The paper focuses on the documentary aspect of a letter as a speech genre. The corpus comprises the letters exchanged between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz, written between 1966 and 1985. The study aims toanalyse how the participants of the epistolary dialogue present historic and social issues, and to what extent a private letter may serve memory. The analysis proves that the topics in the texts revolve around every day and ordinary issues – important only for the correspondents. Historical facts and social affairs are reported selectively, always from the sender’s point of view, and in relation to the addressee and the circumstances. They are often expressed in a disguised form (by means of allusion, understatement, joke, irony) which is determined by two factors: the fear of censorship and the correspondents’ literary abilities and their similar personality traits. The data reveals that a letter – considered as one’s account of events and a secondary mnemonic genre – may serve memory onlyin some ways but not completely because it “remembers” the past in a relative and limited way.

The subject of the article is the problem of communication between a human and a non-human animal, analyzed in the context of animal studies against the background of a diverse literary tradition. The article analyzes two literary acts of trans-species communication that are poles apart in the texts Report to the Academy by Franz Kafka (1917) and The Final Scene by Kornel Filipowicz (1977). The monologue of the civilized chimpanzee as well as the refusal of the gorillas to remain silent, mark the extent to which animal protagonists respond to the oppression of objectifying assimilation in the stories under discussion. Both fictions, through the literary strategies adopted, compromise the human being and the human-centric perspective in the face of insurmountable (or seemingly defeated) otherness.

Tematem artykułu jest problem porozumiewania się człowieka ze zwierzęciem innym niż człowiek, rozważany w kontekście animal studies na tle zróżnicowanej tradycji literackiej. Autor analizuje dwa literackie, biegunowo usytuowane, akty transgatunkowej komunikacji: Sprawozdanie dla Akademii Franza Kafki (1917) oraz Scenę końcową Kornela Filipowicza (1977). Monolog cywilizowanego szympansa lub odmowne milczenie goryli wyznaczają w omawianych opowiadaniach zakres reagowania zwierzęcych bohaterów na opresję uprzedmiotawiającej asymilacji. Obie fikcje za sprawą przyjętych strategii literackich kompromitują człowieka i humanocentryczną perspektywę w obliczu nieprzezwyciężonej (lub pozornie przezwyciężonej) inności.

Based on selected works by Kornel Filipowicz, the article presents the writer’s reflection on the absurdity of the world in relation to Albert Camus’s literary and philosophical concept. The article has been divided into ve entitled parts, of which the rst one is an introduction to the article, and the last one is its conclusion. In Disintegration of the World two short stories by Filipowicz are presented, in which the theme of absurdity appears. According to the article’s author, they can refer to the idea of absurdity by Albert Camus. The part: Mapping the absurd uses the examples of Camus’s essays and Filipowicz’s stories to outline the ontic status of the absurd that both writers give. The next subsection, Two Sides of the Same, juxtaposes the reflections contained in one of Filipowicz’s short stories and Camus’s early parable, directing attention to both thinkers’ understanding of the idea of the absurd. In the Blind Men, the context of Pieter Bruegel’s painting „The Blind Leading the Blind” additionally appears in order to emphasise Filipowicz’s reflection on the existence of two opposing epiphanies in the world at the same time – absurdity and sense. The article closes Doxographical landscape with absurdity in the background. According to the author’s findings, the absurd in Filipowicz’s work appears in the doxographical impressions of his characters and is an expression of the subjectivity of human experience.

The notion of epistolary discourse is understood in this paper as a communicative event reflected in the letter or other varieties of this genre in a specific sender and receiver model. The article presents some features of epistolary discourse with reference to the correspondence between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz. In the first part of the study, the author situates private letters in the discursive reality and introduces the participants of such kind of correspondence. Then, the interactive aspect of epistolary discourse is examined, specifically inner and outer dialogue. After that, the elements of direct dialogue are discussed, e.g. forms of address, forms of metatext and linguistic equivalents of gestures. From the data, it can be assumed that the letters in question contain the typical features of epistolary discourse. However, original and unconventional elements seem to be part of the letters as well (e.g. employing fictitious characters in the correspondence, creating collages, linguistic stylizations, etc.).

Szwajcaria jest często utożsamiana z idyllą, miejscem na ziemi, za którym się tęskni. Jednak po dokładniejszej analizie szwajcarskich fenomenów i ich odzwierciedlenia w literaturze można znaleźć dzieci, które tęsknią za miłością swoich rodziców, kobiety, które tęsknią za uznaniem społecznym i równością, a nawet polskich internowanych z czasu II wojny światowej tęskniących za ojczyzną, choć nie była ona sielanką. Artykuł ukazuje tęsknotę polskich internowanych z perspektywy szwajcarskiej pisarki i polskiego autora. Analizie poddano dwa teksty literackie: powieść Das Freudenkind Kathariny Zimmermann (2003) oraz tekst Kornela Filipowicza Jeniec i dziewczyna (1965). Omówiono sposób, w jaki autorka i autor przedstawiają tęsknotę Polaków mieszkających w Szwajcarii za ojczyzną w kon-frontacji ze szwajcarską sielanką oraz wpływ odczuwanej tęsknoty na zachowanie bohaterów.

