Africa is considered often as a victim of the globalization processes that make the world more unjust: the division between the rich and the poor is getting wider, and Africa is still the poorest continent on the planet. It is not only an effect of the colonization era, but also of the new colonization in the economic field and in the communication sphere. Globalization of the media and communication make the people from around the world more easily and rapidly connected, but also create enormous disproportions in the communication and media flows. Big telegraph companies from Great Britain and other Western countries built in the 19th century telegraphic systems in different continents (finally also in Africa), the biggest media holdings have headquarters in the USA, European Union or Japan, and the Internet is popular, above all, in the rich North, while in the poor South it is still a luxury. The image of Africa in the Western world is still, however, biased with stereotypes, creating an „afro-pessimism": Africa is perceived as a continent of disasters, famine, ethnic wars, AIDS and malaria. This is an effect of the domination of the Western media (that show such Africa) in the communication field. Nevertheless, in Africa every year there are more and more Internet users, and the Western values of freedom of expression are disseminated among Africans more dynamically. In this sense, Africa is a beneficiary of the Western hegemony and should take an opportunity to develop and create a new vision of this continent in the world. Without changing the image, it seems impossible to challenge the African poverty.

Considering that the beginning of the 21st century saw the emergence of a third meaning of the word “to communicate” – to negotiate, the author sets out to explore the challenges it supposes in today’s dangerous, multipolar world, where the respect for alterity and the construction of cohabitation have become the keys of peace and war. The author concludes that the political challenge of communication in the 21st century will be to enable the peaceful cohabitation of the same and the different in open societies, where economy will no longer be the only horizon of human beings.

This article asserts the urgent need of discernment in our hyper-connected and hyperaccelerated society, which drives people to frenetic activity and constant hurry. Besides, „the speed with which information is communicated exceeds our capacity for reflection and judgement”. The first part of the article focuses on discernment and indicates some of its characteristics. The second part reflects on how to practice it in order to meet the ethical challenges of our digital culture.

This paper studies the cooperation of theology in the new evangelization in societies of ancient Christian tradition which are suffering an advanced process of secularization. It begins with Spain, where a recent debate on the influence of Christian intellectuals on social life suggests the ineffectiveness of ecclesiastical resources in transmitting the rich Catholic doctrinal heritage. Then the author deals with the idiosyncrasy of contemporary man, which lies near the one of the immediate future’s man: an uprooted subject who does not believe that life has any meaning, is deeply marked by emotivism and attaches little significance to truth. The theology of tomorrow cannot feed this emotivism but must be proactive in its own way. The proclamation of the Gospel is not different from the exposition of the Church’s doctrine. To detach evangelization from the teaching of Christian doctrine cannot help the encounter with Christ. In order to succeed in transmitting this doctrine by making it suggestive, theologians should work together with experts in communication.

This study aims to determine the effect of the level of knowledge and perceptions and inter-personal communication of adolescents on violent behavior in dating relation-ships. This research uses quantitative research methods with a population of adoles-cents aged 15 to 20 years in Petukanangan Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta with a quota sample of 200 respondents. This study also uses theories and concepts related to adolescent perceptions, knowledge, interpersonal communication, and behavior. The results of this study found that there is an influence of knowledge variables, Interper-sonal Communication Variables and Perception Variables on violent behavior in courtship relationships, although linearity does not mean that if knowledge is high about values and norms then violence on dating relationships will be low, if interper-sonal communication is high then violent behavior low, but if perceptions are high then violent behavior is also high meaning personal and situational perceptions influ-ence violent behavior in dating relationships. Perception, Knowledge, Communication, Dating Violence (KDP), Teenagers Niniejsze badanie ma na celu określenie wpływu poziomu wiedzy i spostrzeżeń oraz komunikacji międzyludzkiej nastolatków na gwałtowne zachowania w związkach randkowych. W badaniach wykorzystano metody badań ilościowych z populacją nastolatków w wieku od 15 do 20 lat w Petukangan Kebayoran Lama, Dżakarta Południowa, z próbą kwotową 200 respondentów. W badaniu wykorzystano również teorie i pojęcia związane z percepcją nastolatków, wiedzą, komunikacją interpersonalną i zachowaniem. Wyniki tego badania wykazały, że wpływ zmiennych wiedzy, interpersonalnych zmiennych komunikacyjnych i zmiennych percepcyjnych na zachowanie agresywne w stosunkach zalotów jest liniowy, chociaż liniowość nie oznacza, że jeśli wiedza o wartościach i normach jest duża, to przemoc w relacjach randkowych będzie niska , jeśli komunikacja interpersonalna jest wysoka, wówczas zachowania związane z przemocą są niskie, ale jeśli percepcja jest wysoka, wówczas zachowania agresywne są również wysokie, co oznacza, że osobiste i sytuacyjne postrzeganie wpływają na zachowanie agresywne w relacjach randkowych. The paper investigates the ways in which Czech secondary school pupils participate in power negotiating which takes place in the classroom between them and their teachers. The paper draws on a qualitative study of 32 video recorded classes in order to illustrate which behavioural alteration techniques (active resistance strategies carried out through communication)pupils choose to apply in order to influence the teacher’s behaviour and how. The paper also illuminates the broader context in which the said techniques were applied and what influences the outcomes of such actions.

