The relation of Translation Studies to Applied Linguistics is not presently the question unequivocally perceived or determined. In particular, it should be considered if it is reasonable to place Translation Studies within the framework of Applied Linguistics which is done by the authors who refer to F. Grucza's claims. Deliberations on this issue, conducted with reference to various concepts in translatology, make the author acknowledge that Translation Studies is a linguistic discipline, but as a whole, is not embraced within Applied Linguistics. The theory of translation, i.e. theoretical studies of translation, should be placed outside Applied Linguistics, leaving within its scope various areas of Applied Translation Studies, namely: translation criticism, translation didactics, studies of particular translation types, studies of translation in specific languages, and of particular text types, studies of community interpreting, and also – with certain reservations – the history of translation.

The article analyses strategies utilised by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska, a translator of the novel Dopo il divorzio by Grazia Deledda, to introduce Deledda’s works on the polish literary market. The text shows ways in which characteristics of Deledda’s works and Kościałkowska’s translation strategies serve to minimise the effect of foreignness and to present Deledda’s works as important argument in the polemics between the literary tradition and the modernity. In consequence, the Polish translation of Dopo il divorzio may be viewed as an act of an influence on a Polish literary system.

The main aim of this paper is to look at the biography of Paweł Hulka-Laskowski, a theologian, pedagogue, writer and diplomat, through the perspective of his perennial work as a translator. Unlike his contemporaries – translators active in the interwar period in Poland, Hulka-Laskowski is still well-recognized, the collective memory of him is, however, refracted, often omits his translation work. The paper demonstrates that his experience as a translator was key to his entire professional and private life – both were related to the translation of the series for American teenagers What a Young Man (Woman) Ought to Know.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest spojrzenie na biografię Pawła Hulki-Laskowskiego: teologa, pedagoga, pisarza i dyplomaty z perspektywy jego wieloletniej pracy przekładowej. Hulka-Laskowski, w przeciwieństwie do wielu innych tłumaczek i tłumaczek aktywnych w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym, do dziś funkcjonuje w obiegowej pamięci, jednak jest to pamięć osobliwa, niemal zupełnie pomijającadziałalność przekładową twórcy. Pragnę pokazać, jak kluczowe dla biografii Hulki- Laskowskiego jest doświadczenie przekładu, który kształtuje i odzwierciedla życiowe wybory, postawy i światopogląd. Dowodem może być podjęcie decyzji o przekładzie i adaptacji amerykańskich książek dla młodzieży „Cnotą a prawdą”– zaskakująco postępowej i nowoczesnej serii zawierającej treści, które do dziś bywajątabuizowane.

Is it necessary to refer literally to all the words in order to translate a text faithfully? The ancient Syriac-speaking church already lived this dilemma. In no ancient language can we have access to a series of translations from different centuries in order to follow the diachronic development of the translation technique so closely. This paper presents for the first time to a Polish reader the process of transformation of the New Testament translations into Syriac from reader-oriented to source-oriented type. Contemporary categories of dynamic and formal equivalence help us to describe the characteristic features of particular translations, in which different assumptions and goals lead to a new reception of the text. The translation technique is analyzed on the example of John 3:1.2.16.17 in three Syriac translations from different epochs: Vetus Syra, Peshitta, Harklean. A broader supplementary bibliography on the topics discussed is also presented.
