This article considers upward mobility of UK Polish migrant workers by introducing a Bourdieusian habitus perspective. Drawing mainly on the interview data it was inquired whether the intelligentsia habitus understood as an example of embodied or learned “social expectations” concerning the position in the social hierarchy provides Polish migrants the motivational scripts for learning and innovating in the labour market. It was found that the intelligentsia habitus can legitimize successful jobs seeking strategies of some respondents. However, this paper also notes that a significant number of analysed respondents were unable to mobilize cultural capital resources and remained in a vicious circle of long hours of monotonous factory work that has created an additional constraint complicating their learning capabilities.

Aim. The research aim of this article is to explore academic youth’s education process and career in the UK. The research focuses on Lithuanian students from three prestigious British universities. Methods. The study revealed three questions: the reasons of students choises to study in prestigious higher schools of the UK, students’ satisfaction in terms of their education process; their placement in the labor market, or academic/business career. To answer the research questions qualitative research was conducted by using structured, partly-structured in-depth interviews, the questionnaire forms, discussions, and observation methods. Results. The analysis of the empirical research data revealed that the determining factor of students’ choices was the high quality of the studies and international work perspectives after graduation as well as the rating of the universities and the recommendations of senior fellow students, progressive learning and living environment. Furthermore, they had the possibility to become part of the international social web. The results of the survey indicate that students give more value to individualism emphasizing achievement, critical thinking, high level of education. They also appreciate the possibilities to apply knowledge in real-world setings, also to the career in international business or academic field, which is garanteed by most reputable universities. In such evironment students are encouraged to be responsible actors and to create a more sustainable world (UNESCO (ESD), 2017). Cognitive value. With the help of a case study of education in the UK, the paper reveals the sustainable education perspectives.

There are different solutions to the problems of defense preparations. Individual countries fulfilling the tasks, covering a range of defensive preparations. The regulations retain the individual character, which results from the history, tradition, geopolitical situation, administrative divisions of the state. This paper presents a comparative description of the different legal forms in the defense of such countries as Germany, Finland, the UK and Sweden.

Objectives: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has serious economic and social consequences – global, regional, and local. The overall goal of the paper is to investigate the dynamics of housing markets in selected European countries during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research Design & Methods: We evaluate housing indicators in three European countries: Spain, Italy, and the UK. We explore house prices and other housing market indicators, such as transaction volume or rents. The paper also discusses major policy concerns regarding the effects of COVID-19 on housing welfare and urban transformations. Findings: We found out that the COVID-19 pandemic had a strong impact on housing transaction volume and housing preferences. We observed a transitionary house price decrease in the UK, but no significant effect was detected in Italy and Spain. Implications / Recommendations: Due to concerns related to housing affordability and overwhelming housing costs, housing policy should target vulnerable group of tenants and property owners. Contribution / Value Added: Despite some obvious transmission mechanisms, the effects of the pandemic on the real estate sector have not been investigated comprehensively in the real-estate, housing, or urban literature to date. This paper aims to fill this gap by discussing the consequences of the pandemic on the housing sector in Europe.

The issue of teaching staff advanced training is paid much attention in many countries. In the Republic of Moldova progressive professional credits system is used. Credits are scored not only in assigning teaching degrees or issuing a certificate of continuing professional education, but also for teachers’ evaluation at the educational institution. Advanced training of teaching staff in France is provided by various institutions of postgraduate education, university institutes and regional centers of education in order to help teachers to renew their professional knowledge and at the same time to refocus it on the level of consciousness according to the real problems of school and the community. The feature of teaching staff advanced training in France is that it is teachers’ personal matter and duration of all periods of training should come to one year during all professional career. In Finland, teaching staff advanced training is organized directly in schools under aegis of the National Board of Education, the National Centre for Advanced Training in Education, departments of teacher education and other faculties of higher educational institutions on credit system basis. Among the topical forms there are targeted, cascade, common (cooperative) teaching and learning by own example. In the UK, advanced training takes place in two models: the course model based on higher educational establishments and school based in-service education. The main purpose of advanced training system is to familiarize teachers with theoretical and practical innovations in educational activities, progressive teaching technologies, and consolidate their skills of independent acquisition of knowledge necessary for their professional development.

Populism is a complicated phenomenon, as this concept not only differs in both approaches and manifestations, but also has taken shape in countries and regions outside Europe. While intellectuals are constantly criticizing and seeing this phenomenon as a threat to be prevented, millions of people across Europe are simultaneously showing support for movements, parties and individuals with populist ideology. This contradictory picture shows that the emergence of populism is essentially a reflection of a range of unstable and unsettling socio-political problems, as well as the extreme emotions and powerlessness of the people in such situations. The paper therefore aims to look at the driving factors behind Brexit, thus examines populism under individual, group, state and system levels of analysis. By clarifying the views of Vietnamese intellectuals on populism, the paper then discusses the posibility of the rise of populism in the current socio-political situation in Vietnam.

Populizm jest zjawiskiem skomplikowanym, ponieważ koncepcja ta nie tylko różni się zarówno w podejściu, jak i przejawach, ale także ukształtowała się w krajach i regionach poza Europą. Podczas gdy intelektualiści nieustannie krytykują i postrzegają to zjawisko jako zagrożenie, któremu należy zapobiegać, miliony ludzi w całej Europie jednocześnie okazują poparcie dla ruchów, partii i osób o ideologii populistycznej. Ten sprzeczny obraz pokazuje, że pojawienie się populizmu jest w istocie odzwierciedleniem szeregu niestabilnych i niepokojących problemów społeczno-politycznych, a także skrajnych emocji i bezsilności ludzi w takich sytuacjach. Celem artykułu jest zatem przyjrzenie się czynnikom napędzającym Brexit, a tym samym zbadanie populizmu na poziomie analizy na poziomie indywidualnym, grupowym, państwowym i systemowym. Wyjaśniając poglądy wietnamskich intelektualistów na temat populizmu, artykuł następnie omawia możliwość wzrostu populizmu w obecnej sytuacji społeczno-politycznej w Wietnamie.
