Media consumption is commonly seen as a major way of appropriating languages and cultures. Availability and accessibility of material are essential conditions for developing plurilingual cultural practices. Transnational circulation of cultural goods has reached a particular intensity in today’s world but is still marked by deep language inequalities. Combining sociolinguistic, language education, cultural sociology, and multiliteracy approaches, this study examines how plurilingual readers access books in their different languages. This qualitative analysis is based on 24 in-depth interviews with both migrant and non-migrant adults living in Western Europe. The findings indicate that printed and digital books in dominant languages circulate more easily, and through more visible and formal channels than books in dominated languages. In addition, the local and online book supply in dominant languages is generally cheaper and more varied, thus being more attractive. However, a wider range of means of access to books, and the active participation of the readers themselves in the circulation of cultural goods enable book-reading practices in less disseminated languages. Pedagogical recommendations for language teachers to encourage autonomous cultural practices among learners according to global evolutions and local specificities are provided.

This article is the product of reflection on contemporary Polish poetry, particularly the new diction. A close reading of the beginning of Bohdan Zadura’s poem “1 VIII 1979 7.45 – 22.45 [czternaście godzin z Piotrem Sommerem]” (1 August 1979, 7:45-22:45 [fourteen hours with Piotr Sommer]) and Piotr Sommer’s “Wiersz o przecinkach” (Poem About Commas) leads to, on the one hand, positing a thesis on the inadequacy of previous conceptions of poetics of the moment (the author enters into a discussion with the concept of “grammaticalizing the system of line-by-line production of messages” proposed by Artur Grabowski), and, on the other hand, to the development of a concept of the poem engaged on the side of change (within a broader description of modernist poetics of indefinition).

Artykuł jest owocem refleksji nad najnowszą poezją polską, szczególnie tzw. nowych dykcji. Bliska lektura początku poematu Bohdana Zadury 1 VIII 1979 7.45 – 22.45 [czternaście godzin z Piotrem Sommerem] oraz Wiersza o przecinkach Piotra Sommera prowadzi – z jednej strony – do sformułowania tezy o niewystarczalności dotychczasowych koncepcji poetyk momentalnych (autor podejmuje dyskusję z koncepcją „zgramatykalizowania systemu wersowego wytwarzania komunikatów” zaproponowaną przez Artura Grabowskiego), z drugiej zaś – do wypracowania koncepcji wiersza zaangażowanego po stronie zmian (w ramach szerszej charakterystyki modernistycznych poetyk nieokreśloności).

Play, in its many forms and categories, is a connecting thread running through Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s poetics. The aim of this article is to study the ludic modalities of reading practices represented in the writer-philosopher’s short stories. Analyses of the thematization of playing, game and reading experiences are conducted through the prism of theories of reception and play. The significant cases of readers with psychotic or (post)bovarian tendencies, experienced or beginners, reveal various effects and uses of ludic reading and its possible drifts. The practices of different types of readers in fabula, whether pathological or beneficial, are studied with the aim of identifying ludic and game devices of this novelistic art with a singular childhood spirit.

Le jeu, dans ses formes et catégories multiples, constitue un fil conducteur dans la poétique d’Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. L’objectif de cet article est d’étudier les modalités ludiques des pratiques de lecture représentées dans les nouvelles de l’écrivain-philosophe. Les analyses de la thématisation d’expériences de jeu et de lecture sont menées au prisme des théories de la réception et du jeu. Les cas significatifs de lecteurs aux tendances psychotiques ou (post)bovariques, expérimentés ou débutants, sont révélateurs de divers effets et usages de la lecture-jeu et de ses dérives possibles. Les pratiques lectrices, pathologiques ou bénéfiques, associées à différents profils de lecteurs in fabula, sont étudiées dans le but de dégager les dispositifs ludiques de cet art nouvellistique empreint d’un esprit d’enfance singulier.

Rozwój techniczny wywołuje zmiany warunków życia współczesnego człowieka powodując przemiany osobowościowe, wzorce kulturowe, sposób postrzegania siebie i innych. Przykładem przeobrażeń społecznych są przemiany w praktykach czytelniczych, w których tradycyjne formy przekazu informacji i wiedzy zastępowane zostają formami przekazu elektronicznego.

Technological development causes changes in the living conditions of contemporary people, resulting in personality changes, cultural patterns and the way people perceive themselves and others. An example of social transformation are changes in reading practices, in which traditional forms of information and knowledge transfer are replaced by forms of electronic communication.

The aim of this article is to present the results of research carried out within the European perspective on Literature, Culture, Language and Certification (EpoLCLC) project, according to three main axes: contemporary reading practices and the image of French literature among contemporary readers in a sociological approach; reading strategies of foreign language texts in a psycholinguistic approach; the place of translations and the representation of the role of the literary translator among contemporary readers in the light of conceptions related to cultural transfers and the global circulation of literature. The analysis and interpretation of the data collected during the course of the project will make it possible to compare the image we have of literature and the reader in our time with a set of real practices and beliefs, as defined by the people questioned during the study. More generally, it will be a question of drawing up, again from the data collected, a portrait of the European student as a reader and of defining the place that French and Francophone literature occupies in his or her daily practices.
