The first part of this paper presents the lateral consonant in the classificatory framework of the International Phonetic Association (IPA). The concept of the lateral approximant is defi ned on the basis of the sound’s articulatory features and its most frequent variants occurring in various languages of the world. In this context, the results of instrumental phonetic research on the Polish lateral are discussed. The remainder of the paper reports on a study of the Polish lateral that was conducted by the authors with the use the electro-magnetic articulograph (EMA), a technique which had never been used before in the description of this Polish sound. The report contains details of the speakers recorded for the purpose of the study, the examined language material, the articulograph, as well as the criteria of articulatory segmentation and analysis. The results of the investigation show that the place of articulation of the Polish lateral was postalveolar in 65.71% and alveolar in 35.29% of the analysed cases. The concluding part of the paper confronts the obtained data with the state of research on the place of articulation of Polish /l/.
The aim of this article is to present the problems of diagnosis, and the possibilities of language programming of a child with profound hearing loss using the auditory-verbal method. Therapeutic procedure refers to the proper development of the child’s speech.
This paper discusses the subject of pronunciation visualization, based on methodologies in experimental phonetics. It presents a brief survey of major Polish instrumental research into articulation, focusing primarily on contemporary dynamic visualizations using electromagnetic articulography. The author’s own investigations were conducted using an AG 500 articulograph, a device which records and visualizes the working and movement of the articulatory organs. Two speakers were recorded: one with standard pronunciation and the other with articulation defects. A multi-specialist team prepared vocal tract models, taking into account the speaker’s anatomical conditions as recorded with the articulograph, video recordings, and photographs. Articulographic data enabled the preparation of pronunciation animations of 45 words, which show the standard realization of all vowels and consonants of Polish, and eight animations of non-standard articulation.
The Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire (TWVQ) is a diagnostic tool designed especially for feminising voice therapy. It complements the objective diagnosis with the patient’s subjective perspective. The therapist receives invaluable feedback about the client’s needs and expectations. The client receives the opportunity to better understand her own approach towards her voice. Originally created in English, the TWVQ required translation into Polish. Translation procedure, followed by adaptation and validation, was conducted in accordance with the rigorous WHO’s guidelines and with transgender patients’ participation. The Polish version of TWVQ was accepted by the co‑author and now is available online free of charge. Polish speech‑language pathologists have received an especially designed tool that may be helpful in voice feminising therapy.

Kwestionariusz Samooceny Głosu dla Transpłciowych Kobiet (Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire – TWVQ) jest narzędziem diagnostycznym stworzonym specjalnie na potrzeby feminizującej terapii głosu. Uzupełnia on obiektywną diagnozę o subiektywne odczucia pacjentki. Terapeuta otrzymuje bezcenne informacje dotyczące jej potrzeb i oczekiwań, a sama pacjentka ma możliwość lepiej uświadomić sobie swój stosunek do własnego głosu. Kwestionariusz – zaprojektowany pierwotnie w języku angielskim – wymagał przełożenia na język polski. Proces tłumaczenia, a później adaptacji i walidacji został przeprowadzony zgodnie z rygorystycznymi wytycznymi Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia, w tym z udziałem transpłciowych pacjentek. Polska wersja TWVQ została zaakceptowana przez współautorkę oryginału i jest za darmo dostępna w internecie. Logopedzi i logopedki w Polsce otrzymali specjalistyczne narzędzie pomocne w terapii transpłciowych pacjentek.
Due to the complex interdisciplinary nature of modern phonetic sciences and the development of individual fi elds of phonetics, it is important to reinterpret some of its crucial aspects. There is still a large collection of phenomena related to the production and perception of speech, which results in the occurrence of certain ambiguous interpretations of phonetic facts and controversies between phonetics and phonology. On their basis, articulatory phonology has been established since the mid-1980s. This proposal, regarding the abstract articulatory gesture with the tools enabling the investigation of articulation as a process (EMA systems), is particularly attractive since it allows a holistic approach to the speech sounds system due to the close relationship between articulation, the image of the speech wave and in particular the mental processes of its reception by the listener. This is important for the phoneticians who teach the pronunciation of individual languages within broadly defi ned glottodidactics, as well as for speech therapists, who are trained in listening skills at the phonetic (speech sounds) level during classes in the so-called auditory training.
This paper presents a new set of exercises in Neuroflow active auditory training designed for people with phonemic hearing disorders and auditory processing disorders of the phonological subtype. These are exercises for the discrimination and identification of the auditory feature of ±voicing within Polish plosive consonants using modification of the acoustic parameter VOT. The modification of VOT length was realised using a digital signal resampling technique.

W artykule zaprezentowano nowy zestaw ćwiczeń w aktywnym treningu słuchowym Neuroflow przeznaczony dla osób z zaburzeniami słuchu fonemowego oraz z zaburzeniami przetwarzania słuchowego o podtypie fonologicznym. Są to ćwiczenia dyskryminacji i identyfikacji słuchowej cechy ±dźwięczności w obrębie polskich spółgłosek zwarto-wybuchowych z wykorzystaniem modyfikacji akustycznego parametru VOT. Modyfikację długości VOT zrealizowano, opierając się na technice przepróbkowania sygnału cyfrowego.
