The subject matter of this article is the institution of the Speaker in the British parliamentary system. All the remarks, set out in the article, focus on four major themes: 1) genesis of the office, 2) mechanism for election and the duration of the term of office, 3) impartiality and, 4) scope of the powers produced by legislation or created in parliamentary practice. As can be seen then, the concept of the article enables the contemporary institution of the Speaker to be portrayed including the historical background. It also enables the author to prove his main thesis, indicating that all the changes concerning this institution, which have been made over last couple of years, resulted neither in enhancing nor in weakening the parliamentary role of the Speaker as a neutral arbitrator between political parties in the UK parliament.

Research on the use of verb tenses in Czech subordinate clauses is based on the notions of absolute and relative tense and on the distinction between content and adjunct clauses. It is generally agreed that absolute tenses are used in adjunct clauses, whereas relative tenses are typically used in content clauses. Based on an analysis from the Czech National Corpus, I will demonstrate that, in addition to the assumed use of tenses and in contrast to their usage in English, there are also variations in their use: in content clauses, even tenses selected from the speaker’s perspective are used in certain cases, and in certain adjunct clauses relative tenses may also be used.

Woroniecki formulates his conception of the ethos of a speaker against the background of analyses of the conditions of telling tales understood as literary transcripts of living speech transmiting the wisdom of previous generations and addressed to a specific recipient. There is a close connection between the ethos of a speaker (his/her moral condition) and the ethos way of persuasion, a connection conditioned by the specificity of human nature. The way of revealing the speaker’s attitude, and the way in which the ethos reveals and interacts are inseparably connected with the speaker who is a man who cognizes and acts. The imitation or fabrication of the ethos, which is instrumental or detached from the speaker, are contrary to Woroniecki’s position. The specificity of the ethos persuasion (according to Woroniecki) consists in the fact that this persuasion is carried out in connection with the nature of a speaker who is capable of (moral) self-improvement, and of the creative presentation of his development to the auditorium.

This article discusses the problems of modern language communication associated with setting up contacts between the listener and the speaker. The author analyzes the communicative model of four ears, which was proposed by the German psychologist Friedemann Schultz von Thun for the interpretation of speech messages, and Paul Watzlawick’s five axioms of communication. The paper presents their influence on building relationships between interlocutors during a language contact.

В настоящей статье рассматриваются проблемы современной языковой коммуникации, связанные с построением контактов между слушающим и говорящим. Автор анализирует коммуникативную модель „четырёх ушей”, которую предложил немецкий психолог Фридеманн Шульц фон Тун для интерпретации речевых сообщений, и аксиомы человеческой коммуникации Пола Вацлавика. В работе представлено их влияние на построение отношений между собеседниками во время языкового контакта.

In this article it is argued that various (and partly conflicting) voices of different speakers emerge from the Carmina Anacreontea and that they invite the readers to actively engage in a productive dialogue with the collection.
