Feedback is one of the essential elements in the writing classroom. With its two forms, teacher and peer, feedback can help students modify their essays to produce better later drafts. However, the practice of feedback in class does not go without some drawbacks on both the teacher and students’ side. This paper tries to demonstrate by reference to recent studies how the use of electronic feedback can aid in providing a better environment for feedback that can, consequently, result in better essays by the students. The paper presents some classroom practices regarding the use of electronic feedback.

Over the past decade aspects pertinent to the area of feedback have been extensively explored by researchers. While some of the studies show positive effects of peer review, others discuss its problematic areas. In spite of the controversies the new ways of integrating peer feedback in ESL classrooms are being explored. Researchers show an interest in looking into the possibilities of integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in providing feedback to students. This paper discusses students’ experience of receiving and providing peer feedback using blogs that was integrated into a Life Sciences classroom in a private university in Malaysia in the year 2010. While carrying out the research, qualitative research methods were employed. Data were mainly gathered through interviews, peer feedback questionnaire and students’ writings posted to their blogs. Students used their blogs as an online portfolio, where they shared their experiences and posted writing assignments based on lessons and discussions. The findings and discussion of this paper may assist practitioners in implementing blog peer feedback process and designing suitable activities for use in ESL classrooms.

In Vision 2020, Malaysia aspires to become a fully developed country by the year 2020 (The Malaysian Dream: Vision 2020). Later, the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was announced in August 1995 to spearhead a number of nationwide IT projects that are intended to transform major sectors of Malaysian society including education using IT. One of the IT projects that was implemented was the Smart School project. Among its objectives was to prepare Malaysian citizens for the information age through an innovative education delivery process. This study specifically investigates teachers’ use of computers in teaching English as a second language (ESL) in a public school in Malaysia. It examines teachers’ attitudes, the challenges that they faced in using computers in teaching English, and their suggestions in order to overcome these challenges. Feedback gathered from questionnaires show that they faced many challenges that demotivate them from using computers in the classroom. The results of the study suggest that there must be strong support of both the instructional and administrative aspects of IT in the school so that teachers will be able to embrace IT fully in teaching English in their classroom.

Research into the emotional experiences of language learners and their impact upon the language-learning process remains relatively undernourished within second language education. The research available focuses primarily on emotions experienced within the classroom, rather than in the daily lives of learners within various social contexts. This article contends that the focus placed upon emotions within the relatively structured environment of the formal classroom is problematic, particularly within an ESL environment, as the target language is more frequently experienced beyond the classroom. Drawing on data collected within Australia, the study explored the emotional experiences of a small cohort of eight university-level ESL learners experienced within their various social interactions beyond the classroom with a specific focus on the emotions of hope, enjoyment and frustration. Semi-structured interviews revealed that their emotional experiences beyond the classroom were particularly intense in comparison to emotional experiences within the formal language-learning classroom.

The aim of this article is to describe how the interdisciplinary approach to teaching English, based on some aspects of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) methodology, is implemented by combining environmental science, sustainable development, and the English language. The paper introduces an English as a Second Language (ESL) course book designed for students of Environmental Monitoring, who study biomonitoring within the framework of an experimental CLIL course. At the end of each topic students present a project which proves their acquisition of professional and language knowledge. As a result, students obtain professional competence in a wide range of skills. More importantly, this goal is achieved without extending the curriculum.

Inclusion of technology in the process of second language acquisition has always been a priority for both teachers and theoreticians. This paper reviews the current trends in using video-based language instruction in K-12 educational settings. Although it has been demonstrated for many years that the use of video as an instructional medium provides unique learning qualities, it has not been entirely embraced by high school English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. Furthermore, recent advancements of digital video (low cost equipment and editing software) and Web-based video sharing services provide remarkable possibilities for supporting a variety of learning activities in ESL classrooms. Yet, classroom practice in using video technology has not gone too far beyond simple viewing and listening to video content for eliciting discussion among ESL students. This paper particularly highlights the role of video in the process of improving student pronunciation and presentation skills. The authors described a week-long classroom video-based project conducted at a Midwestern High School. The best examples of classroom practices and student activities were discussed. The most prominent observations of this project were that the video-based ESL activities contributed to the overall learning motivation and the enhancement of pronunciation skills. Finally, the authors discuss some potential issues and instructional implications of utilizing video technology in K-12 settings.

