The article is a partial presentation of women who helped shape the Polish linguistics before 1939. The author analyses their contribution in the Polish Linguistic Society and their influence on the development of the “Poradnik Językowy”, an important journal of that period. The article is an overview: the author also describes the possible theoretical framework of the future “her-story” of Polish linguistics.

Autorka bada leksykalno‑semantyczną kategorię pamięci we współczesnej polszczyźnie, jej redefinicje i rekontekstualizacje. Ukazuje najważniejsze metafory pojęciowe (m.in. pamięć jako naczynie w umyśle), utrwalone w dawniejszych i współczesnych słownikach językach polskiego. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Autorka wskazuje, że pamięć rozszerza obecnie swoje znaczenia, z jednej strony w stronę biologii/ psychologii i wysokiej technologii, z drugiej – w stronę potoczności, prywatności, dystansu i humoru.WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Badanie tekstów internetowych pokazuje znaczne przemiany w obrębie domeny pamięci. Tworzone są nowe quasi‑definicje i nowe profile znaczeniowe tego słowa, te mniej istotne jeszcze kilka lat temu – obecnie stają się centralne. Artykuł pokazuje, w jaki sposób analizy językoznawcze mogą prowadzić do refleksji kulturoznawczej.

In the paper I will discuss various ways of constructing the notion of the future in popular “bestselling” psychological self-help books (sometimes referred to as “motivation” or “inspirational literature”). They are mainly Polish translations of English-language books by such authors as L. Buscaglia or R. Byrne. I will take into account both their linguistic and their cultural aspects. I am interested primarily in the most important elements of the notion of the future in these works; in how this discourse is formulated through the choice of specific textual means; in what type of narrative accompanies it, in to what extent it is emotional or intellectual, directive, commissive or declarative; in the function of these texts in modern culture.

The article deals with the relations between sex and shopping (wider: the contemporary forms of sexuality and lifestyle of consumerism) and biological, psychosocial, cultural reasons of such connections. The author analyses jokes about sex&shopping, popular scientific media texts, movies and popular literature, in which the two ideas sex&shopping are collected and compared. She also shows material categories: sex industry, prostitution, sponsoring. She investigates in which economical and social conditions the symbiosis of sex and shopping is successful. She hypothesizes that the formula sex&shopping is a kind of important metaphor for the contemporary society, shows the constant emancipation ambitions of women in the realm of economics and sex, characterizes ‘singles’ culture’ and the one type of feminism at the turn of 20thc., which is named power-dressing or glamour feminism.

The article attempts to present one of the trends in linguistics which blurs the distinction between the central and the peripheral. The author proposes that the margins and peripheries are potentially more fertile and conducive to the development of their respective fields. This is due to the fact the progress in linguistics is not linear but based on qualitative turns and breakthroughs during which certain trends prevail whereas other are confined to the margins of the discipline. The new dominant trends owe their success not to their superiority but to their effectiveness at a given moment and conformity with the needs of their times. The dominant trends are relatively stable (synchronically) but the new and seminal is provided by peripheral niches which create innovation. Such ‘outsiders’ are responsible for epiphanies, brilliant ideas and creative solutions which break the mould of established trends. ‘Subversive linguistics’ is a label that can be attached to certain conscious procedures in linguistics which, whilst not uniformly critical of the dominant trends, try nevertheless to create a field of innovation and scope for creative change. The ‘subversive’ part of the label refers to the attempts to undermine the established notions of traditional linguistic from the inside and alter them creatively.

Language, dialogue and public speech – in Jerzy Pilch’s columns (in the light of Mikhail Bakhtin’s concepts) The main research objective of this article is to reconstruct reflections on Polish language issues in Jerzy Pilch’s columns (1952–2020). Among other things, the author poses questions concerning the evaluation of the state of contemporary Polish contained in these texts and the existing – according to Pilch – relations between language and the social context. The textological analysis and interpretation of the selected columns is made with the help of some concepts of the eminent humanist Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), such as polyphonicity, dialogue, speech genre… The analysis demonstrates the importance of the theme of language in Jerzy Pilch’s column writing. His reflections range from the general contemporary Polish language to individual words, their history, semantics and connotations. The meta-linguistic motifs of the columns concern not only private speech, everyday conversations, but also dialogue in the public, political sphere. Pilch’s assessment of contemporary Polish is generally negative. Descriptions of linguistic usus dominated by Internet slang and unnecessary English neologisms prevail. However, language, Pilch believes, is a ‘self-cleaning’ mechanism.

