Cross-Cultural Determinants of Job Satisfaction

100%
EN
The article investigates if the relative importance of determinants of job satisfaction is influenced by cultural differences. The research evidence provided by a multinational data sample from more than 40 countries and 376,670 respondents from 207 different corporations shows that these influences are mostly not statistically significant so they become practically irrelevant for management practitioners. The interpretation of the findings focuses on two widespread assumptions about the role of individual and cultural values in the job satisfaction formation.

The role played by the state in economy is one of the most important problems in economic science. With regard to this role and its importance, it is often forgotten that the state is largely influenced by the cultural values of its citizens. This paper evaluates the role of cultural values in explaining the differences in state tax revenues as percentage of GDP in cross-country perspective. Our results suggest that there is a statistically significant relationship between shared cultural values and taxation (measured by the revenues that are accumulated by the state). Therefore, it seems to be important to take culture into account when designing optimal economic policies and influencing the level of life and well-being.

This article takes up a theme addressed many years ago by Andrzej Bogusławski: a semantic and cultural comparison of the Polish and German terms of address “Pan” and “Herr.” Focussing on these two words, the paper seeks to demonstrate (as in a number of earlier studies, e.g. Wierzbicka 2015, Forthcoming) that despite their apparent insignificance, generic titles used daily across Europe can reveal complex and intricate webs of cultural assumptions and attitudes and provide keys to the inmost recesses of the speakers’ cultural and social world. At the same time, the paper argues that in order to use these keys effectively, we need some basic locksmith skills and it tries to show that the NSM approach to semantics and pragmatics can help us develop such skills. The explications posited here possess, it is argued, predictive and explanatory power which is beyond the reach of traditional analyses operating with technical labels such as “formal,” ”polite,” “respectful,” “egalitarian” and so on. The paper has implications for language teaching and cross-cultural communication and education in Europe and beyond.

Although the cultural values of the Igbo of South-East Nigeria are multiple and di-verse, research seems to have identified a seminal link between most of them to the much touted sense of communality. In communality, the sheer strength and vivacity of the Igbo spirit is magnificently showcased, and in it there is a concrete as-semblage of the Igbo mythology. In this paper the Igbo myths of the origin of mankind and death are explored to evaluate their rich meaning-contents, their significant influence on the religious-cultural, and, in consequence, the whole gamut of the traditional people’s worldview was duly x-rayed. In conclusion, observations were presented which indicate that even the contemporary Igbo pathways are not bereft of the daunting influences of ancient myths.

When African female writing commenced in 1966, it proffered a vista of female pro-testation of the individuality of woman. The clarion call for a revision and deconstruc-tion of patriarchal values became sonorous and distinct in the politics of gender. Various tools have been employed in this radical political act. Iconoclasm in the bid to destroy the emblems of patriarchy has served as a rude awakening to the dire need for a drastic change of cultural values. In the same vein, utopian devices have opened up a gateway to possibilities of a better world of the evaluation of integrity, probity and development hinged on creativity. There is also a reversal of the hegemonic mode of power where the power process is revaluated and deconstructed. This paper examines the varied thoughts of African female writers and theorists who seem to be entangled in a cultural bind immanent in a measure of ambivalence. It concludes that the female perennial quest for freedom may in point of fact be only chimerical.

Roztocze possesses considerable cultural assets, conducive to developing tourism. Among them all, the sacred ones are especially significant because they are traces and witnesses of the former multicultural and multireligious character of the region. They are also excellent premises for advancing religious tourism. But there are some barriers that confine opportunities to develop that kind of tourist movement in Roztocze. First of all, is the general weak state of the tourism infrastructure. Besides that, there is an evident lack of professional promotion and elaborated offering of products of religious tourism. It seems that this form of tourism is not emphasized strongly enough in regional and local development strategies.

Roztocze posiada niezwykle cenne walory kulturowe, sprzyjające rozwojowi turystyki.

Semiotic links exist among communication, culture, teaching, and learning and this has important implications for implementing culturally responsive teaching. The present paper provides some arguments in favour of creating culturally sensitive classrooms where students have an opportunity to acquire a broader cultural awareness which helps them to develop their intercultural communicative competence.