This study examined the impact of writing anxiety and computer anxiety on language learning for 45 ESL adult learners enrolled in an English grammar and writing course. Two sections of the course were offered in a traditional classroom setting whereas two others were given in a hybrid form that involved distance learning. Contrary to previous research, writing anxiety showed no correlation with learning performance, whereas computer anxiety only yielded a positive correlation with performance in the case of classroom learners. There were no significant differences across learning environments on any measures. These observations are discussed in light of the role computer technologies now play in our society as well as the merging of socio-demographic profiles between classroom and distance learners. Our data suggest that comparisons of profiles between classroom and distance learners may not be an issue worth investigating anymore in language studies, at least in developed countries.

Corpora provide teachers and materials developers with the ability to ensure that the instructions they use in class and in teaching materials correctly reflect natural use. This paper examines the ways in which grammar reference books and two types of EFL/ESL materials present the past perfect aspect and whether they do so accurately. It will be argued that there are several issues concerning how these books present the grammar point. Many of the books surveyed provide incomplete explanations of when and how the form is used and several contain usage guidelines that are not supported by available corpus data. The paper ends with several recommendations to improve how the form is presented to teachers and learners.

The problem discussed in this article is the result of a conference on research on the importance of cognitive linguistics for teaching / learning foreign languages. Despite the high methodological standards, the introduction of cognitive grammar in the classroom showed a "missing link" between concepts and reality. In the article, the author describes exercises that should help students discover the correlation between language and somatic experience. The workshop consists of two stages: (i) introduction to the concept of image patterns as conceptual structures of our organization of cognitive function; (II) sample analysis of patterns of image organizing the semantic structure of the chosen language expressions.

This study investigates whether Facebook would be an ‘effective and easy’ teaching tool in ESL classes in South Korean universities. Using a teacher’s diary, action research was conducted. The study indicated that Facebook is not different from other new teaching tools; the teacher must familiarize him/herself with the tool to use it confidently. Second, a student’s ‘lazy factor’ is quite problematic in the learning process. Lastly, action research and a teacher’s journal can increase teacher’s self-accountability.

Every year selected leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) speak to large audiences for regular devotional meetings at Brigham Young University, a private religious college in Provo, Utah. This study investigates the possibility that a rhetorical analysis of devotional speakers could be an effective way to observe typical language features in English public speaking that would be especially helpful for advanced English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students in improving their comprehension and expression skills. Using published transcripts and cassette tape recordings of these Latter-day Saint discourses, the analysis includes lexical, figurative, syntactic, schematic, tonal, and semantic aspects of each devotional speech. The results suggest that such religious discourses contain language details and rhetorical patterns in English that ESL students could learn to recognize, understand, and use persuasively.

Having command of formulaic language, one of the linguistic elements related to the culture, is critical for self-expression and understanding the interlocutor. Thus counselors who are ESL (English as a Second Language) learners might benefit from having skills in formulaic language for providing quality service to their clients. Audio-visual materials which mostly contain formulaic language forms and cultural aspects might be used to help counseling sessions be more helpful and effective. This multidisciplinary study aims at presenting a brief review of the literature about formulaic language and multicultural counseling and then discussing the possible effect of integrating TV shows into ESL classes in the connection between counselor and client. In conclusion we suggest that TV shows might be effective tools to boost figurative language skills and to encourage immersion of ESL learners into culture, which is interrelated with conceiving cultural aspects of communication. As an implication, we present possible approaches to curriculum design, multicultural counseling and teaching English for specific purposes.

W konkluzji, przedstawimy możliwe podejścia do tworzenia podstawy programowej, wielokulturowego doradztwa i nauczania języka angielskiego specjalistycznego.
