This paper is intended as part of a larger research that aims to the realization of a monographic study dedicated to the Romanian translations of Dante's Inferno, from 19th to 21th century. It is a historical and critical approach, intended as an interdisciplinary study, to be placed at the crossing of disciplines like translation history, translation criticism, reception theory, history of literature, history of literary language, cultural history. The bibliographical selection we propose is complete with some methodological and deontological considerations of utility in the study of the history of translation.

This article presents the effects of the translator’s self-censorship on the reading of a contemporary Italian novel that has been deprived of all vulgar and licentious terms. Discarding as irrelevant the question of whether the translator’s action is an attempt to please society or a result of her private sense of prudery, my intention is to inventory and comment on the differences between the original and the translated text, in order to reveal and thus somehow undo the effects of censorship and to bring justice to the writer and her work.

The period between 1840 and 1900 saw the full or partial translation of a significant number of Italian opera librettos, a phenomenon whose analysis can prove most insightful from the point of view of translation history as well as from that of the history of language and of cultural history. The translation of the Italian librettos was carried out in an environment marked not so much by cultural endeavours, but rather economic ones, taking into account the level of the public‘s musical and cultural illiteracy and their reduced financial means.