This paper deals with digital literacy, which helps develop generation Y’s skills and competencies. The aim of this paper is, based on a questionnaire survey, to obtain information on the digital literacy of Generation Y in the Trenčín region (Slovak Republic) and the Zlín region (Czech Republic) and whether these regions help to increase Generation Y´s digital competences. Also, analyse and compare specific survey results in each region and, based on the obtained data, prepare recommendations that would be generally applicable not only for the selected regions from the survey but also for other regions. Before starting our marketing research, we set research questions and hypotheses, which we justify and statistically verify in this article’s empirical part. Based on our findings, there is no statistically significant relationship between sex and learning new digital media of Generation Y. According to our findings, Generation Y is interested in learning about digital media, but none of the regions studied offers sufficient development opportunities.

Stanislaw Lem is one of the most famous figures of the Polish science fiction in post-world war two Europe. Solaris. His most famous novel, was published in 1961, and was adapted twice for the big screen, first in 1971 by Andrej Tarkovski, and in 2002 by Steven Soderbergh. The plot revolves around the psychologist Kris Kelvin, who is sent on the planet Solaris to try to find out if it is possible to communicate with the alien ocean that covers almost all of its surface. Confronted with a strange phenomenon and colleagues turned paranoid, Kelvin tries at first to understand what is going on at the space station. The unexplained arrival of the döppleganger of his ex-partner, Harey, will little by little make him accept the absurdity of his task and possibly of life itself. As Lem himself refused any final interpretation of his novel, there has of course been a flourish of them. One can however choose this exegetic impossibility as a major theme in the novel, and reflect on the implications of the situation Kelvin faces, caught between a desire to understand the nature of Solaris’s ocean and the sheer failure of doing so. In this essay, we will try to suggest that, by showing the limits of language as the means to express a satisfying epistemic frame, Lem’s parabol could be seen as an attempt to show the reader the existential limits of our anthropocentrism and scientific hubris.

Understanding the role of communication promoted by Ibero-American society during the Coronavirus pandemic is fundamental for building knowledge about the disease. In this scenario, Instagram occupies a privileged place, as it carries a diversity of possible languages. Furthermore, Instagram’s relevance in the social media landscape is growing. This article presents, from a study developed through big data analysis procedures, the first result of several that make up an international investigation on the subject. In the project stage, the quantitative volume of publications, the average publication per user and the participation of the different languages used in this analysis group were verified. It is hoped that further investigations can be developed based on the results presented here, especially due to the urgency of knowing the role of communication in the pandemic scenario in which we live.