The article is an evaluation of the contribution of women to the development of the “Onomastica” journal in the years 1955–2016. The author presents the “feminised” history of the journal as an equally valid alternative to the “typical” masculinised timeline. The theoretical context here is based on M. Foucault’s concept of power-knowledge and the idea of herstory in science. The article shows general numerical tendencies regarding women’s contributions to the article throughout 60 years of its existence and describes differences and discrepancies. The author outlines how during the first 30 years of the existence of the journal (1955–1985), there were not many female contributors, but their number grew between 1985 and 2016. The author argues that the reason for such changes is the emancipation of female scholars in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and structural changes in the academic life in Poland after the Second World War. She highlights the work of scholars whose influence on the journal has been the most significant since the establishment of the journal, such as M. Karpluk, M. Malec or H. Popowska-Taborska.

The article deals primarily with names given the youngest male and female Poles in the 39 largest cities of Poland during the last 16 years (1995–2010). The author shows the general numerical structure of these anthroponyms – there are 6,292 such names. Also a subject of interest are anthroponyms of very low frequency (4,701 names have a frequency of being given one to three times). Then the author compares a ranking list of the one hundred most frequently selected given names in the largest cities of Poland during the years 1995–2010 with a similar list of frequencies for names most often used through the whole 20th century, pointing out similarities and differences between them. The author also discusses the statistic distribution of the masculine and feminine Polish names currently most popular in large cities. She notes the similarities and divergences in regard to preference in selection of these names in large cities in comparison with the capital (Warsaw), Mazowieckie voivodeship, and Poland as a whole.

The text deals with the problem of multiculturalism as a concept which functions in social sciences and humanities; it also functions in onomastic research and in the theory of onomastics. The author in her reflection refers to the recently published monograph “Names and Naming. Multicultural Aspects” edited by O. Felecan and A. Bugheşiu (Palgrave Macmillan 2021, pp. 490). In the first part of the article, the author briefly explains the most important concepts related to this issue, including: globalization, glocalization, transethnicity, cultural hybridity. She draws attention to the changes in their understanding in contemporary humanities and social sciences. She presents the most important assumptions of the monograph and the possibilities of including the important concept of multiculturalism into onomastic research carried out all over the world. In the described studies, proper names become an important determinant of individual and group/ethnic identity. The second part of the article presents detailed concepts and research approaches presented in the volume, concerning e.g. proper names in the USA, Russia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. The third part discusses the texts of Polish authors, with particular emphasis on Professor Barbara Czopek- ‑Kopciuch’s (1952‒2020) “Multiculturalism in Polish Toponymy”, which is her last onomastic text. In conclusion, the author pays attention to the application of the notion of multiculturalism in empirical research and in theoretical reflection in onomastics. She stresses the necessity of interdisciplinary research in this field.

Clifford Geertz in Onomastics? A Few Thoughts after Reading Artur Rejter’s Book “Proper Names in Con/texts of Culture” The article is an attempt to reflect upon the way in which some terms coming from modern anthropology (local knowledge, thick description) can be used in studies regarding proper names in the cultural and social perspective. This anthropological way of thinking has been presented in Artur Rejter’s new book “Proper Names in Con/texts of Culture”. The author of the article shows that studying culture through proper names must entail the widening of the variety of scientific methods and strategies and adding those used in social studies and humanities.

This article aims to present several gender theories related to linguistics which could be useful for contemporary onomastics. The author would also like to demonstrate their applicability (especially the theory by R. Connell) in particular onomastic and textological analyses. In the first part of the article, the author explains that there are numerous ways to define gen¬der within the discipline of gender studies. The author focuses on constructivist and performative approaches, especially on those which understand gender as a discursive and normative category. In the second part, the author presents four gender theories by: J. Butler, R. Connell, J. Scott, and by French feminists (J. Kristeva, H. Cixous), paying attention to their methodological value: un¬derstanding gender as a linguistic/performative/semiotic/symbolic/discursive category, as a group of textual practices (games) existing in the dominant culture, and the maintenance or defiance of gender. All of those notions can be related to different groups of onyms and their associated com-municative practices. In the third part, the author presents the directions of research conducted in post-1945 Polish anthroponomastics in the field of feminine names (she is particularly interested in lexical, systemic, and contextual (social, historical etc.) mechanisms. In the empirical section, the author formulates her most important assumption concerning re¬search of gender onomastics in the media (Polish women’s magazines): femininities are constructs, primarily of a normative, model-creating function, they produce hierarchy and difference; proper names are important “notional nodes” in those constructs. The analysis claims that there are at least three different femininities: dominant (celebrity), banal (anonymous) and defiant (rebellious). Female proper names are an important part of each construct as their arrangement (name and sur¬name, name alone, diminutive of the name or culturally-loaded name), along with the appropriate description of their bearers, can give an impression of the popularity and familiarity of certain people and of their high social status or of their anonymity, closeness or unreality.

