Responsibility as the Result of Life Experience through the Adult Learners’ Eyes

The meaning of responsibility, especially in young adults, plays an important role in contemporary life. It has an impact on the family life, social relations, ways of a work performance and many other aspects. The problem of taking responsibility by present-day people is discussed on different levels and in different areas. The point of view of adult learners of the formal education system still remains overlooked in academic discourse. This article presents adult learners’ understanding of the concept of adulthood and its important component, responsibility. The present study examined opinions of learners attending upper secondary school for adults, using the phenomenography method. In anonymous survey with open-ended questions, 94 voluntary participants (aged 18–63) took part. This qualitative study examined how adult learners begin to recognize the importance of a sense of responsibility for themselves and how it influences their life. The results of the study indicate the traditional understanding of the concept of adulthood by adult learners. Personal development, as a result of a variety of life experiences, makes increase of the importance of responsibility for themselves, their family and surrounding. Though different life difficulties, awkwardness, lack of autonomy, the value of responsibility becomes more significant.

The main object of the article is the meaning of crisis in the human life. It is focused on developmental and normative insight in the crisis experience. The considerations on the development potential of the crisis include analysis of symptoms, factors, reasons, stages and ways to deal with and to overcome the crisis. The arguments presented in the article indicate value of care about reflection on deep humanistic and existential dimension of our human experience.

Tekst wpisuje się w aktualny dyskurs dotyczący roli „miejsca pamięci” we współczesnym świecie. Dotyczy pamięci miejsca, pamięci o miejscu i jego znaczeniu. Pamięć miejsca jest pamięcią ucieleśnioną, charakterystyczną dla osób mieszkających w danym miejscu i doświadczającego go indywidualnie, emocjonalnie, „od wewnątrz”. To zwykle „pamięć serca” – przetworzony przez sentymenty świat wyobraźni ocen, emocji. Celem rozważań jest próba poznania związku pamięci miejsca z jego rolą w życiowych meandrach. To także poszukiwanie związku miejsca i jego znaczenia w doświadczeniach życiowych filozofa-pedagoga. Jest to opowieść, w której czytelnik odnajduje powiązania miejsca, czasu, zdarzeń i wydarzeń życiowych, postaw, więzi; zastanawiamy się, jak doświadczenia i wspomnienia łączą się z konkretnymi miejscami, czy i jakie mają znaczenie w kształtowaniu własnego losu, i wreszcie – jak pamięć rodziny, domu, miejsca pracy prowadzi przez życie Autora wspomnień.

The text corresponds to the current discourse concerning the role of “the place of memory” in the contemporary world. This refers to the memory of a location – memory about a location and about its meaning. The memory of a location is embodied memory, typical of people who live in a certain place and experience it individually, emotionally, “from the inside”. The memory of a location is usually the “memory of the heart”, meaning the world of imagination, evaluations and emotions transformed by sentiments. The text is an attempt to recognise the association between a location and its role in the meanders of life. It is also a search for the association between a location and its meaning in the life experiences of a philosopher and pedagogue. It includes a story in which the reader can find some connections between a location, a time, events and life experiences, as well as bonds and attitudes. On the basis of the story of Professor Tadeusz Pilch, we try to find out how experiences and memories relate to particular places. Are they important for the formation of one’s own life story and what is that importance? And finally, how does the memory of family, home and workplace guide the Author of the memoirs through his course of life?

The article presents the autobiographical memories of Professor Józef Kargul – an outstanding teacher, researcher on adult education, academic teacher, for years associated with the University of Wroclaw, University of Zielona Gora and University of Lower Silesia, co-founder and scientific director of the Summer School for Young Researchers on Adult Education and Counsellors and the series “Adult Education Discourses”, functioning today as a scientific journal. Professor Kargul flashbacks to his childhood and youth, talks about his educational and scientific career, important life experiences, key events and important people that have had an impact on his life. He also shares some reflections on the condition of modern science, as well as what he believes is most important in life.

Artykuł przedstawia wspomnienia autobiograficzne Profesora Józefa Kargula – wybitnego pedagoga, andragoga, nauczyciela akademickiego, związanego przez lata z Uniwersytetem Wrocławskim, Uniwersytetem Zielonogórskim i Dolnośląską Szkołą Wyższą, współtwórcy i kierownika naukowego Letniej Szkoły Andragogów i Poradoznawców oraz serii wydawniczej „Dyskursy Młodych Andragogów”, funkcjonującej dzisiaj jako czasopismo naukowe. Profesor we wspomnieniach wraca do dzieciństwa i młodości, opowiada o swojej drodze edukacyjnej i naukowej, ważnych doświadczeniach życiowych, kluczowych wydarzeniach i osobach znaczących, które wywarły wpływ na Jego życie. The considerations included in the article focus on self-narration that serves life reconstruction in time perspective. Showing the essence and importance of self-narration in the life of a contemporary man directs further thinking to the proposal of reading the author’s narrative technique called as “discovering oneself again”. The article is an attempt of looking closer at the temporary life history course through self-narration about oneself entangled in daily life.

Aim: The article has a review type. The analysis included in this study concerns the experiences of parents raising children with disabilities. Its purpose is to identify the characteristic aspects of adapting mothers and fathers to live with a handicapped child, which are different from traditional indicators. Methods: A systematic review of Polish and foreign literature describing the issues of parental experience in the situation of a child’s disability was carried out. Results: The study shows the dynamics and complexity of parenting, highlighted in the course of life. The article shows tendencies indicating positive changes occurring in the personal and social functioning of parents, but also confirming the presence of negative aspects. Conclusions: The paper presents the utility of applying the concept of transformation in explaining the essence of these complex experiences

Cel: Opracowanie ma charakter przeglądowy. Podjęta w nim analiza dotyczy doświadczeń rodziców wychowujących dzieci z niepełnosprawnością. Jej celem jest wyłonienie charakterystycznych aspektów przystosowywania się matek i ojców do życia z dzieckiem niepełnosprawnym, wykraczających poza tradycyjne wskaźniki. Metody: Przeprowadzono systematyczny przegląd literatury polskiej i obcej, opisującej zagadnienia rodzicielskich doświadczeń w sytuacji niepełnosprawności dziecka. Wyniki: W opracowaniu pokazano dynamikę i złożoność rodzicielstwa, zaznaczającą się w przebiegu życia. Zobrazowano tendencje wskazujące na zmiany pozytywne, zachodzące w osobistym i społecznym funkcjonowaniu rodziców, ale również potwierdzające obecność aspektów negatywnych. Wnioski: W artykule pokazano użyteczność zastosowania koncepcji transformacji w wyjaśnianiu istoty złożonych doświadczeń rodziców.