Abstract This paper examines the influence and power of language in education in Nigeria from the precolonial to colonial and post-colonial times. This is with regards to the effect of language on gender issues within the country. Nigeria, a country on the west coast of Africa is multi-ethnic with over 150 (one hundred and fifty) ethnic groups with their different indigenous languages and cultures. As a colony of the British, the Christian missionaries who first introduced western form of education in Nigeria used the British English language as a medium of communication and subsequently with the establishment of colonial administration in the country, English language was made the official language of the country. This paper contains a critical analysis of the use of English Language in the country and its implications on communication in social and economic interactions of individuals within the various communities across the country.  It argues that the proliferation of the English language was through education of which the male gender benefitted more than their female counterparts due to the patriarchal dominance in the country. The data for the study was collated from random interviews and other written sources. The research discovered that the knowledge and ability to speak fluently and write the English language had a direct influence on the socio-political and economic status of individuals within the country. The women who benefitted from this were comparatively fewer than the men due to some prevailing conditions of what could be called in the present the subjugation of women the society. Critical discourse analysis is adopted for this study. It argues that English language dependency by Nigerians shows that forms of the colonial experience is still evident and these were all initiated during the past interactions with west through the transatlantic slave trade and colonial rule. This is because discourse as a social construct is created and perpetuated by the persons who have the language power and means of communication. The Nigerian family being of a conservative orientation derives its power directly from the father who is the patriarch of the family as obtained in the traditional set up of communities and the Nigerian society in general. First impressions can influence the attitude and course of treatment as in positive as well as negative sense. Therefore, it is important that nurse to know correct communicate with the depressed patients. During duty nurse frequent patient contact and follow-up interview him. Depression deprives a person of joy from anything, especially from life. The causes of depression are not known to this day we know only the biological processes in the brain and the factors that may contribute to developing depression. Sadness, lack of interest, indecisiveness, hopelessness, slowed speech and voice in which feel permanent affliction, talking about leaving the life and sometimes even suicide attempts these are the most common symptoms of depressive people. Able to communicate properly with depressed patients is very difficult for nurses. During communication with depressed patients it should speak in a calm and persuasive voice, slowly and clearly. Depressed patients are extremely sensitive to their health and any comment on his health condition. It is necessary to consider every word.

The thesis I put forward in my article is that of an essential role of blogs as an incredibly efficient communication platform in the times of media convergence. This communication tool plays a particularly important role in PR activities of a university - a tool with the help of which functions of a university can be realized as well as those which are realized by the highest level of PR development - in 2-way symmetrical model of Hunt and Grunig. I prove my thesis by analyzing recent literature on the subject, websites of state universities in Poland, and functioning of blogs at the Faculty of Management and Economics at Gdansk University of Technology. Wobec wyrównanych możliwości technologicznych organizacje nie ustają w poszukiwaniu gwarantu dającego przewagę na rynku, sięgając do różnych koncepcji. Jedną z nich jest popularna ostatnio koncepcja CSR, z którą wiąże się istotny, aczkolwiek trudny do uchwycenia zasób niematerialny organizacji – zaufanie. W artykule przyjęto założenie, że utrudnienia w budowaniu zaufania pomiędzy organizacją a jej interesariuszami są wynikiem braku lub nieskuteczności komunikatów wysyłanych przez organizację na temat jej praktyk społecznie odpowiedzialnych. Celem artykułu jest podkreślenie znaczenia zaufania budowanego w oparciu o działania społecznie odpowiedzialne organizacji oraz wskazanie luki w komunikowaniu tych działań. Do realizacji tego celu wykorzystano analizę literatury, przegląd i analizę badań dotyczących komunikowania CSR i wiedzy na ten temat oraz wyniki sondażu diagnostycznego przeprowadzonego wśród wybranej grupy studentów Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej. Obszar rozważań zawężono do relacji organizacja-klient.

CEL/TEZA: Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie koncepcji Unified Modeling Language (UML) oraz możliwości jego użycia w dziedzinie bibliologii i informatologii. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Na podstawie analizy piśmiennictwa omówiony został proces kształtowania się języków graficznych oraz ich zalety związane z zapewnieniem zwięzłości i precyzji komunikacji. Analiza przypadku kategoryzacji wydawnictw wykorzystana została do zademonstrowania zasad modelowania pojęć z dziedziny bibliologii i informatologii za pomocą języka UML. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Przedstawiony przykład modelowania za pomocą UML pojęć z zakresu bibliologii i informatologii pokazuje przydatność tego języka w opracowywaniu nowych metod i narzędzi dla bibliotekarstwa i usług informacyjnych. ORYGINALNOŚĆ/WARTOŚĆ POZNAWCZA: Chociaż UML jest narzędziem szeroko stosowanym w wielu dziedzinach, w piśmiennictwie nauki o informacji nie analizowano dotychczas jego przydatności do modelowania narzędzi i usług informacyjnych.

