Editorial topics have almost always been included in the field of book studies, but for a long time they were not subjects of systematic research. It was only in the second half of the 20th century, with a rapid development of the publishing market, that interest in editing grew considerably, leading to the emergence within bibliology of a set of questions called today bibliological editing (as opposed to scholarly-historical and philological editing). A need to develop editing understood in this manner was noted by Leon Marszałek (1912–1996), an outstanding Polish publisher, editorin-chief of encyclopaedias and dictionaries at the Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe press, author of scholarly and expert publications in which he consistently popularised the idea of editing as a separate discipline practised as part of book studies, called for comprehensive research to be carried out in this area and attempted to formulate its curriculum. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the editorial concept presented in Marszałek’s most important theoretical works. The author discusses his views on the subject matter in question and the scope of editorial research, its aim, methodological basis as well as interdisciplinary links. It is worth recalling those views as an interesting point of reference for the reflection on the current state of bibliological editing and its status in contemporary books studies.

The aim of the article is to present selected research issues related to pictorial dictionaries for children. The most important issue is the role of dictionary illustration in the transmission of social and cultural content. Illustrations published in dictionaries for children explain meaning of words, but also contain non-linguistic knowledge about environment and culture and so they can be considered as a cultural medium. Modernisation of the journal's operations and translation into the English language of articles published in Ars Educandi in 2012-2017 were financed with funds from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as a part of the task Science Promotion Activity (pl. DUN). The task ‘The implementation of the editorial module on the platform of Uniwersyteckie Czasopisma Naukowe – a system facilitating the editing and management of the academic journal Ars Educandi‘ was financed as a part of contract 661/P-DUN/2018 of 12.06.2018 from funds of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education designated for the promotion of science. The task ‘The creation of a modern online version of the academic journal Ars Educandi through the implementation of the publication module on the platform of Uniwersyteckie Czasopisma Naukowe and the handling of international indexing databases’ was financed as a part of contract 661/P-DUN/2018 of 12.06.2018 from funds of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education designated for the promotion of science.

The article examines typography and lettering which co-create the meaning and persuasive potential of the verbal and graphic message. Selected press advertisements demonstrate such methods of typographic layout of text which together with its meaning and graphics form a coherent whole, thus facilitating multicode understanding of the message. The author discusses the relation between typography and message content: typography may strengthen the emotional or associational layer of the text message, it may illustrate the meaning of the text, and, finally, it may be a source of additional content, independent from the semantics of the written text.

The article attempts to describe the functions which diminutives perform in denomination of body parts. Several groups of diminutives naming parts of the body have been discussed, in whose meaning next to the information about a small (smaller) size there are also various additional semantic components, primarily related to the emotional nature of the word.

The article focuses on the forms and functions of pictorial illustrations in online dictionaries. New technologies offer many possibilities for explaining meaning of words. The starting point is whether online dictionaries use the illustrations for this purpose and whether they do the same as paper dictionaries.

W artykule omówiono formę i funkcje elementów graficznych (ilustracji) w słownikach internetowych. Nowe technologie stwarzają wiele różnorodnych możliwości prezentowania znaczenia słów; punktem wyjścia przeprowadzonych analiz jest pytanie, czy słowniki internetowe wykorzystują w tym celu ilustracje, a jeśli tak – czy czynią to w sposób odmienny do tradycyjnych słowników drukowanych.

Semantic relations between verbs in Polish WordNet 2.0The noun dominates wordnets. The lexical semantics of verbs is usually under-represented, even if it is essential in any semantic analysis which goes beyond statistical methods. We present our attempt to remedy the imbalance; it begins by designing a sufficiently rich set of wordnet relations for verbs. We discuss and show in detail such a relation set in the largest Polish wordnet. Our design decisions, while as general and language-independent as possible, are mainly informed by our desire to capture the nature and peculiarities of the verb system in Polish.