This article deals with how the Polish in Norway perceive and talk about motherhood ina migratory context. The changes such a context might imply in terms of a parenting style, defined as a set of attitudes that express the parents’ behavior towards the child, are the article’smain focus. The results presented are based on qualitative interviews conducted withtwelve Polish mothers in Norway. The empirical data shows that the mothers interviewedconsider the Polish parenting style as rather demanding and intrusive while the Norwegianparenting style is considered as rather responsive and neglecting. The article shows, however, that there is no absolute connection between rather stereotyped perceptions of the Norwegianand the Polish parenting styles, and the actual attitudes identified in the analysis of themothers’ narratives. Better economic opportunities are among the most important changesfor the mothers, which in turn influences their perceptions and practices of motherhood.Furthermore, the diversity in perceiving, talking about and performing motherhood acrossborders are stressed, highlighting that the changes in terms of parenting styles are to beseen, above all, in terms of structural opportunities and personal experiences.

Do niedawna dziedzictwo kulturowe pozostawało niekwestionowaną domeną badań nauk humanistycznych.

Until recently, research on cultural heritage seemed to be the unquestioned realm of the humanities. However, the development of the heritage market and the need to consider the benefits of its preservation and contemporary usage from many different viewpoints - not only artistic and historical, but also taking into account the perspective of creation and implementation of public policies and strategies, and the overall context of socio-economic development - calls for an active engagement of economics in its analysis as a specific product in the market. The author considers two very important issues with respect to theoretical approaches to cultural heritage seen from the perspective of cultural economics and its specific sub-field of heritage economics: the question of heritage values and public goods characteristics of many heritage products.

While compensation is a central component in the relationship between employees and employers, it is a relatively under-researched area within human resource management and industrial-organisational psychology. Instead, where much of the compensation research has occurred is within the disciplines of economics and finance, areas where agency theory dominates. This article explores the relationship between culture and compensation practices through the lens of organisational justice theory and contrasts the role of distributive justice with the more recent procedural and interactional justice theories. The article articulates how fairness perceptions are instrumental in determining which compensation practices fit different cultures. The consideration of individual perception is important as there is considerable variability within cultures and many organisations have to deal with increasingly multicultural workforces. A particular contribution of this paper is that it explicitly discusses justice perceptions as an explanatory variable of the relationship between culture and compensation practices, something that frequently has been omitted in prior scholarship. The article further explores the extent to which employee participation in compensation decisions may modify perceptions of fairness, and subsequently how this participation effect may be modified by culture.

The study indicates that Central and Eastern Europe reveals cultural and civilizational distinct as a borderline space. This borderland shaped largely by the division of Europe into Roman Catholic and Orthodox. In the space, cultural values and patterns overlap: Western Europe, Orthodox and some Oriental. Today, the space is often identified with the periphery of Western Europe. In this space, the specific, long-term culture face formed, which is inter alia a consequence of a favour attitude of Middle-Eastern Europe communities towards the immigrant population. It is followed by the revealed phenomena of ideological and political manipulation. It is noted that the cultural identity of this space is an integral part of Europe as a whole.

The article is centered on Hildebrand Gurlitt’s figure and his role in the Nazi’s trading in pieces of art. The documents of H. Gurlitt’s life history and his art activities have just recently been publicized and remain poorly researched. It was found that due to his purposefulness and strong friendly relations with artists, H. Gurlitt, who managed to collect one of the best art collections of the contemporary modernists and expressionists in Germany by the late 1920s, became a professional sought after by the Nazi authorities. Against the background of notorious German art historians, such as the special representatives of Hitler appointed to create the collection of the Fuehrer’s museum and planned museum in Linz Hans Posse and his successor from 1943 Hermann Voss, the chair of the Federal association of art and antiquities dealers in Germany Adolf Weinmueller, who actively participated in the persecution of Jewish art dealers, it was shown what was the personal contribution of H. Gurlitt and other “cultural officers” to the development of the Third Reich cultural component. Being the member of a special Ministry of propaganda working group of art dealers, H. Gurlitt established connections with branches of Western antique firms that worked in Germany and bought from them secretly the works of “degenerative art”. In his turn he bought the works from German collectors of Jewish descent; helped them, gave them money and a chance to emigrate from Germany. The Reich Treasury received millions of foreign exchange earnings from his activities. Revealing of Gurlitt and other art dealers activities complements the holistic picture that represents the National Socialism epoch. Gurlitt’s case was also analyzed as “the greatest discovery of the century”, when more than 1400 paintings were found in the ordinary rented apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt, who was the son of Hildebrand Gurlitt, in Munich in 2012. Emphasizing that the discovery stirred Germany and widely resonated around the globe, the author reveals the reasons for which the German Government held off disclosing the information about Gurlitt collection. It is stressed that allowing open access to the collection helped in finding owners and descendants, as well as identifying criminals and accomplices of the Nazi expansionist policy.

