Imaging the events of the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity (based on the anthology Mystets’kyĭ Barbakan: Trykutnyk 92: Antolohiia)The source of the analysed material is the anthology Mystets’kyĭ Barbakan, only 300 copies of which have been printed. It is a collection of works of literature, journalism, and art from the period of the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity (the so-called Maĭdan) of 2013–2014. We focus on the works of art containing both words and images and we combine approaches from language and cultural studies: the imaging devices used in these selected works have been analyzed using the tools of poetics of literature and media, as well as linguistic methodology. Środki obrazowania wydarzeń rewolucji godności na Ukrainie (na podstawie publikacji Мистецький Барбакан: Трикутник 92: Антологія)Źródłem materiału do badania jest antologia Mystećkyj Barbakan, która ukazała się nakładem zaledwie 300 egz. Jest zbiorem tekstów literackich i publicystycznych, a także dzieł artystycznych z okresu rewolucji godności (tzw. Majdanu) na Ukrainie w latach 2013–2014. Analiza wybranych utworów artystycznych zawierających dwa składniki – słowo i obraz – została dokonana w oparciu o podejście lingwistyczno-kulturoznawcze: sposób obrazowania w wybranych pracach przeanalizowany został za pomocą narzędzi poetyki literatury i mediów, a także metodologii badań językoznawczych.

Artykuł jest poświęcony nieanalizowanym dotychczas wypowiedziom Henryka Sienkiewicza na temat jego twórczości własnej. Bogaty materiał leksykalny zebrany z całości korespondencji prywatnej pisarza, na który złożyły się pojedyncze wyrazy, połączenia wyrazowe o różnym charakterze (ciągłe i nieciągłe), heterogeniczne pod względem znaczeniowym (dosłowne i metaforyczne) oraz strukturalnym (wyrażenia, zwroty, frazy). Przegląd ponad 400 jednostek udowodnił, że Sienkiewicz w nasycony ekspresją sposób podchodził do omawianych w listach spraw związanych z własną pracą twórczą i chętnie dzielił się spostrzeżeniami i uczuciami na ten temat z wszystkimi członkami rodziny. Pod względem językowo-stylistycznym zebrane passusy składają się głównie z leksyki potocznej, nacechowanej ekspresywnie, wspólnoodmianowej oraz wyrażeń metaforycznych.

The article is devoted to Henryk Sienkiewicz’s statements about his own work, which have not been analyzed so far. Rich lexical material collected from the entire private correspondence of the writer, which consisted of single words, word combinations of various nature (continuous and discontinuous), heterogeneous in terms of meaning (literal and metaphorical) and structure (expressions, turns of phrases, phrases). A review of over 400 units proved that Sienkiewicz approached the issues discussed in the letters – related to his own creative work – in expressive manner. He also shared willingly his observations and feelings on these issues with all family members. In terms of language and style, the collected passages consist mainly of colloquial, expressive, and metaphorical expressions.

Die Sprache gehört zu den imposantesten Werkzeugen in der Arbeit eines Politikers. Die präzise Verwendung einer Sprache und Kenntnis der Rhetorik-Grundsätze sind notwendig, um ein ausgefeiltes Image zu kreieren, eine politische Unterstützung zu gewinnen und an die Macht zu kommen. Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, die politische Sprache zu analysieren, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf Sprachstrukturen, die der Manipulation und Erreichung politischer Vorteile dienen. Ein Ausgangspunkt für die Überlegungen sind parlamentarische Auftritte des niederländischen Politikers Geert Wilders.

Language is one of the main tools politicians use in their work. An accurate language use and following the principles of rhetoric are crucial in creating a nuanced public image, gaining followers and obtaining power. The aim of this article is to examine the characteristics of the language of politics mainly in relation to linguistic structures used to manipulate and maximize political gain. A starting point for the discussion is formed by parliamentary speeches of a Dutch politician and the leader of populist party PVV, Geert Wilders.

