According to the view expressed in the opinion, currently Taiwan cannot be a party to an international agreement within the meaning of the existing Act on International Agreements of 2002. The conclusion of an agreement between the trade offices of both parties, which would be of private-law character, and which then would have influence on tax regulations in Poland and Taiwan, would have to result in changes in domestic statutory legislation. It is the only acceptable solution.

Peaceful rapprochement between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China observed throughout the first and most of the second term of Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou have been founded on two pillars: deepening economic cooperation and high level diplomacy. The strategy was pursued predominantly in the public dimension with apparent intention to limit popular involvement in the complex negotiations, but this political practice has reached its limits. Recent political, social and economic developments in Taiwan, as reflected in the Sunflower Movement, have shown that democratic changes in the Island are too significant to be ignored in high level diplomacy and economic integration scenarios. It is time to add another actor to the cross-strait equation: Taiwanese society with its political expectations, fears and ambitions. This might exert an impact not only on the 2016 parliamentary and presidential elections in Taiwan, but also on future relations with the PRC.

This paper attempt to define and classify Taiwanese drama in terms of its genre, origin, audience, structure and meaning, placing the phenomenon in broader cultural and historical context. The main textual study subject here is reduced to idol drama and some prime-time drama (except history drama) representing main types of lianxuju. Taiwanese drama as a form of imaginary reality embodies several characteristics of a fairy tale, which are recreated and rewritten. Narrative paradigm of lianxuju related to (fairy) tale is universal, whereas its syntagmatic code is regional (Taiwanese). Articulating tension between Confucian virtues and the modern values of individual emancipation Taiwanese drama reflect at the syntagmatic level mixture of old and new ideologies.

The modern phenomenon of Taiwanese Zuo Yuezi has exceptional features, such as a Chinese Medicinal system background and recent commercialization. After its millennia-lasting history, we may wonder, what is the modern shape of this tradition, and how it impacts on modern life. The purpose of this research is to describe the Taiwan Chinese medical Gynecologists’ attitude towards Zuo Yuezi tradition, and to describe contemporary Zuo Yuezi through their practical knowledge and experience. Questionnaires have been used as a tool in this survey consisting of and including information such as respondents’ attitudes to 68 elements of Zuo Yuezi and its assignment to four different categories of consideration. Results showed that: 1) Zuo Yuezi is considered as very important as contributing to the postpartum mother’s health. 2) Transitions in Zuo Yuezi manner include: resignation from the traditional restrictions concerning hygiene, like body and hair washing, preferences for the commercial locations and services of Zuo Yuezi Centers for postpartum rest, and a shifting in family members’ ways of participation in Zuo Yuezi. 3) The impact of western medical education on respondents’ attitudes is clearly visible.

The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) was the first professional sports league ever created in Taiwan, but has been plagued by a series of match-fixing scandals starting from 1996. However, the 2009 scandal happened to the most popular club, Brother Elephants. The corrupt “Windshield Wiper” ring was the mastermind behind whole affair. Twenty-six former and active players and coaches were involved that put the games’ ethics and integrity in jeopardy. In particular, star players such as Cao Jinhui and Chen Zhiyuan were banished from baseball forever, which certainly shocked the public. Accordingly, the CPBL was again on the verge of disbandment. Facing such a crisis, fans organized a street protest and spontaneously demanded that the government take actions against such an adverse environment. Subsequently, the authorities stipulated several plans in order to revive the “national sport” people used to love.

In the past, traditional Buddhism in China focused on chanting and meditation that detached itself from the society. However, after generations of strenuous efforts to promote ‘Humanistic Buddhism’, several Masters have been encouraging religion to engage more in daily lives. One of the proponents was Master Hsin Yun, who was born and raised in mainland China and subsequently moved to Taiwan along with the ‘Monk Rescue Team’. It was in Taiwan that Master Hsin Yun founded Fo Guang Shan, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites on the island. At the beginning, he started the place from scratch, setting up basketball courts for the followers to take part in basketball games. Upholding the notion that Buddhism needs to engage the public, Master, therefore, has a unique way of combing religion with modern sports in an attempt to let more people get in touch with religion. Accordingly, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, and other sports were promoted and sponsored under the auspices of Fo Guang Shan, which certainly topples public stereotypes around sedentary Buddhism. In the end, Master hopes that, in the future, sports can unite healthy Fo Guang followers worldwide and bring honor to Taiwan.