The study explores how participatory processes (in this case, participatory budgeting) impact people’s motivation for and the habit of active civic engagement in a society with high power distance and high uncertainty avoidance scores. The findings show that almost all respondents reported the acquisition of new skills and knowledge, as well as an increased expression of empowerment. The manifestations of empowerment varied from further community activism, to increased feeling of entitlement to monitor public authorities and hold them accountable.

Romero 2000; Sifianou 2001).

Linguists consider insults/swear words as interjections carrying an expressive, cathartic, function, through which the enunciator manifests emotions. We provide a contrastive study of insults/swear words, investigating whether there are specific morphological/syntactic structures pertaining to insults/swear words and discuss the cross-cultural similarities/differences in the pragmatic use of this kind of language, focusing on the perspective of politeness. To do so, we analyse examples drawn from Hergé’s TinTin and their translation into Greek and English, this comic being rich in insults /swear words due to the particularities of the genre of discourse and Captain Haddock’s expressive character. The question is whether the implicit pragmatic/cultural values are the same in all the texts or there are important differences, which can be traced, deriving from the particularities of each of the languages of study. It emerged that the Greek chosen utterances reflect all the parameters influencing the original: phonological, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic. The English version seems to be more distant on all levels of analysis. The (non)preservation of the parameters depends on the peculiarities of the Greek, French and English languages and on the collective images of the recipients. Our conclusions match previous researches, proving Greek as positive politeness oriented, opposed to English (see also Romero 2000; Sifianou 2001).

This study examined Chinese mothers’ views on children’s education in China and aimed to identify potential culturally specific perspectives and individual trends. Nine mothers from Beijing were asked to express, in the form of a narrative, their views on the stories that their children watched and read. The interviewees were also asked to assess the delivery, content, values, ideals and model behaviours that characterise Chinese and Western stories for children. The mothers also explained how the aspects of the stories that their children watch and read fit their own expectations and parenting strategies. The data gathered in the study allowed the Authors to create a list of Chinese and Western stories that Chinese children are in contact with, learn what values and model behaviours are expressed in those stories according to the children’s mothers, and how these mothers assess the values and model behaviours in the context of their own parental goals. Using exploratory factor analysis, the authors identified a number of categories that the Chinese mothers evoked. They discuss the cultural dimensions that characterise the Chinese mothers’ perspectives of Chinese and Western stories for children.

W artykule zostaje podjęta próba odkrycia kulturowo określonych i indywidualnych punktów widzenia dotyczących edukacji dzieci w Chinach.

Skok w dorosłość to osiąganie dojrzałości płciowej, fizycznej, psychicznej, prawnej i głównie społecznej. Najmniejsza różnica, w opiniach licealistów i studentów, wystąpiła w wartościach allocentrycznych, prospołecznych i kulturalnych.

This article deals with changing the hierarchy of the values of young people related to their adolescence. Jump into adulthood is achieving sexual, physical, mental, legal and primarily social maturity. Reassessment of the hierarchy of values of young people related to their maturation, in the jump into adulthood, was examined on the example of selected social groups of high school and college students. The comparative analysis was carried out on the basis of research of young people’s attitudes to values conducted among 647 high school students in 2006 and PWSZ students in Płock (137 students in 2016). The findings of the research conducted have shown that allocentric and pro-social values are invariably prioritized among the value hierarchies irrespective of the age of the respondents. Achieving maturity revaluates the hierarchy of the remaining values researched. With the attainment of social maturity, work and education values dominate over those of pleasure important for high school students. It is interesting to conduct detailed analyses of relations to individual values changing with the age of the respondents. There has been a marked increase in the approval of civic, educational, family, work-related, student-related power over the high school students while a drop in ratings has occurred for the pleasurable and material values. The smallest difference, in the opinions of high school and college students, was in terms of allocentric, pro-social and cultural values. Factors determining the distribution of responses were: the age of the respondents, the stage of maturity while in the case of high school students it was additionally the profile of their class.
