François Emmanuel’s novels are divided in two categories: Summer Tales, which are light-hearted and filled with bitter-sweet irony, and Winter Tales, that are more solemn and tragic. We will investigate the diptych formed by Regarde la vague (2007) and Le Sommeil de Grâce (2015), both Winter Tales: the latter is set in the heart of the Winter, though the other is set at the end of a warm Summer. By comparing how each season is described in each novel, and how it affects the narrative settings, we aim to enlighten animportant part of François Emmanuel’s aesthetics.

ObjectivesThis study examined the physiological strain experienced by workers employed in motor-manual timber harvesting performed in winter and summer, and the applicability of heart rate indices for estimating energy expenditure.Material and MethodsThe heart rates (HR) of 2 teams consisting of 2 persons working simultaneously during felling and forwarding, in both winter and summer, were measured. Heart rate at work (HRwork), resting heart rate (HRrest), relative heart rate (%HRR), ratio of working heart rate to resting heart rate, and 50% level were used to estimate the physiological workload in particular jobs. The HRindex (HRwork/HRrest) equation was used to estimate the energy expenditure (EE). ResultsFor all jobs, significantly higher physiological workload and energy expenditure were recorded during winter.ConclusionsThe season significantly affects the physiological workload during logging operations. If there is no possibility of harvesting wood in summer, in order to limit the workload of workers during winter activity, attention should be paid to the proper organization of work and selection of workers.

The beginning dates and the lengths of thermic seasons in Warsaw (1951-2004) were analysed. These characteristics of seasons are very variable, especially in winter. The changes of winter length influence strongly the dates and length of adjacent seasons, that is, of early winter and early spring. The current warming is best visible exactly during these seasons: winter becomes shorter, while early winter and - to an even longer degree -early spring become longer. The period of spring, summer and autumn is characterised by grater stability. These seasons showed a very weak tendency to change on even its lack, both as regards the length and the beginning date.