This study examined Taiwanese undergraduates’ trajectories of emotional well-being, positive affect, and negative affect over a 16-week period within one semester. The effect of their differences in gender and time perspective profiles on intraindividual variability of weekly affect and associations between time trends of affects and use of two emotional regulation strategies, i.e., reappraisal and suppression, were also investigated. Longitudinal data from 96 undergraduates were analyzed by hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). With time passing, the habitual use of reappraisal was related to the increase of emotional well-being and positive affect and related to the decline of negative affect. By contrast, habitually using suppression was related to an increase of negative affect over time. The main findings also indicated that individuals with balanced time perspective had higher levels of emotional well-being compared to those without balanced time perspective at the baseline of the study. Gender and time perspective profiles were also demonstrated as moderators in the relationship between changes in using emotional regulation strategies on emotional well-being.

Background: Low back pain is a common health problem among hospital nurses. However, the prevalence, characteristics, and work-related risk factors of low back pain have not been widely investigated in Taiwan. Materials and Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey of 217 hospital nurses to gather self-reported information on the prevalence of back pain, demographic and pain characteristics, and work-related risk factors from 178 respondents who indicated a past history of back pain. The association between the characteristics of back pain and work-related risk factors was also examined. Results: The lifetime prevalence of back pain was 82.03%, and the point prevalence of back pain was 43.78%. The mean pain score is 41.67. The number of years at work was significantly associated with the pain score for an individual’s most recent episode of back pain, the extent of bothersomeness of back pain and leg pain, and the extent to which back pain interfered with normal work. Conclusion: Back pain is common among hospital nurses in Taiwan. Years at work are significantly associated with pain severity and disability caused by back pain.

Taiwan’s limited participation in international organizations and institutions depends heavily on its unique, but troublesome position in the world. It results from the fact that in 1949, the Nationalist Party authorities of the Republic of China were established on Taiwan, after the lost war on the continent. Meanwhile, the victorious Communist Party established the People’s Republic of China in the mainland. Throughout the course of the history of divided China, both governments competed for the representation of China in international organizations, however Taiwan’s international presence was largely limited. For example, in 2015 Taiwan participated in 37 international organizations, in addition to the observer’s status in 21 other, most of them of a regional range. It resulted from the development of some alternative strategies, markedly exemplified by Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Belly dance has become one of the most popular dances in Taiwan today, with women of various ages participating in this imported dance. With respect to this speedy expansion, the purpose of this study is to investigate current developments, and to distinguish features of Taiwanese belly dance. The method adopted is literature analysis: a large number of Internet news items were collected to capture the trend of belly dancing in Taiwan. This study concludes that belly dance in Taiwan is primarily presented as: an exercise that is beneficial for health; widely accessible and partially embedded in local life; an exercise for all age groups and genders; a blend of multiple cultural elements; outstanding dancers acclaimed as the pride of Taiwan. The representation showed that the development of belly dance was influenced by the Taiwanese social background. Within the Taiwanese cultural landscape of meanings, belly dance moves between the exotic and the local. This study argues that belly dance is better described as "localised-exoticism" in Taiwan.

Shakespeare studies in Mainland China and Taiwan evolved from the same origin during the two centuries after Shakespeare being introduced into China in the early nineteenth century. Although Shakespeare was first seen on the Taiwan stage in the Japanese language during the colonial period, it was after Kuomintang moved to Taiwan in 1949 that Shakespeare studies began to flourish when scholars and theatrical experts from mainland China, such as Liang Shih-Chiu, Yu Er-Chang, Wang Sheng-shan and others brought Chinese Shakespeare to Taiwan. Since the 1980s, mainland Shakespeareans began to communicate actively with their colleagues in Taiwan. With the continuous efforts of Cao Yu, Fang Ping, Meng Xianqiang, Gu Zhengkun, Yang Lingui and many other scholars in mainland China and Chu Li-Min, Yen Yuan-shu, Perng Ching-Hsi and other scholars in Taiwan, communications and conversations on Shakespeare studies across the Taiwan Strait were gradually enhanced in recent years. Meanwhile, innovations in Chinese adaptations of Shakespeare have resulted in a new performing medium, Shake-xiqu, through which theatrical practitioners on both sides explore possibilities of a union of Shakespeare and traditional Chinese theatre. This paper studies some intricate relationship in the history of Shakespeare studies in mainland China and Taiwan from a developmental perspective and suggests opportunities for positive and effective co-operations and interactions in the future.

