The article is devoted to the analysis of phonetic processes in the area of vocalism in the names of the Christian population of Podlasie. The analysis showed that the absorption and functioning of Christian names in the colloquial language and dialects of Podlasie in the 16th–17th centuries in the area of vocalism were determined by the conditions for the development of Slavic phonology and phonology characteristic of the languages and dialects of the region. In the inlaut of the names, heterosyllabic vowels and diphthongs were adapted. In the analyzed period, the transformations of vowels were influenced by changes in consonantism, the quality of vowels in adjacent syllables and paroxytonic accent in Polish as well as dynamic and variable accent in Belarusian.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the onymic cultural tradition of the believers of Judaism and Christianity in Podlasie. The author also discusses how the coexistence and integration of various cultural elements is reflected in the anthroponymy of both communities in the region. Stemming from Judaism, Christianity incorporated many elements of Jewish culture, which can be observed in various spheres. From the onymic perspective, it regards mostly biblical names from the Old Testament, which are included in the repertoires of names of both Jewish and Christian inhabitants (Abraham - Abraham, Beniamin - Benjamin, Jakub - Jacob, Józef - Joseph, Szymon - Simon; Anna - Anna, Elżbieta - Elisabeth, Maria - Mary etc.). In Podlasie, from the 15th c. up to the 20th c., the coexistence and mutual influences of both cultures contributed to diminishing differences in the onymic sphere, which is reflected in the presence of identical basic forms of biblical names, and the short forms derived from these names. The syncretism is even more apparent in the surnames of Podlasie inhabitants derived from the same anthroponymic, toponymic, or appellative bases by means of identical derivational suffixes.

The common layer of Jewish and Christian name systems consists of biblical names from the Old Testament. The comparison showing how these Old Testament names functioned in both faiths on Podlasie in 15th–16th centuries revealed a close connection between chosen names as well as their popularity over the centuries and cultural traditions formed by faith.

The wise policy of stimulating the social processes in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania caused strong integration trends in area of the ethnic diversification of the population. A phenomenon of tolerance enabled inhabitants of Podlasie the coexistence and the symbiosis, gave a base to create the syncretic culture of the borderland. It was manifested in onomastics. On the one hand, the anthroponymy of Podlasie is reflecting the coexistence of many languages and cultures, on the other - forming some identifying formulas common for all ethnic and religious groups. The synergy and overlapping different patterns in onomastics showed results in hybrid formations and some structures, typical only for given region, what was the most reflected in an abridged names and surnames forms of Podlasie inhabitants.

Changes in urbanonymy of north-eastern Poland in the context of statehood transformation Urban place names are a chronicle of the history of a given territory and its inhabitans. They are evidence of crucial changes ocurring over a long period of time, especially in the borderland area, to which the region of Mazury, a part of the north-eastern Poland, belongs. Over years the region was the territory of contention between Poland and Prussia, during the Second World War it was under German occupation, since 1945 it was within the borders of PRL (the Polish People`s Republic), in the sphere of Russian influences. In 1989 the period of independence and statehood transformations began. In each period the mechanisms of giving new names to town objects and of changing the existent ones were similar. They reflected the culture of the nation, important events, historical figures, ideas and values in a given historical period. Giving names commemorating various, often controversial figures of political life such as generals and political leaders, was closely connected with the current policy of the state authorities, for instance Hinderburg Strase was changed for Armii Czerwonej (the Red Army), in free Poland since 1989 the street has been named Armii Krajowej (the Home Army; Polish under groun military organization during the Second World War).
