The article discusses how risk and trust – interpreted as social phenomena characteristic of the late modernity era – are reflected in the concerns related to everyday food choices of residents of Poland. It postulates a link between the perception of food-related threats and the meanings associated with different food procurement practices, and the specifics of a local value system and its historical determinants. Based on the analysis of responses from 70 interviewees speaking about food-related concerns, it outlines diverse strategies for verifying food choices and the types of trust that are granted to various social actors who take part in the production and distribution of food. Since the strategies and forms of trust are largely associated with social and cultural assets of consumers, the article also brings into focus their stratifying aspect, as well as levels of overall trust in people, institutions and abstract systems.

The aim of this paper is to analyze food preferences and food practices in Poland, and also to attempt to determine their potential for diagnosing the direction and nature of socio-cultural change in the country after its political and economic transformation. This analysis is based on the findings of a nationwide survey on food patterns conducted in 2013, the findings of qualitative research on food preferences and food practices conducted in 2014, and archival data from qualitative research on lifestyles in Polish towns conducted in the late 1970s. The preference for eating traditional home-cooked meals within the family circle and the high appreciation for self-produced food as opposed to food from the market all indicate a relatively high level of conservatism and reluctance to change among Poles. The analysis shows that the social changes that have occurred in the last quarter of a century in Poland are not that significant compared to the economic and political changes. The specific historical-cultural context has had a major influence on the direction of these changes, making them far different from those observed in Western societies.

The article is an introduction to the collection of texts presented in this issue on various prospects and opportunities for re-using data from qualitative social research. We reflect on how such re-analyses influence the deeper thinking about methodological issues connected to research activity in the field, the status of the data and the contexts of their production and the character of sociological knowledge created on their basis. We are also trying to summarise the six years of activity of the Qualitative Data Archive at the IFiS PAN and describe the changes that have taken place at this time in the approach to sharing research data both in Poland and abroad.

Social Stratification and Eating

EN
Patterns of eating, as an element of lifestyle and consumption, constitute a major research area in the social and health sciences. The study of eating patterns focus on what pe ople eat, whether they eat alone or in company, where they eat, how often, and under what circumstances. For decades, research on eating within sociology had been somewhat neglected, but in recent years there has been an explosion of interest in this topic. In Poland, however, social scientific inquiry into practical, social, and cultural aspects of food has been minimal. Using data from a nation-wide survey carried out in 2013 and in-depth interview with 60 respondents conducted in 2014, we attempted to answer two questions: (i) to what extent eating patterns reflect existing inequalities and stratification, and (ii) to what extent they have been affected by globalisation and Western lifestyle. This article discusses theoretical background of our research, its empirical basis, and summarises the basic results.