Competition law recognizes two principal models of regulating the concentration of economic power, namely the American and European models. The American model prevailed, or rather was enforced, in the course of reception of the Western anti-monopoly law in the Far East. On the other hand, the European model was adopted in China – both the mainland and Taiwan – and in South Korea although elements of the other (American) model can be found in both countries. An answer to the question whether Western antimonopoly law and its interpretation have been successful in eradicating traditional Far Eastern vertical monopolies or horizontal structures determining the functioning of the economy seems to be reserved.

The objective of this research paper is to explore and analyse mediation in the People’s Republic of China and in the Republic of China (Taiwan). The author also investigates the historical, philosophical and social origin of mediation and its development since the Han Dynasty. Mediation has a long tradition in China, and its importance can be traced back to the philosophy of Confucianism. Nowadays mediation is known as the key to resolving all disputes and linking it to the “harmonious society” political doctrine. There are currently a few types of mediation practices in China: mediation by People’s Mediation Committees outside the court, judicial mediation in civil disputes and minor criminal cases inside the court, mediation and arbitration of rural land contract disputes or mediation and arbitration in labour disputes. The importance of mediation is demonstrated by Article 111 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, which provides that “People’s Mediation Committees are a working committee under grassroots autonomous organisations – the Residents Committee and the Villagers Committee – whose mission is to mediate civil disputes.” The Committees and the courts should also popularise, through mediation and arbitration, the laws and the policy and educate citizens to abide by the laws and respect universally accepted morals. As can be seen, owing to the government’s guidance on mediation procedures the number of cases settled through mediation has markedly increased. The statistics show that the parties not only resolve their dispute but are also willing to resort to mediation again. The high success rate of mediation is, among other things, due to the fact that it is a safe and neutral process, and the mediators’ role in facilitating resolution does not impose a solution. Another advantage of mediation is speed and effectiveness as well as a reduction of costs. This article also discusses the Taiwanese experience with mediation, as well as its development. To sum up it may be said that mediation in the People’s Republic of China and in the Republic of China (Taiwan) functions well and is increasingly winning trust of citizens.

Taiwan’s democracy and freedom of the press provide the Chinese authorities with an opportunity to use Taiwanese businessmen to influence Taiwan’s media outlets and politics. China uses three inter-related strategies to influence Taiwan’s media in this way: persuading businessmen with pro-China views to purchase Taiwanese media outlets, pressuring existing media owners, and placing advertisements in Taiwan’s media in order to purchase political influence. In addition, the Chinese government also employs cyber-propaganda strategy to attack Taiwanese political parties and politicians.

We examined the use of dramatic/theater presentation for teaching oral skills to 37 Taiwanese EFL undergraduate students, with the main goal being to determine whether such strategies and performance experiences positively support oral skills in terms of motivation and achievement. Data were collected via performance evaluations, observations, a seminar, individual interviews, and a questionnaire. Results indicate significant increases in learner motivation and oral English achievement. Students were actively engaged and willing to put significant time and effort into the project. However, the process strongly affected some students in terms of performance-related stress.

The presented study was conducted to investigate vocational high school EFL teachers’ professional knowledge and teaching efficacy from teachers’ perspectives. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed by frequency distribution, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise regression. The results indicated that teachers have higher performance on professionalism and attitude to professional knowledge; teaching and class management in teaching efficacy. A significantly positive correlation was found between EFL teachers’ professional knowledge and teacher efficacy. Teachers reported that professional skills, professionalism, and attitude in professional knowledge were significant predictors of teaching efficacy. Professional knowledge helps to shape effective teaching.