Switzerland is often equated with an idyll, with a place on earth that one longs for. But after a more detailed analysis of the Swiss situation and its reflection in literature, one finds children who yearn for love from their parents, women who yearn for social recognition and equality and even Polish internees from the Second World War who long for their homeland, although it was no idyll. The article shows the longing of the Polish internees from the perspective of a Swiss writer and a Polish author. Two literary texts are examined: Katharina Zimmermann's novel Das Freudenkind (2003) and the text by Kornel Filipowicz Jeniec i dziewczyna (1965). I analyse the ways in which the two authors present the longing of Poles living in Switzerland for their home-land in confrontation with the Swiss idyll and how this longing influences the behavior of the protagonists.

Oft wird die Schweiz mit einer Idylle gleichgesetzt, mit einem Ort auf Erden, nach dem man sich sehnt. Doch nach einer genaueren Analyse der Schweizer Verhältnisse und deren Widerspiegelung in der Literatur findet man Kinder, die sich nach Liebe der Eltern seh-nen, Frauen, die sich nach gesellschaftlicher Anerkennung und Gleichberechtigung sehnen und sogar polnische Internierte aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs, die sich nach ihrer Hei-mat sehnen, obwohl sie keine Idylle war.In dem Beitrag wird die Sehnsucht der polnischen Internierten aus der Perspektive einer Schweizer Schriftstellerin und eines polnischen Autors gezeigt. Betrachtet werden zwei literarische Texte: Katharina Zimmermanns Roman Das Freudenkind (2003) und der Text von Kornel Filipowicz Jeniec i dziewczyna (1965). Analysiert wird, wie die beiden AutorInnen die Sehnsucht der in der Schweiz lebenden Polen nach ihrer Heimat in Konfrontation mit der Schweizer Idylle präsentieren und wie jene Sehnsucht das Verhalten der ProtagonistInnen beeinflusst.

Kornel Filipowicz – one of the most outstanding Polish artists of the 20th century – is still one of the little-known authors. His name appears most o¡en in the context of Wisława Szymborska. The poet, together with the writer’s sons Aleksander and Marcin, as well as a group of researchers and friendly writers, she took care to popularize his work. In 2019, the translation of Filipowicz’s he Memoir of an Anti-Hero appeared on the English-speaking publishing market (Penguin Modern Classics). This event contributed to the analysis of Krakow based writer’s work in terms of the links between literature and philosophy. The article refers to the category of „machines for thinking” through which an attempt is made to read Filipowicz’s work in a methodological model that produces philosophical meanings. In this regard, two references to contemporary understandings of cultural and social spaces are particularly mentioned – the disciplinary machine of Michel Foucault and the anthropological machine of Giorgio Agamben.

The paper discusses the benefits of conceptualizing correspondence as an interpoetic medium. It presents an analysis of textual and visual ways of constructing the presence of the addressee and the sender in letters, and the disruption of constructing this presence caused by interrupting the writing process by a phone call. The paper indicates the fictionalizing role of the addressee and the sender as the condition for creating the “virtual reality” of a letter. It presents basic figures and topoi for acknowledging the presence in correspondence based on the collections of correspondence between: Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz, Maria Pawlikowka-Jasnorzewska and Stefan Jasnorzewski, Stanisław Barańczak and Lech Dymarski, and Zofia and Kazimierz Moczarscy.

Analizuje tekstowe i wizualne sposoby uobecniania adresata i nadawcy w listach oraz ich zakłócenia powodowane przerwaniem pisania listu przez rozmowę telefoniczną. Wskazuje na rolę fikcjonalizacji odbiorcy i nadawcy jako warunku wytworzenia „wirtualnej rzeczywistości” listu. Przedstawia podstawowe figury i toposy uobecniania w korespondencji na podstawie zbiorów korespondencji: Wisławy Szymborskiej i Kornela Filipowicza, Marii Pawlikowskiej-Jasnorzewskiej i Stefana Jasnorzewskiego, Stanisława Barańczaka i Lecha Dymarskiego oraz Zofii i Kazimierza Moczarskich.

But at the same time Różewicz’s movie has become an artistic event showing the drama of frauders’ victims – people struggling with pain, loneliness and lack of hope. Formation of concept of The voice from the other world and the analysis of its following realization’s stages are the attempt to describe the essence of Stanisław Różewicz’s unique style and his sensitivity as a director.
