Globalisation and rapid progress concerning new technologies and IT systems are among the main factors influencing economy in the 21st century. Similar factors also influence multipart supply chains, where there is flow of goods, information and money. As the range of these structures can be considered global, it was advisable to develop a single common business language, i.e. GS1 identifiers. Market is a dynamic environment, where companies need to respond to its needs in a flexible manner in order to maintain one’s position. Nowadays, one of the key aspects is information, which reaches organisations from multiple sources. The problem is to quickly and adequately select necessary data, discard unnecessary information, and make use of the selected data in order to take proper decisions. Considering the above, the purpose of the paper is to analyse the main aspects and role of barcodes, as one of the tools used for automatic identification of goods in contemporary supply chains.
