The article was written based on the author’s master’s thesis entitled The tombstone of Prince Bolesław III and his wife, the Duchess, in the Franciscan Church of the Holy Trinity in Opole prepared under the supervision of Dr. Hab. Dariusz Tabor, professor at the UPJPII in Krakow, and defended in 2024. In her reflections, the author examines the tomb sculpture of the Duke of Opole, Bolko III, with the dimensions of a work of art. The comprehensive approach to the issue of the tombstone of Bolko III and Anna means that the collected literature has revealed perspectives on various research fields, i.e. the issue of the conditions and social functions of the tombstone, the symbolic structure and the ideological content contained in the representation. The author’s goal is to describe, read, and name what is visible. In order to then look deeper, understand what we are looking at. Art, because it communicates mainly through symbolism, and a symbol is something that must be read in order to understand the entire work. Learning the symbolic meanings that allow the artist to go beyond the boundaries of creative matter will become available and explored in this study.

Artykuł został napisany na podstawie autorskiej pracy magisterskiej pt. Nagrobek księcia Bolesława (Bolka) III i jego żony księżnej w kościele Franciszkanów pw. Świętej Trójcy w Opolu, przygotowanej pod kierunkiem ks. dr. hab. Dariusza Tabora CR, profesora UPJPII w Krakowie i obronionej w 2024 r. W rozważaniach autorka przygląda się rzeźbie nagrobnej księcia opolskiego Bolka III z rodu Piastów o wymiarze dzieła sztuki. Całościowe ujęcie problematyki nagrobka Bolka III i Anny sprawia, że zgromadzona literatura odsłoniła perspektywę na rozmaite pola badawcze, tj. zagadnienie uwarunkowań i funkcji społecznych nagrobka, strukturę symboliczną i treści ideowe zawarte w przedstawieniu. Celem autorki jest opisanie, odczytanie i nazwania tego, co widoczne, aby następnie zajrzeć głębiej, zrozumieć, na co patrzymy. Sztuka bowiem komunikuje się głównie poprzez symbolikę, a symbol jest czymś, co należy odczytać, aby zrozumieć całe dzieło. Poznanie symbolicznych znaczeń, które umożliwia artyście wyjście poza granice materii twórczej, stanie się dostępne i zgłębione w niniejszym opracowaniu.
