A comparison of the 1979 and 2008/2009 volumes of the Onomastica journal reveals a decrease in the number of critical reviews in favour of shorter discussions and reviews of a more reporting character. Smaller difference is to be found in the two volumes between the papers classified as rozprawy (‘dissertations’). The primary focus remains on place and personal names (fore-, nick- and surnames) and relevant etymological, motivational and wordformative comments, but also on common nouns captured in Polish proper names. Innovation is observed both in studies on new proper names, and in a new choice of auxiliary sciences (the interdisciplinarity of onomastics: the old, manifest in the adduced fragments of reviews – and the new, apparent in the paper Co onomasta ma z religioznawcą? Ku onomastyce interdyscyplinarnej (na przykładzie nazw Kościołów i związków wyznaniowych w Polsce) (‘What does an onomast have in common with a student of religion? (On the example of the names of churches and religious associations in Poland)’)).

With regard to the issues discussed during the debate on The Polish Language of Four Generations that took place on 21st February 2012 in the Presidential Residence, the author tries to indicate the problems that the Commission for Names of Places and Physiographic Objects keeps facing in their works (proper names found in the belles-lettres are also prone to depreciation). The main problems result from the willingness to acquiesce traditional usage with the rules of standard Polish. The lack of financial subsidy for the work of the members of the Commission has a negative effect on the preparation of the next issue of the Official List of Place Names in Poland.

We received observations from PESEL on the number of appearances of given names for use for research purposes. I chose names which are lately, according to my knowledge, very popular and compared their numbers, as well as the frequency of bearers of names, with the names included in the dictionary of Józef Bubak and the dictionary of Jan Grzenia published later, in 2002. I also used in my article the observations of Professor Edward Breza and the conclusions of the committee appointed by the Polish Language Council (consisting of Prof. Irena Bajerowa, still living at the time, Prof. Julian Kornhauser, and myself, Prof. Aleksandra Cieślikowa) to evaluate the names presented by Prof. Breza. The number and proposals for studying corresponding names (on the basis of the materials provided by PESEL) are in the article. Proposals regarding double letters (sounds) and frequently used diminutives (Kuba) were the subject of discussion at the plenary session of the Polish Language Council. Not all the committee’s proposals were accepted, which is discussed in the above article.
