The aim of this article is to draw attention to the significance of a cultural component in the process of acquiring a foreign language. Presenting and discussing the definitions of cultural competence, the author of this article calls for the permanent inclusion of cultural competence in a foreign language lesson during which it could undergo constant development. Moreover, the author provides various interpretations of the term ‘knowledge of the foreign language’ laying particular emphasis on its colloquial and academic usage.

Culture has been the subject of researchers’ consideration for centuries, which is confirmed by hundreds of published definitions of the word culture. Even a perfunctory analysis of those definitions indicates that it is difficult to talk about culture using it as a consistent concept. The aim of this article is therefore to highlight the richness of meaning of the word culture by presenting and discussing the characteristics of culture which appear most frequently in definitions developed by social psychologists, cultural anthropologists, social pedagogues, foreign language acquisition researchers, and students of German philology. The final part of this articlepresents those features of culture which allow to place this concept correctly in the process of foreign language teaching and learning.

The Polish-German border is perceived as a symbolic border in the post-war Polish-Germanrelations. In this paper, a lot of attention is devoted to this border in the crucial moments of the Polish-German-relations, such as the tense situation in Poland and former East Germany, political changes in 1989 and Poland joining the EU and Schengen Zone. My discussion concerning the symbolism of the Polish-German border is not limited only to the analysis of historical facts and events, but it also centers on the mentality of Germans and Poles, their mutual perception, sympathy and aversion. It turns out that the abolishing of the state borders seems to be much easier than the reduction of the mental barriers/borders existing between Poles and Germans.

This article aims at providing an answer to the question of whether, and if so to what extent (intensive) German language learning and exploring German culture leads to a positive change in the image of Germany and Germans in Poland. The article opens with theoretical considerations on the Us–Them dichotomy, the essential components of self-image and the image of the Other, as well as the interpenetration of the self and otherness. In turn, the empirical part of the article, which is directly related to the theoretical one, is devoted to the analysis of the results of a qualitative study conducted among Polish students of German Philology. The results of the analysis of the students’ utterances show that the exploration of German culture and the improvement of one’s German language proficiency at school and during German studies at university, as well as direct contact with the Germans have resulted in a positive change in the respondents’ attitudes towards Germany, Germans and the German language. The article ends with conclusions along with clearly outlined avenues for further research.

The German language in Poland has a very long tradition dating back to the 18th century. Over the centuries, under the influence of historical, political, economic and social factors, the image of Germany and Germans in Poland as well as the attitude of Poles towards the German language have been subject to continual evolution. The aim of this article is to discuss the position of the German language in Poland, mainly in the 21st century. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of the importance of this language in the Polish educational system in the past two decades, and the changing number of people learning, predominantly in primary and secondary education. Moreover, the reasons for the relatively high level of dislike of the German language among Poles (including learners of German) are presented and analysed. The discussion of the current status of German in our country is preceded by a brief historical outline showing the significance of the German language in Poland as well as the attitude of Poles towards this language over the centuries, beginning with the Old-Polish period

The purpose of the following article is to discuss the theoretical framework of diagnostic research used in glottodidactics as well as to analyze some selected diagnostic studies conducted by Polish and German researchers in the last decade into the development of high school and university students’ and foreign language teachers’ intercultural competence. In the last part of this article attention is paid to the presentation and discussion of the most frequent problems which researchers encounter while planning and carrying out diagnostic studies.

The aim of this article is to present and discuss the results of a questionnaire carried out among secondary school students of German with a view to examining the students’ perception and assessment of the Germans. Analysis of the data provides an answer to the question whether secondary school students of German are able to think critically while assessing others or maybe, on the contrary, are only able to repeat others’ judgements without reflection. The discussion of the results of the questionnaire seems to indicate that, unfortunately, the majority of the secondary school students of German can hardly be regarded as reflective. In the second part of the article, the author puts forward some proposals which may prove important in the process of educating reflective foreign language teachers, and consequently, reflective students.

The article presents and discusses the results of a questionnaire conducted among third-year undergraduate students and second-year graduate students of German Philology at the University of Rzeszów taking the specialization in the teaching of German. The aim of the questionnaire was to draw attention to and assess the current state of the students’ preparation for work in the teaching profession. Analysis of the results reveals to what extent the programme of studies in the Department of German Philology, particularly within the teaching specialization, fulfils the students’ expectations. In addition, the respondents’ proposals concerning how the quality of teacher education in the Department of Ger-man Philology could be improved are presented and discussed by the author.

The purpose of this article is to present and discuss the causes and ways of forming prejudices in contemporary societies. I examine consecutively the impact of family, education, workplace and the media on the formation of prejudices, paying special attention to the last dimension. In the empirical section of this article, I analyse ‘the image of Poles’ as depicted in selected German newspapers from 1989 and 2004, and I attempt to find out whether this image changes over time.

This article intends to contribute to the academic debate on the role of a foreign language teacher as an intercultural mediator. Specifically, the authors present a critical overview of constitutive characteristics of an intercultural mediator. Furthermore, the authors discuss research on the state of intercultural competence of Polish teachers of German as a foreign language, both in pre-school education and in primary, secondary and higher education in Poland. This reflection on the role of teachers as (inter)cultural mediators concludes with a discussion of proposals for the development of intercultural competence of foreign language students, especially of students of German philology and applied linguistics.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przyczynienie się do debaty naukowej na temat roli nauczyciela języków obcych jako mediatora interkulturowego. Autorki charakteryzują sylwetkę nauczyciela języka obcego pełniącego funkcję mediatora interkulturowego. Ponadto podsumowują badania polskich germanistów, które dotyczą stanu kompetencji interkulturowej nauczycieli języka niemieckiego w edukacji przedszkolnej oraz w szkolnictwie podstawowym, średnim i wyższym w Polsce. Refleksję nad rolą nauczycieli jako mediatorów interkulturowych kończy dyskusja nad możliwymi rozwiązaniami w zakresie rozwoju kompetencji międzykulturowych studentów języków obcych, zwłaszcza studentów filologii germańskiej i lingwistyki stosowanej.

The aim of this article is to present the profile of a ‘good’ foreign language teacher,which has been created on the basis of the comments made by about 230 students of modern languages at Polish institutions of higher education (colleges and universities) in two voivodeships of Poland, namely Podkarpackie Voivodeship and Wielkopolska Voivodeship. In this image, teacher personality traits, the majority of which are regarded as values not only in professional life (e.g. in the teaching profession), but also in personal life, have ranked the highest. Personality traits have overshadowed the other two groups of qualities, which foreign language teachers are also equipped with, i.e. didactic and glottodidactic ones. This study is part of a larger research project covering all types of schools in Poland (from primary schools, through middle and secondary schools, to colleges and universities)