PURPOSE/THESIS: The aim of the paper is to present the concept of Unified Modeling Language and discuss the possibilities of its application in the field of book and information sciences. APPROACH/METHODS: Based on the analysis of literature, the process of graphical languages development and their advantages related to the coherence and precision of communication are discussed. The case study of the categorization of publication forms is used to demonstrate the use of UML in modeling terms from the field of book and information sciences. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The presented example shows usefulness of UML for the development of new methods and tools in library and information services. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Although UML is a tool widely used in many fields, the literature on information science has not analyzed yet its suitability for modeling of information tools and services.

The article tackles the problem of models of communication in science. The formal division of communication processes into oral and written does not resolve the problem of attitude. The author defines successful communication as a win-win game, based on the respect and equality of the partners, regardless of their position in the world of science. The core characteristics of the process of scientific communication are indicated , such as openness, fairness, support, and creation. The task of creating the right atmosphere for science communication belongs to moderators, who should not allow privilege and differentiation of position to affect scientific communication processes.

Zaletą nowych technik komunikacji, zwłaszcza przekazywanych za pomocą Internetu, jest dostępność, powszechność, interaktywność. Wadą jest przede wszystkim nierówność dostępu do informacji. Internet to sieć, fizyczna infrastruktura, dzięki której są dostępne usługi, takie jak WWW, poczta elektroniczna, FTP. W artykule opisano metody komunikacji marketingowej i przedstawiono wyniki badania ankietowego na temat źródeł informacji oraz dostrzegalności działań promocyjnych zakładów ubezpieczeń.

The intensive development of modern information technology makes the fragmentation in traditional media and the emergence of the new ways of communications. Advantage of the new communication techniques, especially, these forwarded by the Internet is availability, generality and interactivity. The mainly disadvantage is inequality of access to information. Internet is a network, a physical infrastructure, thanks to the fact that services such as WWW, e-mail and FTP are available. This article describes the ways of marketing communication, shows the results of marketing research about sources of information and visibility of promotional activities of insurances.

Współczesny e-konsument odgrywający determinantywną rolę w procesach zakupowych gospodarstw domowych jest coraz młodszy. Dziś dzieci i młodzież coraz częściej decydują o zakupie zarówno dóbr pierwszej potrzeby, jak i dóbr trwałego użytku. Młode pokolenie to tubylcy internetowi, którym nie obce są nowoczesne technologie. Korzystanie z nich w celu poszukiwania informacji, komunikowania się i dokonywania zakupów jest coraz częstsze. To przyczynia się do zmian form, metod i technik komunikacyjnych stosowanych przez przedsiębiorstwa. Zasadniczą kwestią poruszaną w artykule będzie prezentacja młodego e-konsumenta w dobie wirtualizacji rzeczywistości XXI w.

Modern e-consumer who plays key role in purchasing decisions processes is getting younger. Today the children and young people are increasingly making decisions about purchasing of fast moving consumer goods and durables as well. The young generation are “natives to the Internet” and are natively familiar with modern technologies. Using Internet and information technologies for shopping become more frequent. And it force enterprises to change forms, methods and techniques of communication they use towards e-consumers. The fundamental issue addressed in this paper is to present young e-consumer in the twenty-first century virtualization era.

The article takes a closer look at Pope Benedict XVI’s message on the media, while setting the Holy Father’s ideas in the general context of media theory. It focuses on key themes emerging from the papal messages: (1) the role of the media in communication and community, (2) the relationship between the media and education, (3) the polarity of silence and word. Starting with the above-mentioned points, it then freely moves on to the question of defining the function and task of the media. The at least partially formed answers to the definitions then meet in the article with reflections on the actual activity of the media in the world. It does not present a comprehensive solution to the conflict between the defined and the actual, nor is it its goal. The ambition of the conclusion is instead an attempt at indicating possible ways of further development of the media space.

The article presents the results of research conducted among people with sight and hearing dysfunctions in the region of Upper Silesia. The research comprised issues related to the use of electronic devices and electronic communication technologies by the handicapped and their functioning in the public space. The research was conducted with the use of a questionnaire and in-depth interviews. The questioned were the representatives of Silesian branches of the Polish Association of the Deaf and Polish Association of the Blind.

The purpose of this article is to present the results of the cyclic international research project European Communication Monitor (ECM), the essence of which is to identify the changes and developments in public relations in Europe. Compared to the previous edition in 2012, the area of research has been significantly modified and expanded. Novelty were questions relating to ethical challenges in communication. ECM recent study indicates the current position and future direction of strategic communication in Europe.
