The paper discusses the role of e-portfolio in the development of reflective thinking in a group of pre-service English as a foreign language teachers. It stresses the benefits it can bring (e.g. autonomous learning, cooperative learning - the author highlights the social context of e-portfolio) as well as presents the threats and risks it might bring based on the own experience of the author. The results of this case study showed that the process of e-portfolio building can enhance professional development, self-confidence and the ability to self-reflect own work and progress. The author indicates also the possibilities of its use not only in the groups of pre-service teacher trainers but also in the groups of in-service teachers.

There is a definite intersection of targets and intentions between education for sustainable development (ESD) and cross-cultural education (CCE), since both ESD and CCE aspire to pursue and develop values such as equity, democracy and quality of life in a multicultural setting. Apart from their common philosophical basis, ESD and CCE endorse similar teaching methods, i.e. experiential and cooperative learning, and pursue the development of abilities such as research interest, critical thought and political awareness, with the intention to develop a learning community intrinsically connected with the wider community and society. This study aspires to explore the possibilities of cooperative learning to effectively promote the aims of both ESD and CCE. The children of a public school in Thessaloniki, Greece, were involved in this action research related to their local environment. The methodological tools used included walk mapping and landscape analysis charts combined with environmental assessment sheets. The ensuing discussion facilitates reflection on the prospects of cooperation in a class with a mixed ability population.

Inclusive education is an expression of the educational system transformation and the transfer from focusing on adapting a pupil with special needs to school onto adapting teaching conditions to the pupul’s special needs. In this context, inclusive education is shown as a specific kind of intervening into the process of an individual’s socialisation having a double character of changes: in people, and in culture, which supports people’s development and building the inclusive society, in which people can experience unity in diversity. Cooperative learning is an educational strategy, which makes it possible to create a pro-inclusive social context and to develop pupills’ cognitive and social competencies necessary to function in a heterogenic community. The deliberations can be completed with the analysis of the selected factors conditioning cooperative learning in relation to pupils with disabilities and their non-disabled schoolmates. They are: (1) experience related to cooperation; (2) personal characteristics of pupils and (3) pupils’ preferences related to exercising task roles.

From the viewpoint of educators in teacher training, we focus on in-service teacher training for cooperation and the learning of cooperative skills. A theoretical framework and three empirical studies are presented, based on projects of teacher training for cooperation. Such projects were aimed at the implementation of personal/social education, the creation of teams of mutual assistance, and the evaluation of the quality of teaching. The text should open a discussion over new attitudes to the study of teacher cooperation, possibly offering a deeper insight into the questions of how to learn collegial cooperation.

The present study investigated the effectiveness of the Glogster and cooperative learning as differentiation models of English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) and Science projects. The study employed a mixed method study design whereby questionnaire and open-ended interview were incorporated to elicit the required data. Eighteen teachers along with eighteen intact classes (n=374) of grade 8 learners of English as a foreign language were randomly assigned to control and experimental conditions. The researchers collected open-ended data with the intent of understanding the meaning Science and English teachers have constructed and how they perceived differentiated instruction upon using the Glogster and cooperative learning in conducting and presenting projects. The findings proved that utilizing Glogster and cooperative learning as multifeatured model could improve students’ English and Science projects and enhance Science and English language teachers’ perceptions of differentiated instruction.

Abundant and extensive literature on training and employee development contains, apart from description of training methods, more and more information about evaluation of effectiveness of this process. Cooperative learning involves deepened reflection of a learner and discussion with other participants of the course. Knowledge is created during the learning process and its aim is to comprehensively process the situation. A teacher is a participant in this process, an advisor who cooperates, searches and shapes the active learning environment. The aim of the article is to present the method of cooperative learning and determine the factors that may significantly influence the effectiveness of training based on this method. The article contains theoretical remarks regarding cooperative learning process as well as the nature of factors conditioning the effectiveness of the training process.

This article presents the relationship between the Finnish educational change in schools (the Finnish Reform Movement), selected aspects of teachers’ professional development and context of educational thinking influenced by John Dewey’s pedagogy. The successful change of schools “calls for a ‘new professionalism’ in which teachers’ work is based on research-based, outcomes-oriented, data-driven and team focused at the same time as it is globalised, localised and individualised, with lifelong professional learning the norm for the specialist in school education” (Caldwell, 2003, p. 8). In this light, the article presents an overview of in-service training of teachers, cooperative learning and teachers’ autonomy in schools in the context of teachers’ professional development.

Coherence Model of Instruction

EN
The article deals with three main issues: the understanding of curriculum in context, the ability of contextualisation, and retention of knowledge in long-term memory. The paper first suggests principles based on the coherence model of instruction, which aims to achieve coherence of knowledge of isolated facts through a network of semantic relationships. Then, the theoretical basis of the model is described, including spatial learning strategies, cooperative learning, and excursions in an authentic environment supported by mobile devices. A methodology of teaching was designed according to the principles of the coherence model, and a virtual guide through educational exhibitions was developed. The virtual guide was tested with students of a primary school during an experimental lecture in the Ostrava Zoo. An evaluation of the coherence model and the virtual guide was carried out using three methods: an observation of students’ behaviour and learning during the experimental lecture, a pedagogical experiment, and an evaluation of questionnaires. The results of the evaluation proved that the coherence model of instruction has a positive impact on understanding in context, ability of contextualisation, and retention of the curriculum in long-term memory.

The article investigates some problems that foreign language teachers may face when working with young pupils. They include especially poor memory, difficulties of distinguishing similar sounds, understanding the relations of a letter and a sound, decoding single words and so on. Some learners with learning difficulties and disorders present even more challenges for their language teachers. Furthermore, the author provides guidance for teachers that may help to overcome these problems. Thus, it is hoped the present paper will contribute not only to a better understanding of the problem area of difficult learners, but will also encourage teachers to implement some new solutions in their regular lessons.

This paper addresses the existing concepts in didactics and asks if they can be transferred to a new and hybrid learning experience. Considering that the construction of knowledge is based on a technique that is universal to human anthropology, there is an essential social dimension in learning and working together on texts in the digital space. The example for that is the usage of blogs and wikis in German lessons. The author starts off by explaining the use of Wikipedia to illustrate the idea of collaborative writing. Next, he discusses some consequences of the use of digital platforms in schools and goes on to address the problems of the digital shift in teaching and of hybrid learning from a critical-constructive perspective (kritisch-konstruktive Didaktik), as developed by Wolfgang Klafki. Finally, he submits that the existing concepts in the field of didactics can be transferred to the new social experience of teaching/learning in virtual lessons.
