The article focuses on the Italian oratorio in Poland in the period of Stanisław August Poniatowski (1764–1795). In that time Italian dramatic genres were of a great importance in Polish cultural life as they were considered, together with the French dramaturgy, the main source of inspiration for many Polish poets and musicians of the second half of the XVIII century. Apart from Italian "opera seria", also Italian oratorio used to be frequently executed in Poland and the librettos were published not only in original version but also translated in Polish, some of them even more than once. The reasons for which the Polish versions of Italian librettos were prepared were various and the destination of the translation was crucial to the form of the text. The aim of the article is to verify if and how the transfer from Italian to Polish had an influence on the oratorio considered a musical-literary genre.

In this article we briefly analyze how the role of this technique has changed throughout the years within the major language teaching theories so as to get to the reasons for its reassessment we can observe nowadays. Finally, we present some considerations on how we can use activities based on translation in the classroom with a particular regard to Italian language teaching to adult learners who are native speakers of Polish.

Techniques for developing lexical competences in teaching Italian for foreigners on advanced levels (B2–C2) Translation as a technique in foreign language teaching and learning has always had its followers and adversaries. Nowadays translation of a brief text is usually suggested at the end of a unit so as to consolidate the input offered during the previous lessons, but it can be also used as a technique to recall and put into practice single words in an easy and fast way. The teaching techniques presented in this article are based on associations between Italian words and also between the Italian language and the students’ mother tongue. The examples that we analyze enable us to consider translation as an effective way not only of fixing vocabulary items but also of drawing students’ attention to cultural differences between the two countries.
