In Poland, homosexual older adults born before 1960 grew up in times when heterosexuality was considered the only right sexual orientation. In the so called pre-liberation era, homosexuality was treated as mental disorder. Homosexual persons were marginalised, discriminated or even invisible in family, professional and social life. During the course of life, they experienced loneliness, isolation, shame, humiliation, disapproval and rejection from family and friends. They were under surveillance (Operation Hyacinth) and forced to enter into heterosexual marriages. Facing homophobia, they hid their sexual orientation, which caused them many sufferings or decided to defend it despite the risk of being stigmatised. As they were trying to find their place in the world, they used different strategies of dealing with difficult situations, some of them constructive (fighting for independence), some negative (addictions, suicides and suicidal thoughts), The goal of the study is to explore life situation of homosexual older people, with particular interest in difficult experiences and strategies adopted to deal with them – from the biographical perspective. a particular focus will be on dealing with own ageing. It is likely that senior homosexuals are more at risk of lonely life, disability, poverty, homelessness, social isolation, depression, alcohol addiction, housing deprivation and premature institutionalization. They have less developed support network. On the other hand, experiencing discrimination during their lives may prove helpful in dealing with the challenges of ageing. Homophobia, still present in many environments, may place older homosexual persons at risk of double invisibility – due to their age and sexual orientation. Lack of research into the situation of senior homosexuals in the Polish society results in the lack of adequate support systems and relevant education for social assistance staff. The practical objective of the study is to identify daily problems of homosexual older adults and, consequently, to develop solutions to build adequate support system. The study is qualitative, using case study and in-depth interview. Five interviews with homosexual individuals aged 60 and more were analysed.

The globalisation of the media industry leads to the dissemination and perpetuation of similar cultural patterns of old age, which may open up new horizons of development in the period of late adulthood, as well as inhibit the emancipation potential of the oldest generation and perpetuate old age stereotypes, both negative and positive, thus limiting the pool of patterns available to subsequent generations. Recognising the need for discourse on the patterns of old age presented in the mass media, an analysis of The Voice Senior programme (first edition 2019/2020), broadcast on the first channel of Polish Television, was conducted. The aim of the research was to recognise the educational significance of the programme and to develop postulates important for shaping the positive image of older adults in the media. The nature of the research was non-reactive. Qualitative content analysis was carried out after recording all statements of participants, coaches and presenters. The analysis consisted in identifying conceptual categories relevant to the subject of the research and then subjecting them to interpretation. The recognised categories were the following: the educational dimension of the biographies of the programme participants; old age as a developmental period of life; stereotypes of old age; hidden dimension of meanings; intergenerational qualities of the programme; educational aspects of the master-pupil relationship.

W artykule dokonano opisu najważniejszych objawów choroby Alzheimera, a także przeglądu badań nad demencją i projektowaniem środowiskowym, zwracając szczególną uwagę na związek pomiędzy rozwiązaniami architektonicznymi a zmniejszeniem negatywnych objawów choroby Alzheimera. Wskazano na kierunki przyszłych badań mających na celu doskonalenie projektowania środowiskowego z myślą o podnoszeniu jakości opieki nad osobami starszymi w warunkach instytucjonalnych.

The ageing of the Polish population requires active response in many areas of the state’s social policy. One of these areas is securing the housing needs of the older people. At present, the main pillar of the assistance system addressed to the dependent seniors is the family care. In the light of the constant fall in the birth rate in Poland, which began in the early 1990s, and the ongoing migrations of citizens in their productive age, the potential of the families to provide care to their oldest members is reducing. Therefore, we need to think about securing the needs of the growing population of the dependent seniors. The particular attention should be paid to the housing situation of older dependents who need assistance and support in their daily functioning. The paper sets out to discuss the possibilities of securing the housing needs of seniors with limited independence, based on the currently applicable legal regulations. It presents the examples of good practices in the senior housing industry and information collected during the field research conducted by the Author in 2018 among the dependent seniors in Szczecin.

Adjusting to an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis is a complex process. Caregivers tend to experience feelings of loneliness and isolation, which in turn may have adverse effects on their well-being. Although the detrimental effects of caregiving on psychological and physical health are well documented, more research is needed to give a comprehensive portrait of the caregiving experience, especially in the areas of aloneness and social isolation. Loneliness remains a neglected aspect of the caregiving experience. Results from this study offer important insights into the caregiving experience for psychologists and other healthcare professionals.