The article deals with the journalistic texts of Svyatomyr Fostun, published in the London military journal “Surmach” (Trumpeter). It analyzes the specifics of the grammatical and stylistic design of these texts. It was found that the author’s journalism reflects the phonetic, orthographic, lexical, and morphological features codified in the Ukrainian spelling of 1929. The journalist’s creative self-expression in the analyzed journalistic texts includes tropes and stylistic figures, which expand the semantic framework of the text, and reveal its essential features. The conclusion is that the author uses stylistic devices in journalistic language for emotional and expressive reinforcement, axiological characteristics (positive and negative evaluation), communicative and pragmatic guidelines. Intertextual elements contribute to the structural and semantic integrity of the publicist’s texts, and coordinate the addressee’s perception and interpretation of the message in the right direction.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę tekstów publicystycznych Swiatomyra Fostuna, publikowanych w londyńskim czasopiśmie wojskowym „Surmacz”. W szczególności zbadano specyfikę ich konstrukcji gramatycznej i stylistycznej. Stwierdzono, że publicystyka autora odzwierciedla cechy fonetyczne, ortograficzne, leksykalne i morfologiczne, skodyfikowane w pisowni ukraińskiej w 1929 roku. Przedstawicielami twórczej autoekspresji dziennikarza w analizowanych tekstach publicystycznych są tropy i figury stylistyczne, które stanowią poszerzenie ram znaczeniowych wiadomości, ujawniają jej głębokie, istotne cechy. Stwierdzono, że autor posługuje się środkami stylistycznymi w języku publicystycznym dla wzmocnienia emocjonalnego i ekspresyjnego, cech aksjologicznych (oceny pozytywnej i negatywnej), wskazówek komunikacyjnych i pragmatycznych. Elementy intertekstualne przyczyniają się do strukturalnej i semantycznej całości tekstów publicysty, koordynują percepcję i interpretację wiadomości przez adresata we właściwym kierunku.

Дана стаття розглядає роль і місце стилістичних засобів у художньому творі в контексті літературної прагматики. Опираючись на рівень «автор – твір - читач», літературна прагматика пропонує трактування тексту із урахуванням прихованої інформації. Метою даної розвідки є стилістичний аналіз діалогічного мовлення персонажів роману Річарда Олдінгтона «Death of a Hero» та визначення прагматичних функцій зазначених стилістичних засобів як носіїв імпліцитної інформації. Окрім прямих авторських описів, Річарда Олдінгтон характеризує своїх персонажів через їхнє мовлення. Стилістичні фігури у діалогах допомагають оцінити ситуацію та зрозуміти спосіб мислення і характери головних героїв. Фонетичні та графічні стилістичні засоби найчастіше вказують на соціальне походження мовця, іноді на його емоційний стан та особливості мовлення. Синтаксичні стилістичні засоби у діалогах досить часто зустрічаються у вигляді обірваних речень, що не стільки додає естетичної краси чи розуміння ідей, скільки дозволяє авторові героя правдоподібнішим, змусити читача перейнятися його проблемами. Синтаксичні стилістичні засоби у діалогах розглянутого роману націлюють читача на можливість самостійно завершити думку героя, зрозумівши хід його думок. Найчастіше в діалогах роману Річард Олдінгтон використовує лексичні стилістичні засоби, які не лише збагачують мову того чи іншого персонажа, але й дозволяють судити про широту його кругозору, глибину знань, ерудицію, образність мислення, належність до того чи іншого прошарку суспільства, вікової групи, епохи. Саме завдяки тропам авторові імпліцитно вдається пояснити, що між головним героєм та його оточенням завжди існувала прірва непорозуміння, незалежно від середовища в якому він знаходився. Особливу прагматичну функцію виконує контраст вживання тропів у мовленні головного героя до того як він став солдатом і після, демонструючи фундаментальність змін, які відбулися у його свідомості. Однією з найважливіших прагматичних функцій вживання стилістичних фігур у діалогах є надання читачам можливості отримати додаткову інформацію про покоління, яке описує Річард Олдінгтон, принципи його світогляду та систему цінностей.

This article deals the role and place of stylistic devices in a work of art in the literary pragmatics context. Operating on the level «author – work – reader», literary pragmatics offers an interpretation of the text together in the light of hidden information. The paper focuses on the stylistic analysis of the dialogues of the characters in Richard Aldington’s novel “Death of a Hero” and defining the pragmatic functions of the given stylistic devices as source of implicit information. In addition to direct descriptions, Richard Aldington characterizes his characters through their speech. Stylistic figures in the dialogues help to assess the situation and understand the way of thinking of characters and their personal features. Phonetic and graphic stylistic devices often indicate the social background of the speaker, his emotional state and situations in which dialogues take palce. Syntactic stylistic means in dialogues are usually broken sentences, they do not add much aesthetic beauty or understanding of ideas, but they allow the author to make characters more believable so that readers feel for them. Syntactic stylistic devices in the dialogues of the novel provide readers with an opportunity to complete the thought of the character, to understand the course of their thoughts. The most frequently used stylistic devices in the dialogues of the novel Richard Aldington are of a lexical stratum; they not only enrich the language of a character, but also allow to evaluate their intelligence, depth of knowledge, imagination level, social background, age group, era. It is thanks to the stylistic devices that the author implicitly manages to explain that there has always been an abyss of misunderstanding between the protagonist and his surrounding, regardless of where he was at a certain stage of life. The contrast of the use of tropes in the speech of the protagonist before and after he became a soldier, demonstrating the fundamental changes in his outlook, shows a particularly important pragmatic function of the stylistic devices usage.
