Multilingual films usually tackle significant social and political issues. Sometimes, these films adopt linguistic diversity to create confusion and to trigger humour, accomplishing a comic effect. Normally, films about migration and diaspora are multilingual, as they want to recreate the linguistic diversity that exists in reality. There are many cases though in which the translator/adapter faces the struggle of translating into his/her own language. In this paper, we will analyse the Italian dubbing of Big Night, to see how the dialogues have been conveyed and especially how verbally expressed humour and stereotypes from the Italian language and culture are transferred intralingually and to what effect.

The medical language, the same as every specialist language, often hinders or even disenables successful communication between a specialist and a layman (the doctor and the patient). It is characterised not only by specialist terminology referring to medical knowledge, which is usually unavailable to the patient, but also the occurrence of words of foreign origin, specific structures and numerous abbreviations and acronyms. German speaking patients can, however, use various tools which enable to understanding information conveyed during a conversation with a doctor or such contained in medical documentation. Among them, it is worth mentioning the initiatives of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Foundation and “Was hab’ ich?” gGmbH initiated a few years ago, whose main purpose is to provide information to patients in a manner understandable to them, such as an online diagnosis translator (Diagnosen-Dolmetscher), a translator of medical specialisation names (Facharzt-Dolmetscher), a translation of test results (Befunddolmetscher). The best assistance can be given to patients on the portal washabich.de, which allows to send parts of medical records and obtain their free translation into general language. All the above mentioned tools facilitating the comprehension of medical language can be treated as tools offering intralingual translation, defined as the rendering of specialist terms in the general language, understandable for the patient, who is not a specialist in the field of medicine. This paper presents and elaborates on examples of intralingual translations of selected German medical terminology, derived from the above tools. The purpose of the analysis comprises an attempt to portray elements of medical documentation which, in the opinion of students and doctors, need to be reformulated into language understandable to patients.

Although Jakobson’s (1959) seminal classification of translation into three kinds: interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic has been widely accepted in Translation Studies, so far most research interest has focused on interlingual translation, defined as “translation proper”. Intralingual translation, more often understood as rewording, paraphrasing or reformulation within the same language, is a less prototypical kind of translation, yet we believe that the underlying mental operations needed to perform both tasks include similar processing stages. Bearing in mind the lack of research comparing inter-and intralingual translation we designed the ParaTrans project in which we investigate how translators make decisions in both tasks. In this article we present the results of a comparative analysis of processing effort and cognitive rhythm demonstrated by professional translators who were asked to translate and paraphrase similar texts. Having collected three streams of translation process data with such tools as key-logging, eye-tracking and screen-capture software, we are able to draw some tentative conclusions concerning the similarities and differences between language processing for interlingual translation and intralingual paraphrasing. The results confirm a higher processing effort in interlingual translation most likely due to the need to switch between languages.

As some scholars view inter-and intra-lingual translation as a parallel activity, it is vital to establish to what extent the products of these processes are alike, and whether the processes themselves differ. This paper investigates stylistic simplification, a frequently hypothesised translation universal which involves, among others, breaking up long sentences in the process of translation (Laviosa 2002). One of the parameters commonly used in the investigations of simplification in translations is the average sentence length. In the present study we focus on sentence length to see if the tendency to incorporate stylistic simplification is equally present in the products of inter-and intralingual translation; what phases of the translation process are decisive for sentence length; whether the scope of consultation with the source text affects sentence length. Finally, we will try to verify if average sentence length is dependent on the level of translation experience.

Autorka sprawdza umiejętności uczniów w zakresie tworzenia określonych konstrukcji słowotwórczych (form deminutywnych oraz nazw męskich i żeńskich) w ciągach proporcjonalnych relacji z zastosowaniem określonej parafrazy. Korzysta z pierwszej propozycji opisu leksyki prof. Józefa Wierzchowskiego, która nawiązuje do założeń strukturalnego ujęcia systemu językowego i zwraca uwagę na rolę frazy łączącej, spełniającej wymóg przekładu wewnątrzjęzykowego w ustalaniu relacji między wyrazami opartej na podobieństwie formy i treści. Zebrany za pomocą ankiet materiał pochodzi od uczniów klas II i III oraz V i VI szkoły podstawowej, szkoły zawodowej i technikum oraz studentów niedosłyszących. Grupę kontrolną stanowią studenci filologii polskiej. Analiza wskazuje, że w tworzeniu nawet tych najłatwiejszych konstrukcji słowotwórczych ujawniają się różnice nie tylko między uczniami młodszymi i starszymi, ale – co ważniejsze – również wśród uczniów z tych samych grup wiekowych. Wskazują one uczniów z nieporadnościami/ trudnościami językowymi, uczniów z trudnościami w uczeniu się czytania i pisania, często wadami wymowy. Umiejętność korzystania z przekładu wewnątrzjęzykowego dowodzi ich problemów w zakresie sprawności metajęzykowych, rozumienia struktury języka, wykorzystywania systemu do ujmowania wiedzy o świecie bez konieczności jego bezpośredniego doświadczania.

The author assesses students’ abilities to create specific word-formation constructions (diminutive forms and masculine and feminine names) in sequences of proportional relations, with the use of specific paraphrases. The author makes use of the first proposal of description of lexis by Prof. Jerzy Wierzchowski, which refers to the assumptions of a structural formulation of a language system and takes into account the role of a connective phrase, fulfilling the condition of an intralingual translation when establishing the relations between words based on the similarity of form and content. The material collected through questionnaires comes from students from grades II and III, V and VI of primary school, vocational school, secondary technical school and students with impaired hearing. The control group consists of Polish philology students. The analysis shows that in creating even the easiest word-formation constructions differences not only between younger and older students but also, more importantly, between students of the same age group, become manifest. They indicate students with language awkwardness/difficulties, students with learning difficulties with respect to reading and writing, often with speech defects. The ability to use the intralingual translation proves their problems in the sphere of metalinguistic skills, understanding of the language structure, implementing the system to express knowledge about the world without the need to experience it directly.
