The aim o f this article is to outline the terminological differences and dissimilarities in studies on texts, as well as present problems in classification of texts or, morę specifically, difficulties in their descriptions in German and PolLh philological reflection and in fmding common points in defining particular phenomena and terms. This is an attempt at systematization in order to avoid terminological discrepancies and the misunderstanding of terms. The article also shows various research methods within the linguistic genealogy in the contrastive approach, and their significant influence on shaping and grounding particular terms. It seems crucial in this context to outline the newest trends within the scope of scientific interest of German linguistic genealogy, taking into account morę and morę clearly articulated postulates emphasizing the necessity o f extending the rangę of studies in this field to include literary texts, which in cońseąuence may lead to necessary terminological verification.

In the article the author analyses three kinds of descriptions created during Polish language classes in forms 4–6 — description of an object, of a human figure and of a landscape. She explores the structure of the pupils’ texts, taking into account, first of all, the order of description elements and the level of detail. Her analysis demonstrates that achieving the right level of detail is difficult for pupils and depends to a large extent on how instructions are formulated and whether the pupils can see they object they are describing. When it comes to the order of description elements, the most frequently used arrangement is hierarchical, complemented by an arrangement best suited to the object being described, e.g. vertical for a description of a human figure or horizontal for a description of a landscape. The author’s research confirms that the ability to create such texts require practice and in-depth analysis of one’s surroundings.

The article deals with the problem of teaching students (both native speakers and foreigners) how to model and write business texts. The paper also describes the main characteristics of the organization of a text document. In order to make the business text the effective means of achieving a communicative goal, it is necessary to have special strategies and tactics of the discourse: strategy of informing, encouraging strategy, the strategy of persuasion, and strategy commitments. Knowledge of the discursive strategies and tactics of written business communication, as well as the laws that form the content aspect of writing and the ability to use them in accordance with the purposes and conditions of communication is the key to successful business communication in Russian.

The paper aims to explain the interconnections between text and discourse. It presents some views on discourse and text, and concludes that discourse has the superior and multicodal character in relation to text. An assumption is made that text has a dual nature; it is a product of language, and part of communication. Moreover, the author makes an attempt to describe the role of context as a kind of mechanism which links the level of text with the area of discourse, thus rendering the text comprehensible. In addition, the paper emphasizes the cognitive processes involved in the comprehension of text through context.

Translations have been an interesting part of the history of literature. What has been their function and meaning in different literary epochs? Did they promote new tendencies or influence the creativity of the writers? What has been underestimated so far is the art of translation itself, that is, the development of techniques and styles of translation according to changes in the translator’s work conditions, especially the emancipation, secularization and professionalization of the profession, so that they have been seen as equal in importance to the writers themselves. What should be analyzed are the procedures and practices of translation, which can be interpreted according to contemporary textology. The history of the art of translation is also inspired by contemporary cultural studies, because it regards translation as an institution and focuses on translation discourse, that is, the complex of images, ideas and metaphors that each translator must respect when considering their readers. The tradition of translation is partly different from literary tradition in that the rules of ‘good translation’ promoted at certain times create a codex of a translator’s work.

The board game instruction is a utility text which aims at helping its recipient. Therefore, the instruction should be written in an understandable, accessible and unambiguous way, so that the player can use the new information in practice. Recipients are people who want to buy a particular board game or already want to play it. It is the instruction that allows them to use the board game the right way. For this reason, it is important what the instruction looks like and how it has been written. The objective of the following article is to examine if this kind of text achieves its communicative goals. The text might be considered effective in the communication context if the recipient manages to follow the provided instruction. 24 different kinds of board game instructions were examined with the Jasnopis application, analysing text fogging and checking against the principles of the Wrocław model of plain language. Moreover, the research material has been tested in terms of the graphic design, linguistic correctness, as well as recipient’s perspective. The analysis showed that, even if the form aids communication, the text’s contents make the opposite. Layout and graphics help the recipients understand the rules. However, the sentence structure and used words add to the difficulty of the text.

