The principal objective of the present article has been to explore if incorporating contextualization activities into teaching unfamiliar words in teaching English as a foreign language is conducive to students’ vocabulary expansion and refining their word knowledge. The paper aims to supply an insightful analysis of the action research study undertaken by the present writer as well as a report on its findings. The major goal of the study was to examine the value of context-based instruction as well as activities employed for the purpose of the students’ vocabulary development. The results obtained from the research revealed that the contextualization is not only a beneficial tool for enhancing the students’ vocabulary growth and consolidation, but a relevant motivating factor as well.

This case study investigates the effectiveness of the application of the blended approach to teaching a foreign language. The approach can be defined as a combination of a face-to-face classroom component with online instruction (Graham 2003). In the present study the element that was blended within the face-to-face component was asynchronous computer mediated communication in the form of e-mail exchanges between a native speaker of English and a Polish learner of English. The effectiveness of the approach was measured in terms of expanding vocabulary knowledge. The findings revealed that e-mail correspondence treated as an integral part of a language course helped the student to expand her vocabulary, eliminate the majority of spelling mistakes and influenced the complexity of her writing.

Improving student understanding of a foreign language culture is anything but a peripheral issue in the teaching of a foreign language. This pilot study reports on a second year required English course in a university in Japan that took a Literature Circles approach, where students were asked to read short stories out of class and then discuss these stories in class. Although students reported that they did not gain any special insights into the target language culture presented, they did report that reading fiction as source material for classroom activity helps with the acquisition of a vocabulary set that is more closely associated with lifestyle and culture. The results suggest that further study is warranted. Procedures of this pilot study are described and interpreted in the context of the English education system in Japan.

The keyword method is nowadays one of the most discussed mnemonic strategies. This study investigates its effectivity in comparison to rote learning for vocabulary acquisition in 61 Slovak high school students. The data were obtained from two vocabulary tests and analysed using Mann-Whitney U test. We found out that the keyword group obtained significantly higher scores than the rote-learning group. Participants were also asked to provide a written feedback on the use of the method. Finally, suggestions are made to improve the learning process.

Metóda kľúčového slova (z angl. keyword method) je v súčasnosti jedna z najviac diskutovaných mnemotechnických stratégií. Táto štúdia skúma jej efektivitu v porovnaní s mechanickým učením pri nadobúdaní slovnej zásoby u 61 študentov slovenskej strednej školy. Dáta boli získané z dvoch testov slovnej zásoby a vyhodnotené použitím Mann-Whitneyho U testu. Zistili sme, že skupina s metódou dosiahla signifikantne lepšie výsledky ako skupina s mechanickým učením. Participanti boli tiež požiadaní o písomnú spätnú väzbu na používanie metódy. Na záver sú podané návrhy na zlepšenie vyučovacieho procesu.

In recent years there has been a growing interest to incorporate hypertext glosses into L2 reading materials and accordingly, it has provoked researchers to uncover to what extent and under which moderator variables a specific type of gloss yields more effective outcomes than other types of glossing. The present meta-analysis attempts to examine the magnitude of the effect of different gloss types (single vs. multiple glosses) on L2 vocabulary acquisition along with identification of the contextual factors that influence between-study variation through synthetizing 34 primary articles which satisfy the inclusion criteria. The overall effect size is found to be + 0.83 (p<0.05), indicating that multiple glosses (text+visual) has a large, positive effect on learners’ vocabulary acquisition than single mode of glossing (text-only). Moderator analyses further suggest that intensity of the program and L2 proficiency level are potential moderators influencing the heterogeneity between effect sizes, whereas the learning context, sample size and research design do not have such impact.

This paper emphasizes the need to include collocational competence in the model of lexical competence. Different ways of understanding of the notion “collocation” are presented together with the existing models of lexical competence. Next, a new model of lexical competence is pro-posed, i.e. the model covering lexical competence as well. The Author presents her original concept of collocational competence and argues for its development in vocabulary extension at a foreign language class.

The author notices that insufficient mastering the foreign language vocabulary may remarkably impede the communication process. Thus, it is important to form proper lexical habits based on methodical enriching the lexicon and the grammatical rules. This positively influences the communication improvement – both oral and written. The article presents the analysis of psycholinguistic regularities that influence the proper vocabulary acquisition, with the special attention paid to the memorising processes and the rules of proper memorising, as their knowledge is crucial for planning the work on enriching the lexicon and creating exercises on learning new vocabulary.

Watching media with subtitles at this time when streaming platforms have gone into our lives, have become a habit for a lot of people’s daily live. We consider this as an opportunity for students of Spanish to continue practicing the language once they are not in the classroom. These platforms provide subtitles in many languages and this tool might be helpful when studying a new one. Given that there is scarce data in this line of research, this study seeks to contribute to it by demonstrating that viewing media may improve de vocabulary acquisition (apart from other skills) and proving that subtitles may help in this process.