Nowosad Inetta, Społeczno-kulturowe uwarunkowania demokratyzacji edukacji na Tajwanie [Social and cultural preconditions for the process of democratization in Taiwanese education]. Kultura – Społeczeństwo – Edukacja nr 2(14) 2018, Poznań 2018, pp. 137–154, Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-0422. DOI 10.14746/kse.2018.14.12. The article focuses on changes introduced in Taiwan’s education since 1949, which reflect the social changes taking place in this country. Special attention is drawn to the origin and the course of two particularly important processes, i.e. democratisation and taiwanisation, which have radically changed the face of education, revealing Taiwan’s ‘balancing’ between the East and the West. While depicting their essence, also complex links with Taiwan’s policies towards China and its orientation onto economic growth were taken into account.

Izabella Łabędzka, TRENING AKTORÓW WEDŁUG JERZEGO GROTOWSKIEGO I JEGO WPŁYW NA TAJWAŃSKI TEATR POSZUKUJĄCY. NA PRZYKŁADZIE WCZESNYCH DOŚWIADCZEŃ LIU JINGMIN. „PORÓWNANIA” 1 (24), 2019. T. XXIV, S. 175-194. ISSN 1733-165X. Niniejszy artykuł jest efektem wieloletnich badań terenowych prowadzonych na Tajwanie. Przedstawia on jedną z bardziej interesujących grup teatralnych w Tajpej, You Juchang/U-Theatre/Youren Shengu, która została założona w 1988 r. przez Liu Jingmin (Liu Ruoyu). Przemyślała i przestudiowała wiele chińskich i tajwańskich form teatru, technik oddechowych i medytacyjnych, tradycji muzycznych i tanecznych, bogatą kulturę maski i rytuałów religijnych.

Izabella Łabędzka, JERZY GROTOWSKI’S ACTOR TRAINING AND ITS IMPACT ON THE TAIWANESE SEARCHING THEATRE. THE CASE OF LIU JINGMIN’S EARLY EXPERIMENTS. “PORÓWNANIA” 1 (24), 2019. Vol. XXIV, P. 175-194. ISSN 1733-165X. The paper is a result of several years’ research conducted in Taiwan. It presents the early years of one of the most interesting theatre groups from Taipei, You Juchang/U-Theatre/Youren Shengu, which was established in 1988 by Liu Jingmin (Liu Ruoyu). Liu Jingmin was much inspired by Jerzy Grotowski’s idea of actor’s training presented by him in Irvine (California) in the mid-eighties. The article shows how Liu Jingmin started from imitating Grotowski’s physical exercises and later she focused on understanding her native culture. She rethought many Chinese and Taiwanese forms of theatre, meditation and breathing techniques, music and dance traditions, culture of masks andreligious rituals. The aim of this paper is to describe how Liu Jingmin for more than three decades had been working on a comprehensive development of the actor through perfecting his technical skills along with their spirit. Her goal was the internal/spiritual and external/physical transformation of a performer and finally creating a beautiful person.

The development of the nonprofit sector of a country can be assessed by several methods. We may begin by introducing the numeric data and finish by speaking of their social embedment. We may analyse their presence in the economy, the labour market or their contribution to political and social liberalization. In my study I refer to Taiwan as an example to introduce the complex presence and impact of all these processes on the development of the nonprofi t organizations in a country less known for a European researcher. With special respect to the economic and political aspects of “development”.

Egy ország civil szektorának fejlődését számos megközelítéssel mérhetjük. Kiindulhatunk a számszerű adatok bemutatásból és zárhatjuk a társadalmon belüli beágyozottsággukkal. Vizsgálhatjuk a gazdaságon belüli súlyukat, munkaerő-piaci jelenlétüket vagy a politikai, társadalmi liberalizációban játszott szerepüket. Tanulmányom Tajvan példáján keresztül próbálja bemutatni mindezen folyamatok együttes jelenlétét és hatását egy európai kutató számára kevésbé ismert ország civil szervezeteinek fejlődésére. Különös tekintettel a „fejlődés” gazdasági és politikai aspektusaira.
