Children’s Universities operate at many universities in Europe, including Poland. Their functioning differs from each other as there are no binding guidelines for their administration, as they do not belong to the current education system. They are a form of self-improvement and development and fi t in with the ideas of lifelong learning. The classes organized at universities are intended for children of all ages. They have different forms and lead times. Various issues are discussed there. Such a university operates, among others, at the Ignacy Mościcki State Vocational University in Ciechanów and within its five-year activity, it has already become part of the structure and image of the university.

Uniwersytety dziecięce działają na wielu uczelniach w Europie, w tym także w Polsce. Ich funkcjonowanie różni się od siebie, ponieważ nie ma żadnych obowiązujących wytycznych dotyczących ich prowadzenia, gdyż nie należą do obowiązującego systemu edukacji. Stanowią formę doskonalenia oraz rozwijania samego siebie i wpisują się w idee kształcenia przez całe życie. Organizowane na uczelniach zajęcia przeznaczone są dla dzieci w różnym wieku. Mają różne formy i czas realizacji. Poruszane są na nich różne zagadnienia. Niniejszy artykuł zawiera informacje na temat historii powstania uniwersytetów dziecięcych i ich działalności w Polsce. Głównym celem jest przedstawienie na tym tle działalności Uniwersytetu Dziecięcego w Państwowej Uczelni Zawodowej im. Ignacego Mościckiego w Ciechanowie. Swoją pięcioletnią działalnością Uniwersytet wpisał się już w strukturę i obraz ciechanowskiej Uczelni. Co roku w okresie wakacyjnym na Uniwersytet zgłaszają się dzieci z Ciechanowa i okolic, a następnie uczestniczą przez jeden rok akademicki w zajęciach o różnorodnej tematyce.

The presented study addresses the issue of the concept of lifelong learning based on Polish experience, on the basis of the latest research: the international programme: Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (Study on an international scale, realised for the first time in Poland on a sample of more than 9 thousand people) and Polish reports: Report on the State of Education 2013-Teachers Matter, and Social Diagnosis 2013-the Labour Market and Social Exclusion in the Context of the Perception of Poles. The presented study and the authors’ considerations revolve around the concepts of: learning, schooling, undertaking educational activity by adults, which, as clearly indicated by the research results, constitutes an insignificant part of Polish society. This situation puts our country on one of the last places in the ranking of highly developed countries.
