This article is a review of a monograph on genological research on speech species. The objects of this publication are tomb inscriptions from over 60 necropolises in the north-eastern Lublin Region, which is situated within the borders of the Orthodox Lublin-Chelm Diocese and in the western part of the Volyn oblast in Ukraine. These are ethnically, linguistically, culturally and religiously non-homogeneous areas. The analysis takes into consideration the structure, the type of the functions fulfilled by grave inscriptions, the pragmatic aspect and cultural specificity of the analyzed texts. The subject of the review is to discuss the content of the publication and to implement the research goals undertaken by the author. In assessing the scientific value of the monograph, the current methodological solutions and the role of the study in the context of the state of research in Polish text linguistics were taken into account. The reviewed monograph is a reliable empirical study, however, the adopted description model does not take into account semiotic features that would complete the information about the analyzed texts. The book may be a contribution to Slavonic dialectological studies, especially to the indication of mutual Polish-Ukrainian interferences. It constitutes a source for studying the vocabulary of the borderland. The work may be used for comparative studies of funeral texts.

The work presents the book Antroponimia pogranicza polsko-wschodniosłowiańskiego w świetle inskrypcji nagrobnych (Eng. Anthroponymy of the Polish-East Slavonic borderland in light of tombstone inscriptions) by Feliks Czyżewski. The author, a well-known researcher of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, collected, classified, elaborated and presented in the form of a dictionary about three thousand anthroponyms from working and closed cemeteries of Eastern Lublin region. It was preceded by a historical description of the region. The author also presented the current and historical state of the cemeteries (Orthodox, Catholic and mixed). Valuable parts of the book are color photographs illustrating various types of inscriptions, as well as maps presenting most important phonetic phenomena in Polish and the Ukrainian dialects, maps with location of the cemeteries where the inscriptions were collected, and bibliography concerning tombstone inscriptions in the Polish-East-Slavonic borderland.

Recenzja prezentuje książkę Feliksa Czyżewskiego Antroponimia pogranicza polsko-wschodniosłowiańskiego w świetle inskrypcji nagrobnych. Autor, znany badacz pogranicza polsko-ukraińskiego, zebrał, sklasyfikował i opracował oraz przedstawił w formie słownika ok. 3 tysięcy antroponimów z czynnych i zamkniętych cmentarzy Lubelszczyzny wschodniej. Całość poprzedził opisem historycznym regionu, przedstawił stan współczesny i historyczny cmentarzy wyznaniowych (prawosławnych, katolickich i mieszanych). Cennymi fragmentami książki są: kolorowe fotografie ilustrujące różne rodzaje inskrypcji, mapy przedstawiające ważniejsze zjawiska fonetyczne w gwarach polskich i ukraińskich, mapy z rozmieszczeniem miejscowości i cmentarzy, na których zebrano napisy, oraz bibliografia dotycząca inskrypcji nagrobnych na pograniczu polsko-wschodniosłowiańskim.

The subject of this article are local names in tombstone inscriptions that have survived in the rural Catholic cemeteries of historical Podolia. The aim is to analyze tchem through the prism of the classification proposed by Kazimierz Długosz. Tombstone inscriptions, treated as “texts of culture”, show the social relations of the former Podolia as a border area, identity issues, as well as cultural and economic changes.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są nazwy miejscowe w inskrypcjach nagrobnych, które zachowały się na wiejskich cmentarzach katolickich historycznego Podola. Celem jest ich analiza przez pryzmat klasyfikacji zaproponowanej przez Kazimierza Długosza. Inskrypcje nagrobne, traktowane jako „teksty kultury”, ukazują relacje społeczne dawnego Podola jako terenu pogranicza, kwestie tożsamościowe, a także przemiany kulturowe i gospodarcze.

Językowy obraz wojny w inskrypcjach nagrobnych i pieśniach ludowych

Zadaniem artykułu jest próba uchwycenia leksykalnych, semantycznych, kulturowych różnic i podobieństw inskrypcji nagrobnych oraz epickich pieśni ludowych, opisujących autentyczne wydarzenia z lat wojny i okupacji. Materiał źródłowy stanowią napisy nagrobne wybrane ze zbioru ponad 10000 inskrypcji nagrobnych pochodzących z Pomorza Zachodniego oraz pieśni wojenne z Kielecczyzny. W tekstach inskrypcji nagrobnych językowy obraz wojny jest prosty, wręcz ubogi, bo taka jest specyfika tego rodzaju tekstów. Dominuje funkcja informacyjna. W pieśniach obraz ten też jest prosty, ale o bardzo wysokiej emocjonalności, charakteryzujący się jednoznacznością ferowanych ocen, o bogatym słownictwie i frazeologii, o ostrej stylistyce i dosadnych sformułowaniach. Oba te typy tekstów naznaczonych wojną adresowane są do przyszłych pokoleń, dla utrwalenia ważnych wydarzeń i postaci zwykłych ludzi godnych najwyższego szacunku. Utrwalają pamięć o zmarłych ludziach i przekazują etos rodzinny, środowiskowy i narodowy.

The paper aims at capturing the lexical, semantic and cultural similarities and differences between the presentations of World War II events in tombstone inscriptions and folk epic songs. The study is based on a collection of over 10,()()() tombstone inscriptions of Pomorze Zachodnie (the Polish part of Pomerania) and a collection of war songs of the Kielce region (south-central Poland). The linguistic picture of war in tombstone inscriptions is rather simple and narrow, such is the specificity of those texts. The informative function reigns supreme. In war songs, the picture, although simple as well, is emotionally heavily charged. It is characterized by univocality of judgment, rich vocabulary and phraseology, sharp style and poignant expressions. Both types of text are addressed to future generations in order to commemorate important events and ordinary people worthy of the highest respect. They preserve memories about people and pass down the family, local and national ethos to prosperity.
