Researches and cinical reports indicate, that the problem of self-injurious behaviors has increased in the last several years in Poland. Teachers, educators and school counselors have to cope with these self-destructive behaviors more and more frequently. This article provides basic information about prevalence, etiology and functions of self-injuries. Moreover, it presents a comprehensive approach to prevention of these behaviors, which concentrates on coping possibilities and strategies of school staff. There are three levels distinguished in this approach: the institutional level (between different institutions and inside an institution), the level of student-teacher relation, and the personal level of educator. Appendices contain the exemplary procedures provided when working with self-injurious students.