Despite the ambiguity of the term discourse in German studies on discourse, a tendency is visible to specify the term for the purposes of particular research studies. These issues are addressed in the opening sections of the article. The article also discusses the relation between text and discourse, and reaches the conclusion stating that discourse linguistics is more than merely an extension of text linguistics, as both phenomena, i.e., text and discourse display a difference in quality. A question is also raised about the place of text in various trends of research on discourse. Particular schools/research groups show diversity in terms of theoretical conceptions, research methods, as well as in relation to the reception of Foucault’s ideas. Texts are in them undoubtedly an element of continuing discourse in the sense of corpus, in discourse analysis itself, however, researchers frequently focus only on selected linguistic aspects, rarely relying on text linguistics tools. The closing sections present a few suggestions within text-oriented discourse linguistics, which is understood here as a trend of the evolutionary character.

The article presents the practice of subjectivizing scientific creativity by referring to the role of intuition in the creation process, introspective reports and comments on spatial information processing. One of the main emphases is placed on the interaction between the author’s sense of subjectivity with the idea generated and developed by him, as well as on how the reader senses this interaction. These findings became the basis for adopting assumptions about individual and disciplinary differences in strategy and the intensity of the subjectivization of scientific texts by creators and recipients. The article was prepared in a performative and dialogical formula.

The article analyzes relations between the text and the image as two different semiotic modes in the framework of multimodal studies. Key theoretical approaches to this issue are outlined. Visual and verbal narratives are examined at three levels: ideational, interpersonal and textual. The ideational meaning system comprises actions, characters and circumstances. The interpersonal system covers a wide range of issues connected with interaction between the reader and the characters. The textual meaning is realized by giving prominence to certain objects in the image or the text. Logico-semantic relations of elaboration, enhancement and extension are revealed. Elaboration is characterized by clarification and exemplification, the image may be more general than the text, and vice versa. Enhancement relations include various circumstances (temporal, spatial, causal), besides, both the text and the image may enhance each other. Extension adds new, semantically unrelated information and offers alternative ways of story unfolding. The research is based on contemporary picture books (J. Scieszka, L. Anholt, F. French, R. Munsch) and illustrated fairy tales (E. Delessert, B. Ensor) and directed at revealing various types of text-image relations.

The article gives analysis of author’s manuscript dedications inscribed predominantly on the title page. The dedication is a short text, closed in terms of content and composi- tion, in which author ascribes his/her work. The basie pattem of dedicatory formula inclu- des: a name of addressee, a reąuest for reception and a signature of addresser. On one hand dedicatory formulae as the typical minimal texts, serving a polite function of a language, retain continuity and permanence of some of the structures (a few linguistic conventions are repeated); on the other they are distinguished by individual, original mo- difications conceming mainly well thought out and elaborated forms in comparison with minimal pattem. The stylistic form of a dedication depends largely on the relation between addresser and recipient, sociol status of interlocutors, type of relations, the choice of functional style, situation in which the action is performed, the time of formation is less important.Even thought contemporary dedications are characterized by morę straightforward way of addressing recipient, diversity of occasions and spontaneity, they still retain so- lemn naturę of statement.

Is a text for the modern young man a communication anachronism? In this era of communication practices based on fast, informative or ludic transmission, competencies related to the necessity to create coherent, effective and correct texts are disappearing. This article presents a diagnosis of high school students’ communication skills in this area with reference to the educational documents (Core Curriculum) and selected writings – from student work and external examinations. After analyzing the results there are a number of conclusions that can be drawn about the school educational practices. Firstly, centrally proposed programs do indeed raise the awareness of the need for certain text exponents in different genres, but analytical operations associated with the analysis of fragments of texts do not contribute to student’s thinking about the text as a coherent whole. Secondly, the emphasis on recreating a particular structure of the text in the genre (which is most likely to appear during an exam), contributes to a certain mechanical behavior in that regard.

