Kafka in the work of Kundera and will try to describe their character and explain how Kundera works with examples of Kafka and his work in his own books.

Among the traumas associated with the First World War, Giraudoux was particularly sensitive to amnesia, to the point of making it the main subject of a novel: Siegfried et le Limousin. Adapted to the scene in 1928, this novel contributed to author’s fame and inaugurated his collaboration with Louis Jouvet. In fact, the principle of forgetfulness persists throughout the whole Giraudoux’s work: comical, dramatic or poetic, and it is also the main pretext for a meditation on memory.

Arywista to typowy przykład „dziecięcia dziewiętnastego wieku”. Te wydarzenia otwierają przed młodymi ludźmi wielkie możliwości, stymulują ich wyobraźnię i rozbudzają w nich ambicje powodzenia i podboju ówczesnego świata.

An arriviste is a typical example of a ‘child of the nineteenth century.’ The arriviste is a product of social and political developments such as The French revolution, Napoleonic rule and the industrial revolution. The changing climate of the nineteenth century provides new opportunities for young people, stimulating their imagination and awakening their ambitions to conquer the world. The ‘arriviste’ is a character in movement. The French term ‘arriviste’ first appears in the nineteenth century, and describes a hero who is ‘still arriving’, having not yet accomplished his career ambitions. An ‘arriviste’ is thus different from a parvenu, as he has not yet succeeded. The ‘arriviste’ usually begins his career when he leaves his family home as a young adult. He leaves behind his rural village or town, aiming to find success in the capital. He moves through social classes, shifting from his own modest milieu to socializing with the wealthy upper classes. The ‘arriviste’ is a literary character who unites himself with geographical and social displacement. Furthermore, he is often considered as a displaced hero. In search of a new position, he risks being considered as a usurper, unable to find the right place in the Society.

This paper presents an overview of Montenegrin children’s literature which provides the context for an analysis of the children’s novels of Dušan Kostić. Kostić is known for various literary genres, from poetry and prose (short stories and novels) to journalistic narratives, travelogues and critical works. This author is hardly less prolific in children’s and young adult literature, as he published five works intended for young readers: the poem The Town Jelengaj (1954) and four novels: Deaf Cave (1956), Sutjeska (1958), Blue Treasure (1963) and Chestnut Mountain (1967). Many of his motifs and themes are derived from his memories of a difficult childhood spent in poverty at the time of economic crisis after the First World War. Kostić followed the tendency of lyrical and artistic expression, the most expressive means of his own poetics, in the creation of children’s books. In his works, Kostić describes with poetical liveliness his own childhood and the circumstances in which he grew up. Thus, he can rightfully be considered one of the main representatives of autobiographical narrative fiction among Montenegrin writers.
