The need to write an essay on the history and sociology of culture, submitted here to the reader, arose in the fall of 1975 under rather peculiar circumstances. Therefore, despite the considerable lapse of time, I remember them perfectly. The case happened long enough to rethink it and see it from a broader historical perspective. The impetus for similar activities was the university seminar which I taught for a quarter of a century together with prof. GrazynaSzelagowska at the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw. The seminar, entitled “Film as a historical source” was largely devoted to Polish film and the political and social conditions in which film art operated in the times of the Polish People's Republic (see also: Cegielski and Szelagowska (2011: 5–18).