The author of the article, based on her own clinical experience of working with the deaf, presents the ways adults can learn to write texts in Polish as a foreign language. She proposes exercises to improve their text editing ability. She draws attention to the words of W. T. Miodunka „Editing written texts is in fact a work on the basics of language as a developed code” [2003: 221].

This article is part of the research on football linguistics. Its goal is to analyse and compare the banners appearing in German and Polish football stadiums in the light of speech act theory. The aim is to show that not only football matches take place in a football stadium, but also social or political concerns are addressed and processed. The following questions serve as a criterion for the analysis: In which aspects are the German and Polish banners similar? What are the differences between them? With what linguistic intention do the authors of these texts act and how should they be classified according to the emotional charge? After the theoretical introduction, which briefly describes the conceptual foundations of text linguistics and refers to football and its language, the analysis of the collected corpus is presented. The corpus consists first and foremost of texts published on banners, transcribed according to the original spelling, as well as precise details of the respective matches. One or more speech act types are assigned to each text, although their number is limited to 26. The assignment is based on Searle’s speech act theory. Furthermore, each text is evaluated axiologically. For this, in most cases it is indispensable to know the exact context in which the banner is embedded, and the vocabulary and the addressee group also play an important role. The results of the analysis are summarised numerically. Their discussion is rounded off by conclusions which refer, among other things, to the fact that the language of football fans is very masculine in character, direct, sometimes vulgar and brutal. In the stands, the collective clearly stands above the individual. However, values such as dignity, honour and respect also come to the fore. This analysis is not only a linguistic examination of a linguistic phenomenon, but also an overview of a diverse and multifaceted culture that is part of society.

This paper highlights the main issues concerned with competences necessary for the documentary film reception. The main purpose of this article is to investigate pedagogy students’ (specialization: social-cultural animation) understanding of documentary films on the basis of their narration and to define the basic competences in film understanding. According to the thesis, competences for proper film reception require general knowledge which enables individuals to make choices, understanding conventions, contexts and interdependences. Research focuses on the reception of Polish documentary films created before the political changes in 1989. The analysis of results and final conclusions are based on Umberto Eco’s and Francesco Casetti’s theoretical concept of the text assumptions. The study has confirmed assumptions presented above and justified the following conclusion: documentary film is a text based on the specific competence of the spectator but also contributes to the formation of certain competence. The film text makes the spectator capable of actualizing the various meaning-contents and the role of the spectator is to update his knowledge while receiving documentary film. The textual cooperation gives the spectator an essential role in the process of creating meaning.

The author of the article considers the importance of a note in education as well as in social and professional life and therefore she decides to reinterpret its function from two points of view: a traditional one existing in didactics (note ensures durability of the results of teach-ing) and from a perspective of media communication and digital reality that in many cases lead to reinterpretation and redefinition of many fixed opinions. Having defined such field of interest, the author of the article presents a note from a perspective of dominating today particular Polonistic concept of education. She presents taking notes as multistage process of gaining skills to write texts and proposes effective model of working on a note in a class (defined in stages and conditions) – while a student matures to his own textual activity.

The article analyses Miloslav Kabeláč’s op. 50 (1965), the first of the series of his most mature works In some way, words play an essential role in all these works by introducing great humanistic and philosophical subjects. Words represent substance sui generis, and enter the composition as an autonomous form (contact with such substance matures the long thought compositional concepts, together with Kabeláč’s tectonically combinatory thinking). The analysis of op. 50 focuses in detail on the key relationship between music and words. It seems that the space, in which both components meet is in the form of a litany. In its juxtaposition with bi-polar format conception (based on two contrasting sound platforms – drama and reconciliation), and with regards to the title of the composition Eufemias Mysterion (The Mystery of Silence), it could be seen as a specific type of expression, a ritual and an initiation of space.
