Celem niniejszego artykułu jest wskazanie relacji zachodzących między terminami kultura i cywilizacja oraz wskazanie czy owe terminy determinują zaistnienie cywilizacji uniwersalnej. Jednoznaczna odpowiedź na te pytania nie jest prosta, gdyż w toku przeprowadzonych rozważań wyłaniają się przynajmniej trzy twierdzenia. Pierwsze świadczy o tym, że oba terminy się wzajemnie uzupełniają (tradycja francuska – Fukuyama, Braudel), Drugie nawiązuje do definicji wynikającej z tradycji myśli niemieckiej (Kant, Webber), która oddziela te dwa terminy wskazując, że kultura jest czymś innym, niż cywilizacja. Trzecia odpowiedź dotyczy istnienie lub też wyłaniania się w XXI wieku cywilizacji uniwersalnej mającą swe podstawy w globalizacji opartej o rozwój środowiska informacyjnego, dystrybucji wiedzy oraz ewolucji technologicznej (Toffler).

The aim of the article is to present the relations between the notions of culture and civilization and show if these terms determine the existence of a universal civilization. An explicit answer to these question is not easy as at least three theorems emerge in the course of considerations. The first theorem states that both terms mutually complement each other (French tradition – Fukuyama, Braudel). The second one refers to the definition resulting from the tradition of German thought (Kant, Webber), which separated these two terms proving that culture is something completely different from civilization. The third answer refers to the existence or emergence in the 21st century of a universal civilization that has its foundation in globalization based on the development of IT environment, knowledge distribution and technological evolution (Toffler).
