The paper proposes to compile an inventory of visitation records and inventories of churches and parishes in the Samogitian Diocese from its creation until 1845, i.e. until the last full visitation in the diocese before it was expanded. It is necessary to gather data from source materials and organise them because primary sources are scattered in various archives, mainly in Vilnius, Kaunas and St Petersburg. It is estimated that the number of pages containing visitation protocols and inventories of the Samogitian Diocese amounts to several tens of thousands. In order to solve this problem, the article postulates the creation of an inventory of visitations and church inventories, an excerpt of which is included in the appendix to the article. Such an inventory would include basic information about the history of the churches as well as the year the document was prepared, its exact location in the particular archive with its archival reference number, and notes that characterise the primary source and provide information on its publication in a source edition if applicable. This is not a completely new idea in Polish scholarship, but the concept has been modified by the author and may prove helpful for many historians. It will certainly facilitate and expedite any research into the history of the Catholic Church in Samogitia. Appended to the article is a sample inventory for the parish church and two chantries in the town of Radziwiliszki. This is an inventory of 81 visitations and inventories, which roughly constitutes three hundredths of the total source material available for the Samogitian Diocese.

This article provides a source edition of two instructions for ringing bells at St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Church in Toruń (Thorn). The sources come from the collection of archival files related to the history of this church, kept in the State Archives in Toruń. They date back to the first half of the sixteenth century. The authors attempted to establish the purpose of writing down the presented ordinations, characterized the church servants that appear in the source material and examined their duties regarding bell ringing. The article also examines the fees paid for ringing bells during church services and the associated remuneration for bell-ringers. Moreover, particular attention was paid to the liturgical calendar of the parish of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Church in Toruń.

In 2019, Wojciech Tygielski published a new book, the fruit of in-depth research on the relations between early modern Poland-Lithuania and Italy, and on the Italian settlement within the borders of the Commonwealth. The purpose of this discussion article is to present the biography of Giovanni Battista Jacobelli as an original narrative resulting from an unconventional methodological approach, and more broadly, as a significant example of contemporary biographical writing. Particular attention is paid to the numerous digressions that appear in the narrative, here considered a deliberate methodological procedure aimed at filling the gaps created by the relatively poor primary sources which constitute the basis of the research. Moreover, the relevance of the reviewed study from the point of view of the present day is raised, as the reviewed book prompts making comparisons between historical reality and modern-day experiences, and reflecting on the permanence of certain social phenomena. The discussion article also contains comments on the extensive source edition contained in the appendix to the reviewed book. The article challenges the author’s approach to presenting the early modern Italian correspondence to the reader, and to the degree of required modernisation.

The discussion article provides an analysis of a book recently published by Wojciech Krawczuk entitled Records and Regesta of the German Expedition of the Royal Swedish Chancery of King Sigismund III of the Years 1597–1600. The book contains a source edition of the minutes of the royal chancery of Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania (1587–1632), and King of Sweden (he retained power in 1592–1599), written around 1600, which has been supplemented by extensive regesta prepared by the editor. This discussion article evaluates this form of providing access to the contents of primary sources against the background of similar source editions consisting of records created by other royal chanceries, namely the chancery of the Kingdom of Poland, the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the chancery of the dukes of Mazovia. It is noteworthy that increasingly more archival materials are made available online through the websites of various archives and other institutions that preserve historical documents. In view of the growing trend to digitalize primary sources and make them available online, the idea of publishing complete source editions including full source texts, which began at the beginning of the twentieth century, seems unjustified nowadays. Currently, the solution proposed by Wojciech Krawczuk, based on the publication of regesta, appears to be the most favourable. Perhaps it would be appropriate to link the published regesta even more closely to the digitized archival materials by providing each one of them with a link or QR code that would refer to the website hosting the relevant digitalized source. The content of the documents included in the reviewed book differs significantly from the content of the records created by the chanceries of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Swedish documents are dominated by current affairs, primarily concerning military and diplomatic issues, and include much fewer normative acts, such as appointments to offices and bestowals of landed property.

One area in which significant progress has been made in the publication of sources in recent years is the editing of sejmik records. The fundamental question facing publishers of sources is the issue of editing priniples. Publishers of Lithuanian sejmik records are in a peculiar situation, as they face the problem of publishing sources in Polish and Ruthenian in one volume. Meanwhile, in Polish editing practice, there are no strictly defined rules for publishing Cyrillic sources, and contemporary experience in this matter is quite modest. The team preparing the edition of the sejmik records of the Vilnius voivodship from 1566–1655 faced a similar problem. In the course of the work, in order to determine the principles of editing the text, the existing theoretical models and solutions adopted in publishing practice were analyzed and evaluated for their suitability for the tasks ahead. This article will analyze contemporary publishing instructions and methodological recommendations for the publication of Cyrillic sources formulated in Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian editing, as well as selected source publications of Cyrillic documents from the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 16th–17th centuries. The conclusions of the analysis will be used to formulate proposals for specific solutions for the publishers of sejmik records.
