From bad through good to excellent Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) studies – presenting set of criteria to evaluate IPA papers and to provide high-quality future research

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is a recently developed qualitative approach, not only in psychology but also in pedagogy. It turns out that not all IPA studies meet the indicated criteria of acceptability developed by Jonathan A. Smith (2011). The aim of this article is to present a set of criteria to evaluate IPA papers and to provide high-quality future research. The article is divided into three parts: first, I am going to focus on indicating limitations of pedagogical research in which IPA was used, later I shall go on to give examples of good practice. In the last section, I have correlated particular stages of research with the criteria of validity to show what makes IPA study excellent. I also formulate two main requisites for making high-quality IPA study.

The article presents the theoretical framework of research determined by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (abbreviated IPA). This research method has been characterized as a method used in qualitative research strategies. The article focuses on the possibility of using IPA in research on crime. The Critical Race Theory (CRT) research program. CRT is a research and intellectual perspective in legal sciences using methods similar to the IPA model is also briefly discussed. The summary of the article contains examples of problems that can be investigated with IPA.

Artykuł referuje założenia stojące za ramą teoretyczną badań wyznaczaną przez interpretacyjną analizę fenomenologiczną (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, w skrócie IPA). W opracowaniu dokonano charakterystyki tej metody badawczej jako metody stosowanej w ramach strategii badań jakościowych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem możliwości zastosowania IPA w badaniach nad przestępczością. W warstwie egzemplifkacyjnej omówiono pokrótce program badawczy Critical Race Theory jako nurtu w prawoznawstwie stosującego metody zbliżone do modelu IPA.W podsumowaniu z kolei zawarto przykładowe problemy, które w szczególnym stopniu można badać w odwołaniu do IPA. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is a method of qualitative research focused on understanding how people give meaning to their life experiences. First described by Jonathan A. Smith in 1996, IPA is currently gaining popularity thanks to its application in clinical psychology, psychotherapy, or psycho-oncology. This article reviews the latest research based on IPA, detailing the topic, sources, authors, and number of participants. It also marks the growing number of publications using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The article shows possible application of IPA in psychological studies, and proves that this methodology allows for the collection of unique data, unobtainable in quantitative studies.

Interpretacyjna Analiza Fenomenologiczna (IPA) jest metodą badań jakościowych skupiającą się na zrozumieniu, w jaki sposób ludzie nadają sens swoim przeżyciom i doświadczeniom. Po raz pierwszy opisana przez Jonathana Smitha w 1996 r, obecnie znacznie zyskuje na popularności znajdując zastosowanie w psychologii klinicznej, psychoterapii czy psychoonkologii. W artykule dokonano przeglądu najnowszych badań opartych na IPA z wyszczególnieniem ich tematyki, źródeł, autorów i liczby uczestników. Pokazano także rosnącą z roku na rok liczbę publikacji wykorzystujących interpretacyjną analizę fenomenologiczną. Artykuł ukazuje możliwe zastosowania IPA w badaniach psychologicznych iudowadnia, że metodologia ta pozwala na zebranie unikatowych danych niemożliwych do pozyskania w klasycznych badaniach ilościowych.

The aim of this article is to critically analyze and evaluate scientific publication concerning the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), written by Jonathan A. Smith, Paul Flowers and Michael Larkin (2009), in the context of the potential of using the approach in pedagogy and also in andragogy. IPA is used more often by representatives of the humanities, social sciences, and health sciences, but so far no attempt was made to introduce this approach to pedagogy-andragogy in which hermeneuticphenomenological perspective has already been used.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba krytycznej analizy i oceny publikacji naukowej dotyczącej Interpretacyjnej analizy fenomenologicznej (ang. Interpretative phenomenological analysis – IPA), której autorami są: Jonathan A. Smith, Paul Flowers i Michael Larkin (2009), w kontekście możliwości wykorzystania tego podejścia w pedagogice, w tym także w andragogice. IPA coraz częściej wykorzystywana jest przez przedstawicieli nauk humanistycznych, społecznych czy nauk o zdrowiu, dotychczas jednak nie podjęto próby wprowadzenia tego podejścia do pedagogiki andragogiki, w której swoją tradycję ma już perspektywa hermeneutyczno-fenomenologiczna.
