The aim of this paper is to explore older in-migrants' experiences and perceptions of their spatial context at the neighbourhood level, the key aspects in their attachment to the neighbourhood, and the role of place in their experience of ageing. Our qualitative research was carried out in Newton Hall (United Kingdom). The findings show that older people can have a proactive role in terms of placemaking and their own wellbeing. However, the study also reveals that the condition of the spatial context can either support or hinder older people's sense of wellbeing.

The paper discusses the issue of the involvement of older people in decision-making at the level of a housing cooperative in Warsaw (Poland) to examine the characteristics of older adults' participation in the democratic and deliberative process of housing policy. Using the qualitative methodology (case study, exploratory research visit, document analysis and in-depth interviews), the analyses suggest a considerable influence of older people over the decision-making in the selected housing cooperative. The gathered data are indicative of the antagonistic character of the housing policy process. This is due to several factors: diverse attitudes, the opinions and interests of different groups of older people, and communication problems between generations.

The aging of the population in Europe brings an increase in the group of people 65+, which is important to reflect on not only from the perspective of state governance in developing strategies and finding solutions to aging-related phenomena such as the growing economic dependence of older people, but it is also necessary to pay attention to this in terms of the theory and practice of human resources and age management within using the employment potential of older people in the labor market. The article focuses on the employment potential index of older people (EPIOP) and on the characterization of the factors which were used to create EPIOP and subsequently to monitor its development in the European Union (EU 28) during the years 2008-2018. The data were obtained from Eurostat and UNECE databases. The findings indicate that the indices of the individual countries had a predominantly increasing trend and converged with the EU 28 average, and none of the countries monitored in the index fell below the base year 2008 throughout the period under review. Latvia (23%), Bulgaria (23%) and Cyprus (19%) had significantly higher growth rates compared to the base year. The lowest EPIOP grew in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The EU 28 average had a maximum growth rate of 9%.

Nowadays one can observe progressive demographic changes in the form of, among others, an increasing proportion of post-working age population and lowering birth rates. The negative consequences of these changes are visible especially in the labour market. For these reasons, it is necessary to undertake efforts aimed at improving working conditions, retraining employees, as well as introducing flexible working hours in order to increase employment among older people. These activities support the implementation of the concept of age management which is becoming increasingly popular among European countries. This idea aims to allow workers, and particularly the elderly, a fuller use of their abilities, thereby increasing their motivation to work. Consequently, it seems that higher employee productivity has a positive effect on the stabilization of employment and enterprise development

Background and Purpose: Chronic diseases and associated co-morbidities are highly prevalent among elderly and are associated with an increase in health services utilization which in turn raises health care expenditures throughout industrialized societies. However, health care utilization in elderly is still inadequately understood, particularly regarding the differences among European jurisdictions. In our article, we use dataset of Wave 5 of SHARE survey to study the utilization of health care in older Europeans in 15 European countries. Design/Methodology/Approach: We investigate relationships between factors such as age, gender, income, education and health variables and the utilization of various types of health services. We apply regression modeling to study the determinants of health utilization (different socioeconomic and health variables) of older people. Results: We show some significant differences between determinants of health utilization in terms of probability and frequency of usage. We also explore patterns between welfare regimes, taking Eastern European jurisdictions as a reference category. Finally, we show that in a simple causal model the provision of formal and/or informal homecare serves as a complement to utilization of health care services. Conclusion: Results of our article are important for the management of health care facilities in terms of health care usage by older people, and can be of value to health care providers and policy makers in the field.

This article is inspired by an EU-founded project on intergenerational mentoring: ‘HEAR ME’, which was conducted from 2009–2011 in five European countries. Starting from the demographic challenges that affect all European welfare states, the authors discuss attitudes to and possibilities in involvement of older people in voluntary social work as mentors for young people. The challenge of the ageing societies is quite often discussed as the ‘burden of the elderly’ and discussed as an economic problem. However, the challenge is not only economical. It is also a social and cultural challenge, among other things because a unilateral focus on the economic aspects may cause dissolution of the social cohesion and decrease in well-being for far too many people. The HEAR ME project aimed at developing strategies for lifelong learning and new roles for older people based on their competences, network and an assumed desire of generativity. Action learning seems to be an appropriate learning concept in relation to keeping older people engaged in the community. The authors thus point at participating and lifelong learning as part of the answers to the demographic challenges, and they suggest what you might call a pedagogical turn in social work and social policy. The challenge of the ageing societies is quite often discussed as the ‘burden of the elderly’ and discussed as an economic problem. Funkcjonowanie miasta to nieustanny dialog miejskiej przestrzeni i uczestników miejskiego życia. The functioning of the city is a constant dialogue between urban space and the participants of urban life. The results of this conversation are manifested through meanings that appear in the space, relations that are established, and places that are made. That is how the culture of space is born, how people become aware of urban polis. Older people also participate in this dialogue. The purpose of this article is to focus on the position of the elders in the city; we will try to determine whether the urban space is a place of hope or merely a hiding place for them. Source materials for the article are, besides specialist literature, interviews conducted among the elders of Lublin and an interview with the organizer of Forum Kultury Przestrzeni and with the originator of the project of joint taking pictures of Lublin by elders and teenagers.