The article directly and indirectly refers to anthropological and philosophical texts which strive to discover and present the gender factor as important in the light of the humanities. The author refers to “Literackie nie-nazywanie. Onomastykon polskiej prozy współczesnej” (Literary Not-naming. Onomasticon of the modern Polish prose) by Magdalena Graf and indicates the femininity factor as a relevant one also in onomastics.

The author tries to describe the contemporary sociological inspirations in the Polish onomastics in the second half of the twentieth century, in the early twenty-first century and in a future. She shows development phases of Polish onomastics argues that now it is the interdisciplinary, not only linguistic, field of knowledge. The influences, compounds and inspirations of the sociology in the onomastics have a long tradition (sociolinguistics) and now are visible on the three levels: terms and concepts (for example: an attitude, social conflict), sub-disciplines of sociology (for example: the sociology of the language, the sociology of the knowledge) and the sociological paradigms and the theories (for example: the ethnomethodology, the sociology of everyday life).

The main purpose of the article is an attempt to demonstrate that spirituality can become one of the more important terms defining culture. We indicate that the so-called new spirituality is a useful term explaining many phenomena in modern culture. We present various contexts and uses of both lexemes, both in the humanities and in social sciences, as well as in non-religious and non-academic contexts. In our approach spirituality is a term of universal and suprareligious nature. It defines human striving for transgression — in and outside religion — both in the social and in the individual dimension, striving in the name of values considered by an individual as higher, positive, good. New spirituality is defined here as related to today’s mediatised and technicised Western culture. It is strongly individual and does not require any institution as its environment. It denotes an area of human life where human beings concentrate on working on their consciousness in cooperation with their corporeality.

Onomastyczna analiza dyskursu

The article is a synthetic discussion of the discourse analysis method from the onomastic perspective. In our opinion, proper names are not merely linguistic signs - they are also social constructs, often highly politicised, forming various textual and discursive relations. Names understood in that way are often crucial to (re)constructing  social reality. Thanks to the methodological orientation used, names can be a good tool for identification, discovery and interpretation of important aspects of discourse. In our opinion, the use of particular names is not random, but it helps us discover objects vital for the analysis of axiology and ideology of discourse. The method we propose should provide tools used in analyses of all onymic spheres (name categories). The text also highlights the theoretical framework of the method and a proposal of a research procedure in onomastic disourse analysis (ODA) is shown. Moreover, examples of analysis domain are indicated: discourse types and name categories related to them.

Dzięki takiej orientacji metodologicznej mogą one stanowić dobre narzędzie do identyfikacji, ujawnienia i interpretacji kluczowych aspektów dyskursu.

In light of the publication of the last volume of the onomasticon “Polish Anthroponymy of 16th–18th Century”, the authors reflect on the inspiration for the dictionary. They highlight the role of Professor Aleksandra Cieślikowa in shaping the concept of the volume and present stages of its creation and publication, as well as indicating the importance of describing anthroponymic phenomena in a historical and sociocultural context. The authors discuss the structure of each entry and of the whole dictionary and the sources used. The uniqueness of the onomasticon, owing to the variety of textual data referred to in the dictionary, is emphasised. The authors believe that “Polish Anthroponymy” may be a good starting point for further syntheses for other researchers.

In this article we present several problems connected with the so-called interdisciplinarity of contemporary onomastics. We consider, among other things, the eclecticism of its methodology and the degree of “equality of rights” of various social and humanistic sciences in the study of personal names. At the same time, we present a dialog position in this matter that is based on coexistence without conflict as partners in linguistics and other fields of knowledge in the scientific description of onyms. To illustrate the usefulness of such dialog thinking in onomastics, we analyze the names of churches and denominational connections from the perspective of linguistics (narratology) and onomastics as well as sociology and history of religion. It is our judgment that, thanks to such a multifaceted treatment of linguistic material, we can more fully show the complexity of these names’ motivation, their historical origin, and the multiplicity of functions fulfilled at present in the sphere of religious and social life.
