The article presents the findings of a survey that covered 52 male convicts - students of the Center for Continuing Education at the Correctional Facility in Stargard, a city in northwest Poland. It examined their perception of selected elements of the prison school’s environment. It determined how they described themselves as students and what characteristics and behaviors they ascribed to their teachers. They were also asked to estimate the resocialization value of instruction and suggest possible changes to be made to the school environment. The survey showed that the respondents’ education followed a dubious course. Their main motivating factor for entering education at the prison school was their desire to gain new or additional qualifications as well as to leave the cell. The survey also showed that, first of all, it was a broad knowledge of the subject taught that the students attributed to their teachers. At the same time, they thought their teaching staff lacked the ability to stimulate motivation for change in students. In the respondents’ opinion, instruction turned out to be of moderate significance as compared to other means resocialization value is ascribed to. The students pointed to some deficiencies of the prison school environment. Their correction could translate into increased value of instruction in the prison. The too narrow and obsolete educational offer received the most negative feedback from the students. They had a lot of critical comments about the school’s infrastructure. They were particularly unhappy about school supplies, which they thought were too modest, and the lack of appropriate conditions for intellectual work in the cells.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane aspekty funkcjonowania szkół istniejących przy zakładach karnych w Polsce. Opisano wartości, które czynią nauczanie w tego typu placówkach ważnym środkiem resocjalizacji penitencjarnej. Pokazano dane statystyczne, które ilustrują sytuację szkolnictwa przywięzięnnego w latach szkolnych 2003/04‒2016/17, m.in. liczbę szkół i oddziałów szkolnych, liczbę uczniów i nauczycieli. Zasadniczą część analizy poświęcono opisaniu barier resocjalizacji za pośrednictwem nauczania. Pośród tych ulokowano m.in. niedostatecznie rozwinięte motywacje podjęcia nauki w szkole przywięziennej, nieadekwatną do potrzeb uczniów ofertę kształcenia, braki w wyposażeniu szkół oraz niską frekwencję na zajęciach szkolnych. Analizę przeprowadzono w oparciu o publikowane cyklicznie przez BP CZSW sprawozdania dotyczące wyników dydaktyczno-resocjalizacyjnych uzyskanych przez szkoły funkcjonujące w zakładach karnych

This article will present chosen aspects of already existing inmate education facilities and their functioning in Poland. Merits of such facilities for rehabilitation have been described and statistical data illustrating the situation of prison education in years 2003/04‒2016/17 has been provided. This data includes, among other things, the number of schools and education facilities and the number of students and teachers. An essential part of this article has been dedicated to analyzing the barriers found in rehabilitation when teaching, barriers such as inadequately developed motivations for learning in a inmate education facility, an insufficient education offer for the students, scarce equipment of the aforementioned schools and low attendance rate. The analysis has been based upon the reports concerning the didactic and rehabilitation results of inmate education facilities, which are published periodically by the Polish Penitentiary Bureau and Central Board of Prison Service.
